There's always going to be a little bias in any review from any review site. |
RPG Fan does show a bit more than a "little bit" of bias though.
My favourite way of looking at it? 77% of their reviews are higher than the average from every single other reviewer and their average review score is 80 out of 100.
Sure, they do know rpgs better than some reviewers, but they're also overly positive with their reviews and scores.
Hell, 370 of their reviews, which is 76% of ALL their reviews, are 75% or over and 308 of them are 80% (66% of their reviews) or above.
That shows either major bias or some majorly soft scoring and reviewing. _________________

So does anyone know of any really good deals for the standard edition in Australia? The best I can see is still $88 preorder from game because you get a steelbook etc. But I was hoping to find it cheaper elsewhere...
It's just that at $88 I'm still considering importing. _________________

I see it as a result of how games are scored today. Let's be honest here; compared to movie reviews, games are reviewed leniently. 50% is hardly an average with video game reviews, it's more like 70%. Also there are a lot less bad games when it comes to RPGs so it's not surprising that 76% of their reviews are 75% or above. IGN and Gamespot give FPS and platformers 75% or more most of the time, isn't that major bias as well?
Look at their PS3 Review list. Ar Tonelico 3 has 67% and Trinity Universe 63%, that's fair. Only seven games score above 90%, all of which are deserving in my opinion. Their scores are more in line with user scores too which I think really says something. Nier is a great example of that.
Anyway I think we're going a bit off topic .

Maybe they're just using the Four Point Scale like almost every other video game site out there? _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

@ Pagan's Mind
Really? You thought that 88% for Nier was a fair score?
And 63% for Trinity universe was extremely forgiving for a game that appears to have been designed for a dreamcast era console. I would think 50% would be more accurate.
So im with Vervain here, and to be clear i know you are a huge RPG fan, so am i, i own well over 300 games (i know thats not alot for some people) and most of them are RPG's, so im a huge fan myself of the genre, but being a true fan is being able to sift out the real gems and not reward companies that deliver sub-par games.

Not sure but a quick phonecall can answer that question. JB have the same preorder bonuses(steelbook etc.), and I'm pretty sure that's instore. But they are a massive $1 more expensive. _________________

^ That steelbook and extras should be free with every preorder of FFXIII-2 in Australia. I have mine already.
I'm super excited to play FFXIII-2. So glad I'm taking some time off in late Feb. I'm going to hold off on playing it until then. _________________

Yeah, GAME are also offering the full set of pre-order bonuses. I haven't received mine yet though, I guess they're saving them for the actual release date. _________________

Nier was an incredible game. One of the best JRPGs from this generation. But it's a game that gets mixed reception because you need to really devote some time to.

Haha, well, I'm definitely not a hardcore gamer for RPGs . My knowledge of RPGs is pretty limited. I don't really play many of the bad ones I don't think... I mostly like the Tales of and Shin Megami Tensei series. OropherX, Kyle Clarthy and Admeister have really broadened my interests in the RPG genre over the past few years.

Wasn't the problem with Nier the fact that there were two different versions of the game, and the better of the two versions was the Japan-only PS3 version? _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Nier Replicant had Nier (the main character) as Yonah's brother. In Gestalt Nier was Yonah's father. They also changed Nier's character model to a much older father like figure. There are some differences in the soundtracks between the two versions and I would assume dialogue would be different too.

I thought the 2 version thing was the visuals of the main character. In Japan, the character was a dainty guy who never had a scratch on him, while the western version was an older ugly battle scarred veteran.

I'd heard that it was more than that from somewhere. Seems an odd thing to change.
Anyway, just had a quick crack at the FFXIII-2 demo. Really hope there's a Japanese audio option this time around, as the dub is even more painful than the original. Really hope I won't have to put up with Chocolina's voice every time I buy/sell something.
I just hope Squeenix don't pull the "It's not fair to XBox 360 owners" excuse for excluding Japanese voices this time around. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Fuck it, I'm ordering it from Game because I know I'll get it quicker than JB. Screw the $30 I'll save by buying it from overseas, I don't have a single player game to play at the moment... _________________

Well...This time they are both on one disc and more compressed, so i'm 90% sure there won't be japanese audio options. _________________

I wish I had that kind of money to throw around . Mightyape is a bit of a gamble because they might not ship it on the 2nd... I hope I don't have to wait too long.

I'd usually love to keep the $30...
Anyway just noticed that Harvey Norman have it advertised on their website for $78... Hmm, I wonder if all that other stuff is included if I buy it from there? _________________

That was true of the PS3 version as well. Squeenix originally promised that the Western release would have both tracks, but then went back on that promise.
Apparently, there is a version of FFXIII-2 with Japanese audio and English text, so I might head on down to Dungeon Crawl later in the week and have a look at that. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I believe it's the "Chinese language version" of the Asia region game. It has both Chinese and English subs, apparently.
Although, the "English language version" is exactly the same as the Western release.
