So, some friends of mine got one of those Nespresso machines a while back. She's a pretty great barista, and he appreciates good coffee, so I did what any rational person would and politely asked them if they had lost their fucking minds.

I mean, anything associated with Nescafe would have to be dreadful right?

Well, actually...

After some heavy protesting (and a night of heavy drinking, they know I can't resist coffee when hungover) I tried it and... it actually makes a pretty good coffee! I mean, at the price they go for I wouldn't pick one up in a hurry, but for anyone that has the funds to afford it and is in the market for a machine that'll make you a good coffee, quickly, with minimal fuss... I can't believe that i'm saying this but, you could do a hell of a lot worse.

We use one of those little Italian jobbies (forget the proper name) pictured above, just remembered that and thought that others might be interested. I'd forgive you for calling bullshit though, I certainly would were the places reversed =)

My daily coffee of choice for the past decade is Long Mac, no sugar.

If i go to a new place, i often do get asked how i like (which is nice).. 3/4 of a small cup full is what i usually say.. (when i really wanna say 1/12th milk froth, but i have some dignity and don't wanna look like a douche)

99% of the time when they ask and do it the 3/4 full way my drink is very enjoyable.

Dimattina is my favourite while LaVazza tastes like salt water to me.

After dinner coffees.. i love lebanese coffees. 85% of my mates are lebanese, and when i come over for a social/bbq/eating event and the mums start pouring it out from a very long handle, its tops. Apprantly they can read your future too from the sediment left over.

And then for iced coffee i like the crushed ice vietnamese crap. I swear they have to put some sorta addictive drug like cocaine (or it could just be caffene.. whatever...) in it. Every time i hit Springvale or Footscray (Cabramatta is NSW equivalent, Sunnbank? is QLD) i must buy one.

I loooooove really strong coffee. I bought a bottle of the caramel syrup that they use in most cafes, it even makes instant pretty amazing. Hardly ever have sugar, if I do I can't stand more than one. Don't like iced coffee, bleh
I had coffee and chocolate-covered coffee beans for breakfast this morning. Not a thing I'd do every day, but I needed some extra incentive to start working out again, and it was very effective

Funny enough, I had some superb coffee at Malt in Mount Lawley (Perth) last Saturday night. And from my experiences, if you drink coffee in a nightclub people think you are a) odd, but also b) women seem to think you're cool. Go figure.

bumping because this thread deserves it.

So I recently (several months ago) got a new job, this brought the excitement of new coffee places! I very quickly discovered that the place in my building serves swill and exploration further afield was required. There is a Degani next door, but I make a habit of learning from my mistakes. After some consultation with my colleagues I found an awesome coffee shop called Cafenatics. Quality coffee, served strong, for $3.30. None of this fucking around asking if I want my long black in a large, medium or small cup. They also do 'coffee of the day' where each day you can try different coffees from around the world. And to put the icing on the cake all the staff are hawt.

Oh, look at the time... I'm off to get wired.

Wait, so they do Single Origin?

Keep that place close to your heart. The coffee place near home does Single Origin as well, and their Flat White and double machiatto's are the best I've had in Sydney.

Finding single origin in Melbourne is about as easy as making an arrow to the knee joke.

I shall give Cafenatics a go next time I'm in the city though. I normally load up on a triple shot latte before I head in to the city, would be good to have a solid trusted city joint.

Ordered the new intensity Nespresso capsule from their website - Kazaa (intensity 12). Darker and a more fuller bodied flavour, I like!

I've walked past the one at QV so many times now; I always ignored it because it looked a bit poncy, and well... it's in QV so I figured it must be rubbish.

Will have to try one now, given they look to be all over the place.

I only just noticed this thread!

I recently did a coffee appreciation course and was pleased to find that almost everything I knew about making coffee was wrong. After six hours I can now tame my espresso machine and make a mean brew.

Generally you want an extraction of 30 mls over 30 seconds and milk around 70 degrees. If you can nail this magic combination you'll get the crema from the coffee to bond with the fat molecules in the milk for a beautifully sweet sugar-free coffee. Whenever I'm asked if I want sugar I respond:
"Not if you do it right"

The most delightful hipster afternoon coffee to ask for is a macchiotoni. Cousin of the piccolo latte - its a flat white in a short glass.
Want one in Adelaide: hit The Coffee Branch on Leigh St.

The instant coffee culture is imbued by the entire generation of tasteless baby boomers. For this reason I don't drink coffee or discuss art or my dreams with my parents. Loathing wells forth when anyone asks for a hot coffee with 2 sugars. Usually it's overheard, but once a girl I was courting asked for one. The coffee was hot but I was lukewarm and bitter. The prevalence of such a culture instills me with fear whenever I order coffee in the suburbs.

A good quality burr grinder is a must.
I have to say though, there's quite a few few variables to producing a consistant good shot. Perfect grind, temperature, tamp pressure, freshness of the beans, perfect dose in the basket and so on. It's hard to get it right every single time. I reckon it's taken me 2 months to get a great shot out of the Silvia. When they pull now it looks like just after you've been poured a Guiness.

Double cappucino is the order of the morning.

Quick post for the benefit of all our Perth members.

Sometimes I grab a coffee at this little stand at the station near my place. The quality is variable, sometimes really good, sometime average. There is a girl who makes them good and a dude who makes them not so good, but hey for $3 I can handle it.

So this morning I go past and there is a new dude. Think 'what the hey, lets see whta he's like'. So I order my long black, dick around, fish out some change and hand it over. As I turn to go I hear "mate, mate! it's only $2.50", and the dude hands me change. I am happy with this (although also sad that I over paid for all my previous purchases here).

Coffe wasn't too bad either icon_smile.gif
