Oooh Yeaaah, they weren't too quick the last few times I've been there.

I was chatting with one of the TSA blokes, talking about Australia, then Australian things, which lead to Vegemite. It had just been made illegal to bring it into the US due to some regulation involving folate. I told the TSA guy this. He said "Really, I didn't know".

Sony loses $2 billion USD last quarter.

Basically, all of their divisions other than Sony Pictures is bleeding money and they posted a $2 billion loss in the quarter where everybody typically makes a profit.

They've now posted that they expect a $2.9 billion loss for the current financial year, which will mean four straight years of loss at a total of $8 billion USD.

So unless they do something major and start earning some major profits, they're ******.

I guess their strategy of being a more expensive, 'premium' brand isn't working out for them, especially when you can get better quality or comparable products at prices lower than what they want.

Consumers need Sony for competition. It's companies like Sony that push the technology envelope, otherwise we'll still be sitting watching Sound of Music on are CRTs.

Last I checked, their life insurance business was doing pretty well for itself, too.

Maybe Kaz will shutter all the unprofitable bits like TVs and game consoles and focus the company on those two things. icon_razz.gif

Seriously though, unless he can overcome what's supposedly a ridiculously conservative board and Sony's deeply entrenched Not Invented Here syndrome (even Microsoft and Intel don't suffer NIH syndrome as badly as Sony do), then they are pretty much doomed.

Kind of makes you wonder what the real reasons behind the "10 year lifecycle" plan for the PS3 is ("10 year lifecycle... because we can't afford R&D on a new system until then").

Most of that would be from PS3 consoles.

On a related note, Sony banks should be opening over here within the next year or so.

I wouldn't go that far. They've been taking some losses, but you have to remember that they're a huge company. They still have a heap of operating income, and some divisions are turning a good profit. Of course, they can't keep taking losses forever, but at least they have time to turn things around.

Aye, I know that one well. I went out with a girl from middleton for a while and I think that was the closest store to her place.

Yeah I think it is. The store itself is alright. Ashton Moss leaves a lot to be desired but I do miss living in England itself.

Yeah, it was a fairly depressing place. The wife's company recently merged with an English firm and there's a chance we may go back for a few years soon. I do get home sick once in a while but I know it's rose tinting and it's not a country I'd want to fully raise my kids in, but it would be nice to go back for a few years.

There are parts I love about England and parts I don't like.. My boyfriend is English so he likes it more than I do but I could live there easily.. As long as we were well off. It's not a very forgiving country is you're scraping by.
Though I would love to live there in a couple of decades for good icon_smile.gif

Keep in mind they've been losing huge sums of money for the better part of a decade now. Even big companies eventually run out if they do that.

Kinda surprised to see an article like that up on Forbes. Usually they're aimed at big business types, none of this internet counter-culture we're all immersed in. I would totally be into "Movie Steam" btw.

For example: Kodak recently filed for Chapter 11.

Financial troubles like that make it seem less likely we'll see a Playstation 4 from them any time soon, what with the losses the PS3 made.

EDIT: inb4 it's making a profit now. How long did that take?

Well, having worked on PS3s, I hope they do. Last time game companies had to rearchitect their code just to get on the latest and greatest machines, it caused a few closures. With everyone shifting/shifted over to task-based engines rather than a traditional multithreading environment, another significant change to hardware architectures is going to result in a lot of useless code.

(I see task-based paradigms as a very interesting way forward anyway - an engine designed to perform discreet tasks paves way for distributed computing.)

If the machine shipped with 4 cells like it originally claimed, there probably wouldn't be a need to upgrade anything but the GPU for a couple of years.

I did a bit of a Google poke-a-round to see what IBM's plans for the chip are. Looks like they want to integrate it in to their Power-PC line. Makes sense - the Cell is basically a PowerPC with those SPUs added on. The X360 runs on a modified PowerPC design, and the Wii on a normal PowerPC design, so convergence there would be most fantastic IMO. It'd certainly save quite a few dollars for multiplatform development.

Wii U is running on another PowerPC, but I'm fairly confident the PS4 will be using a four core AMD chip.

Why? Got a source on that?

Personally I think a few of these POWER7 chips in future consoles would be pretty awesome. 4 threads per core, up to 8 cores per chip, up to 4 chips in a module icon_wink.gif

I remember hearing something about the WiiU being powered by the same technology as this AI called Watson, and he ran on Power7 cores.

Yeah, I dunno. I don't see any console manufacturer jumping to (or back to) an X86 architecture any time soon. Even the 64 bit varieties.

Of course, if we're talking about GPUs and GPGPU programming, then we'd be in business. It seems likely that all next-gen systems will use ATI graphics chipsets.

WiiU specs confirmed?

WiiU is made up of a cluster of ninety IBM Power 750 servers (plus additional I/O, network and cluster controller nodes in 10 racks) with a total of 2880 POWER7 processor cores and 16 Terabytes of RAM. Each Power 750 server uses a 3.5 GHz POWER7 eight core processor, with four threads per core. The POWER7 processor's massively parallel processing capability is an ideal match for WiiU's emarrassingly parallel sports-waggle games.

icon_lol.gif

You're right though, it'll be some custom, cut down POWER7 type of core. Just like all the current console have some sort of POWER5 or 6 core in there somewhere.

The same -tech-, you sausage. : P

Although thinking about it, perhaps in 40 years when whatever supersedes transistors matures a bit, we might actually get performance like that. And that would be amazing.
