ign is reporting the next xBox will be 6 times more powerful than the 360. Furthermore, the chipset is already in production. There is also a prediction of a fall 2013 (I presume in american seasons) release.

So, what do you think? Is the next Xbox going to be powerful enough? How do you think it will compare to the WiiU ? I'm not really an expert on the subject, but would love to hear some opinions.

Hm... let's apply the popular version of Moore's Law here.

Processing power (a parallel to transistor density) doubles every 18 months.
Xbox 360 was released in 2005
Xbox 360 hardware is roughly 7 years old.
So the processing power should have doubled 6-7 times.

2^6=64
2^7=128

So by now the next Xbox should be 64-128 times more powerful.

So what year did this new hardware come from?

6 times more powerful would be somewhere between these
2^2 = 4
2^3 = 8

2 and 3 doubles is 36-54 months later, or 3-4.5 years after the Xbox 360.

Microsoft's made a new Xbox with 2009 hardware!

Yeah I know my working is probably completely wrong =P

I'm pretty excited about the next gen beasts. They will have to be fully backwards compatible with the digital range already available.

mid-2013 is so far to wait though! I was hoping for release this year. Ah well.

Wii U is interesting, I don't see how Nintendo will be able to compete, I mean it's just crazy to release hardware which is already out-dated. Looking forward to E3 to see what else Nintendo have planned.

The current 360's performance could probably double simply by fixing their floating point processors. True story. No need to change clock rates or any other part of their architecture. Just fix floating point performance, you know, that one type of data that every modern 3D engine uses constantly.

...what, like when they released the Wii and the original DS? Just sayin'.

All consoles use outdated tech. Let's not turn this into PC vs consoles. Some of us like updating our gaming rigs every second week, some of us just want a hassle free gaming experience.

I just want Microsoft to take their time with the next console, they rushed to get the XB360 on to the market and as a result the failure rate of the machine was considerably high. I am going to assume they will get it right this time around.

Usually the testing phase, well a good testing phase, takes a bit of time and if they're looking for a 2013 release date, then 2012 should be the testing phase, which means they would have to finalize the hardware specs sometime this year.

It's probably safe to say that they've been working on the system for a number of years already. End of 2013 (Fall in the US) is almost two years away as well.

That said, high failure rates are probably favourable for them.

For sure, they would've been required to have something already finalised by now. They are just keep all their cards close to their chest.

They'd have to send out development consoles for the 3rd party developers, give them time to play around, understand the hardware, work out the best way to code for it, etc.

Then, depending on the studio/scope of game, it could take between 1-3 years to develop...

Yeah, well, no console manufacturer has had finalised hardware until a couple of months prior to shipping. It's a rarity to get a final hardware devkit before a console launch. Don't expect this one to be any different. If they're manufacturing chips already, well, they need something for the developers to develop on.

Another rumour going is that it won't allow you to play 'used' games at all.
I love my 360 but if they do that I'm out.

Not to mention folks like Nintendo are notorious for locking hardware features out until just on launch.

Wii U will be weakest next gen by a noticeable amount, but not to the same extent as the Wii (which was made weaker by numerous hardware factors). People will whine. I'll buy it because I want Mario/Zelda/Metroid.

I've heard rough specs of the PS4's most recent 'devkit' (as in, equivalent PC hardware specs to work with), but I know nothing of the 360. I simply figure everything will be tessellated to shit.

I second this motion. If it does happen i could see it a mile away with all this talk about online passes and stuff... only a matter of time before online passes evolve into cdkeys....

I heard late last year that proto kits for the new system were out there, although I have nothing I'd consider reliable (a forum post from a guy who does game development in Canada).

The most outlandish rumour I've seen about the new system is that it will have 3 SKUs: A "set-top" system with limited capability, a regular games console version and a "PC" version that will be fully capable of running Windows 8 among other things.

Not sure how much of that I'd believe, but it does hint at an ARM-based system.

It's a HD console which is all Nintendo really needed to do in my opinion. A Zelda or Metroid game in glorious 1080p is going to be amazing. I'm pretty psyched for it.

I really don't see all that much point. Most people have at least one DVD player on every TV, I know we have three on our main TV, and one on our other two. I doubt there is many people out there who would actually make use of a Wii DVD player.

I was about to post a thread about this but just noticed this thread. I'm 100% with Grim on this one; even if the next Xbox was release right now, it would be using outdated tech. But fair enough, it would still be impressive. If it's coming out near the end of next year, then yeah... they'll be shunting themselves yet again.

A blu-ray player is what we need but doesn't Sony own the rights to it? I wonder if the next Xbox will still use the standard dual-layer DVD?

Yes xbox have serious problems if they cannot equip a blu-ray player in their next product. A few games are beginning to come out with multiple discs now and that is a serious pain in the arse.

One thing I do hope though is for the ability to install the game to the hard-drive. It's the best feature hands-down.

Fixed that there for ya, chap. Sony and Microsoft have been talking plenty about serving games online for the next gen. It'd also tie in fairly neatly with the new OMG RUMOUR about disabling second hand games.

Sony doesn't own it, these guys do: Bluray Disc Association. For a nominal license fee Microsoft would be free to use bluray drives and discs. It's not dissimilar to DVD licensing (which Nintendo are avoiding)
