At the end of the day, say what you will about Australia, Australia Day or the aborigines, I'm glad I'm an Australian, cause otherwise I'll probably have been born in Italy, have no job, drink too much (even more than I do now) coffee, eat too much pasta and possibly use commas even more than I do now.

The big disk drive in the sky: How the giants of the web store big data.
Fascinating article on the technology that allows Google, Amazon and Microsoft to offer the cloud services that they offer. Clustered/distributed filesystems are really awesome.
(Also: Google processes about 20 petabytes of data per day.) _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

So Woolies is gonna close 100 of their Dick Smith stores...and then try to sell the business...
This article is cool... "Dick Smith vows to fight sale to foreigners"
| Quote: | | Asked why he would attack the foreign takeover of his namesake stores, Mr Smith said: "Because I'm a proud Australian and this is just continuing where all the wealth is going overseas and damaging our country. I would just point out all the time that this is further destruction of Australia." |
A13x, you work at Dick Smith right? Hope everything goes ok. _________________

| Quote: | | Mr Smith said he was not interested in buying the company and nor would any publicly listed company be interested in buying it. |
So he's going to "fight" the sale but wouldn't be interesting in it for himself again? Put up or shut up I guess. The article says he sold it over 30 years ago. Other than his name, it's not really got much to do with him anymore.
Not that the article seems to lay out how he plans to "fight" it. Just talking trash doesn't really constitute a fight in my opinion. _________________

Yeah Theo, there's something close to 400 in stores, so it's about a quarter, not too phased as my store is a strong performer, this is all set to happen over a matter of months/years.
If anything it's motivation for me personally. _________________

The store I started at 3 months ago, on the other hand, is a pretty weak performer. I more than hit my targets every week, but the store I'm working at will most likely get closed, especially since it's the smallest of the three stores in the CBD.
Luckily my rent and bills are so low that as long as I can get 5 hours a week elsewhere I'm completely covered by that and Centrelink. _________________

Finished up at Dick's today after 2 years. Good time to get out by the looks of it, don't think my store will be closed as we just recently moved to a brand new location and business has been decent but the other store in town I can't see surviving, they are hopeless.
Now JB... JB is a company I can get behind. Run by people who actually have a clue about how to run a tech business. From working at both JB is a massive improvement in every way.
Working at Dicks at store level has been awesome but management is frustratingly bad. It seems to be run by a bunch of old cunts trying far too hard and failing to rebrand the business as hip and happening to attract gen-y, whilst neglecting other parts of the business which desperately need rectifying.
Cringeworthy evidence of this was the official departure of handshakes and the introduction of high-fives as a greeting within the company. Of course noone at store level adhered but when the operating manager of the company came to our store it was awkward high-fives all-round. _________________

What? 'Sif not high-five! There is something very satisfying about a perfectly executed and alarmingly loud high-five. BAM! _________________

The first time I was introduced to it my area manager, 15 years my senior, was saying goodbye while I was in the middle of doing something. I put my hand out to shake his, not noticing he's standing there with his hand up, awkward flailing of hands ensued as both of us attempted to rectify our error, ended up in some breed of hybrid high-shake. Never again... or so I thought until I met the 50-something year old woman who heads the company, that high-five was quite off-putting.
Alex I bet you loved the stickers we had to wear that lasted about a week. "Who goes OMG for FPS?"... "Scott does". "Who knows the difference between HDMI and 1080P?" (it actually said that)... "Scott does". Corn factor off the scale. _________________

What's wrong with the Eurozone and what it means for the US:
Heiner Flassbeck is a senior economist with the UN. Worth watching, despite its length. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman
