Skrillex is a lot lower than I expected. That pleases me.

@Benza, I usually find new tunes through trawling through a ton of review blogs. That being said, there's so much new music around that it's hard to find stuff I like. Have to weed out the stuff I don't care for, which due to the sheer volume of tunes around, takes an age. Tried to listen to JJJ a few times in the car, usually end up turning it off instantly and putting on radio subby, which only plays solid gold hits.

Another way I've found useful is the what.cd band map. It shows degrees of separation so to speak by mapping similar groups to each other in a graphical format.

I even found something interesting on Ptchfork the other day.

The stuff they don't play on Triple J interests me far more than the stuff they do. The demographic Triple J targets these days is pretty much those that actually bother to still listen to the radio. The internet is my source for new and interesting music. A number of times I've gone to vote over the last few years, a number of the songs I'd vote for don't even make it to the list.

Besides, who the smeg voted for Angus and Julia Stone last year? Not even the Seekers were that wimpy.

On another note, Art vs Science continually annoy the shit out of me. The frenchie song they got famous with was basically splicing together samples from Run DMC's It's Tricky and The Presets' My People. Nothing I've heard from them since have convinced me they have any more talent than simple copy/pasting.

Weren't Run DMC one of the early pioneers of sampling to start with?

Nah, RunDMC really didn't get into sampling until their later albums. And sampling had been around for well over 10 years before their first album. And I hope you're not trying to compare ArtvsScience to RunDMC in any way!

When I think of sampling, I always go to Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys. If you're going to pull samples across and mash them together, at least look at how the Dust Brothers did it there - and then just don't do it if you don't think you can get it to at least that quality.

Well only in the fact that they both used samples heavily, which I'm wrong on anyway so no.

Man that's a pretty unfairly high standard to hold em too I rekon. Parle Vou Fronce was just a fun dancy song. It's not high art or anything but it had an awesome filmclip so I'm willing to forgive it a lot.

It's been 22+ years. Are the lads in Art vs Science even that old?

Sampling is awesome.

Here's a quick beat (loop) my friend made, borrowing from the game Space Crusade.

How can you say that's not awesome?

ITT people forget that DJ Shadow's Endtroducing album exists (also Pre-emptive Strike because it has In/Flux on it.)

Also: Anti-Theft Device by Mixmaster Mike and The Audience's Listening by Cut Chemist.

I... forgot. icon_redface.gif

I actually finally got around to getting that record recently. It's every bit as awesometastical as I was led to believe.

ENTIRELY OFFTOPIC ANECDOTE: The other night, my friend and I were listening to records, and he pulled out this album by a French band called Space. The album was called Magic Fly and it came out in 1977, but godsdamn if it isn't proto-Daft Pank. The sound mix was surprisingly modern (if you listened to the first track without knowing, you might think it was from last year even), and only some of the basslines really hinted at it being from the 1970s.

But the thing that makes it pretty obvious that this was at least an influence on Daft Punk was the picture of the two guys in the band on the back, dressed in weird space suits and face-covering helmets. Hmm.

Then we switched it up and listened to Superunknown and Low-Life. Great night.

Shame about the follow up, it wouldn't be as bad if they were just like "Nup no more" but I swear every couple of years or so I hear a new story about how they're totally still together and the new album is going to be out any time soon.

A mate of mine from Krome kept on pimping an electro track that sampled/remixed the Xenon 2: Megablast theme. Good times. No idea what it was called or where I'd find it, though.

Xenon 2 Wiki wrote:
Soundtrack
The Bitmap Brothers co-operated with the British musician Tim Simenon to include the 1988 Bomb the Bass hip hop track "Megablast (Hip Hop On Precinct 13)" as theme music, which is also the origin of the game's subtitle. In turn, this song features many samples from Sly and the Family Stone song, "You Can Make It if You Try", and its theme seems heavily inspired[1] by the The Splash Band track "The End (Disco Version)" released in 1984, which is itself based on the theme of John Carpenter's film Assault on Precinct 13.
There are two versions of the track in the game: a nearly faithful rendition (only missing a few spoken lines) as the loading music, and a simplified version as the in-game background music. The Amiga version of the loading music is based on the same track, but significantly different, with such changes as helicopter sound effects at the beginning and end.
The game was one of the first instances of a computer being programmed to play a pop single with reasonable accuracy. Sections of the music were sampled and then re-sequenced. In the cartridge-based console versions, the music is radically simplified, being purely synthesized and lacking the voice samples of the computer versions.

Is this it?

Nope, it was an actual remix. Might have been made by him or someone else local, he was a DJ before joining/during Krome.
