Stem cells used to treat human illness for the first time, eye sight of two women with severe vision loss improved.

And stem cells are a bad thing how?

Saw this on lapzods facebook account

Quote:
A boy has stunned medics with his ability to see in pitch black with eyes that glow in the dark.

Doctors have studied Nong Youhui's amazing eyesight since his dad took him to hospital in Dahua, southern China, concerned over his bright blue eyes.

Dad Ling said: "They told me he would grow out of it and that his eyes would stop glowing and turn black like most Chinese people but they never did."

Medical tests conducted in complete darkness show Youhui can read perfectly without any light and sees as clearly as most people do during the day.

All over the news sites atm;
http://www.news.com.au/top-stories/mob-sinks-slipper-into-nations-day/story-e6frfkp9-1226255249671

Thoughts? You can probably guess mine; the protesters with the sticks/stones/spears should've been removed or appropriately dealt (arrested, charged, etc) with and the tent city pulled down.

they have set their cause back a very long time...doesn't matter what you think of Gillard, that shit should not happen

If a group of people came at the US president like that, it would end very differently

Good way of looking at it actually.

An Aboriginal friend posted about it on FB yesterday and I was happy to see it, but you're right... definitely sets the cause back.

I had no idea there was such a thing as an Aboriginal Tent Embassy, despite it being around for 40 years. Like the article says, surely their original issues are dealt with. If they're not, maybe it's time to give up that approach anyway.

The protest looks like it got way out of hand over an inane little comment by Abbot. I can't believe they're not pressing charges on some of them. Disrupting a great event recognising people who risk their lives for us is downright shameful.

As Fetidchimp said, they have set their cause back. And likewise, regardless of my dislike of Gillard, in no way should she have been treated like that. I am absolutely disgusted.

And I'm not sure what to say to your comment theory; what else would we call it or celebrate a day of our heritage? For people like myself who's parents immigrated here years ago and were not part of the colonial era, or who are recent Australia citizens, what and when can we celebrate being Australian? Maybe we shouldn't celebrate ANZAC day in case we hurt the feelings of those living in our mists who lost loved ones in WW1 or WW2 at the hands of our diggers?

Not sure about you but I tend not to be ashamed of things I didn't do.

Is "Invasion Day" suggesting every non-Aboriginal should leave? We're all here now. We may as well try to Get Along.

Sorry, you misunderstand me. The people who disrupted the event should be ashamed.

shameful: worthy of or causing shame or disgrace

Fair enough!

Look, man, I'm not suggesting all non-aboriginals should leave. I just don't like the idea of celebrating an invasion (same as with Thanksgiving). If the Aussies in power today are truly sorry, it should be a day of mourning for the deaths of the people and the invasion of the land.

Spot on.

I think we should follow NZ and change our national day to the date we signed a treaty with the indigenous population.... oh wait Australia hasn't done that yet *ironic lolz*. Guess we should just keep it as the day Britain established a military outpost and forcible re-settled a bunch of their citizens in a hostile wilderness.

The thing I find laughable about our national pride is it revolves around the stupidest things. All we ever celebrate are sporting triumphs and fighting wars at the behest or our older, cooler friends. Even Australia day is kind of ironically silly, why do we have a national holiday to celebrate the establishment of a prison in "New Holland", but we don't have one to celebrate Federation.... you know Federation right? When Australia was actually created.

I think you're severely missing the point of ANZAC day if you think it's a celebration of fighting a war.

Hell if you think it's a celebration.

^^We do have Federation Day but it is on the same day as another public holiday, the New Year!. I know many people who thought Federation Day is Australia Day.

Hell if you think it's a celebration.

Check the first definition of the word celebrate from dictionary.com:

verb (used with object)
1.
to observe (a day) or commemorate (an event) with ceremonies or festivities

It just means observing a day or event... not necessarily in a positive way.
