That's exactly what I did. It's a win on all fronts
I guess the consultant guy I talked to was just nice enough to waive it for me regardless. _________________

| Me on Facebook/Google+ about Game Jam wrote: | Techie rant follows.
For the Global Game Jam, I figured we could hit the Kiloplayer diversifier.
Getting 1024 networked players in a real time action game is fucking nuts. Based on the game concept, I figured that we could go for it. A couple of hours later, I realised how much of a challenge it would be. Unity's networking code would simply be inappropriate for that many players, thanks to the amount of data. If I was to write an authorative server model, the bandwidth required to update 1024 players with what the other 1023 players were doing would far exceed the bandwidth of a gigabit network (125 megabytes per second). My initial packet design of 20-odd bytes per client actually required double the bandwidth - and that was without taking packet headers and missed packets in to account.
What I ended up doing was deciding that each client needed to run its own copy of the simulation. As such, each client would only need to know the important information - when someone else bursts - to keep the simulation synchronised. And to aid in synchronisation, I used blocking sockets so that no simulation would progress until all client data was sent to the server, and then all server data was sent back to the client.
With that in mind, I was able to compress each client update inside of an update packet to six bytes - two bytes for an ID, and four for stuff relating to the client burst. Abused C#'s get and set accessors to make life simpler there - all calculations are done in 3D and with full precision, but when you assign your final values to the client it uses set to convert it to the native network format (bytes), and get to convert it back to Vectors/ints/etc.
The simulation was also locked off to 8 frames per second. If you've played it, you'll notice the visuals run at a smooth 60. Something I've been going on about for years is that you should get away from a variable time delta and use a fixed one for the sake of your simulation. Visuals are updated at 60 frames, and I also handle input at 60 frames per second. Game feels reasonably responsive and looks smooth as a result. It would have been better had I updated the simulation at 10 or 12 frames per second. At 8 frames per second, the worst case scenario is that the game will transmit 48 megabytes of data per second. Could have logically upped it to 10 frames per second and still had plenty of space for packet headers, but I'd already committed to 8 and other aspects of the simulation coded were around that (such as the sequencer, which used 16 bar samples exported in the correct BPM).
Everything was working fine when I tested it (although the blocking sockets result in some clients stuttering, but hey, from-scratch code, no time to do something more robust). And somewhere in the three-to-five hours of getting it working and wrapping up, it got a desynchronisation bug.
So freaking annoyed. |
I poked around my code. Network communications wasn't the problem. It turns out I'd put something in an if-else statement that I shouldn't have. And suddenly everything worked fine.
Combination of feeling stupid and joy. All I needed was to hit delete on a couple of lines and we would have had a solid Game Jam entry. Le freakin' sigh. _________________

I got 95% for the stats assignment I submitted last week! Super duper happy about the grade because a) its an awesome mark and b) I was sick and in hospital while working on it so I was expecting a MUCH lower grade.

It makes me smile/chuckle but also feel sorry for people when I see them with stock standard iPod/iPhone headphones.

Nope! You might - but I know it's spoken voice, discussion podcasts. Although occasionally it might just be noise to drown out the rowdy people _________________

Teach me stats! I need to convince uni to let me do a real stats subject this year but I don't have the prerequisite. Or the prerequisite's prerequisite! _________________

70% of stats are all made up.
End lesson.
Seriously though, if a stats subject is a part of your degree that you are studying, then the uni should allow you to do it, even if it is a prerequisite. As long as you're still paying the money for the course, it shouldn't be a problem.
A couple of people have complained about it here in the past, but I failed a couple of 2nd year subjects at uni which were pre-requisites for the third and fourth years, but I was able to enrol in those courses and complete them anyway. If you don't want to be falling too far behind you need to press on and keep doing the rest of the course rather than waiting to be retaught your failed subject.
I guess all I'm trying to say is that if you tried the prerequisite and failed, the uni's should still be allowing you to do the next set of subjects regardless. Otherwise it will all stack up and you'll end up spending an extra 2 years there, when in the end all you do is repeat all your failed subjects in a single semester right at the end of your course.

I'm starting a masters and they require you to do some shitty "professional skills" subjects, a couple of which are basic stats. I didn't do any stats in undergrad but I do have a maths degree so I'm hoping to get them to let me do a third year stats subject instead. Way more interesting. _________________

I'm doing a Masters too. I have a Bachelor of Education and am currently doing my Masters in Professional Accounting. This is my first stats subject since high school. I'm finding it really quite easy to grasp, but it is a heavy workload. Lots of formulas and such to remember. _________________

I have bachelor degrees in maths and software engineering and started a masters by research, then quit it. This is a "research training" masters in computer science which has both coursework and research components, hopefully it works out better than the last one! But the professional skills stuff really is bulls***, sure it'll be a bludge but I kind of don't want to pay to learn, well, not much at all XD First things first, gotta tackle my department to let me take the real stats subject THEN convince maths to let me do it without the prereqs >_< _________________

Dad (he's a store manager at OPSM) was just telling me that an Arabian guy came into one of the Melbourne city stores and bought a pair of sunglasses worth $18,000! He paid in cash.
