I disagree, but that's me. In this day and age, given the difference between (current) consoles and PCs, I see no reason why PC games can't have high resolution textures. Either put it on the disc, and if there is no space, another separate disc, and failing that, make it freely downloadable.

I call it a lazy PC port because I like fancy high resolution textures and ME2 had none, meanwhile ME1 did, and I want them. Selfishness at the core.
And Crysis 2's DX11 was only lazy if you happened to be an ATi card holder, because Crytek and nVidia getting cosey is no secret. On nVidia cards its the polar opposite of lazy. Crysis DX11 is probably the best optimised/looking game I own. Runs unbelievably well given the incredible amount of tessellation and crap going on, even with the awful tessellation problems (see: water, over tessellation of concrete, etc).
All I ask is developers look at my personal wants and needs, and my hardware, and build games that cater specifically to my hopes and dreams. _________________

So how large are these fan-made HD texture packs? I can't imagine they're the 60GB of GooberMan's hyperbole _________________

*ahem*
That additional 60GB is a realistic estimate for Rage. The reason that game is 23GB to begin with is due to all the unique texture data used in the game. And thanks to the way graphics hardware works, the next feasable step up is effectively to double the dimensions of the texture data (powers of 2, look it up). So, for example, a 512x512 image's next step up while operating on 3D hardware is 1024x1024. As you can see, 512x512 fits in to 1024x1024 4 times.
Apply that to Rage. Unique texture data quadruples in size.
Hell, that Half Life cinematic pack is 10GB from memory.
tl;dr - Goober knows what he's talking about. _________________

I've got just shy of 500mb in texture packs. HQ skins for all twelve squadmates, Liara, Shepard's various armors and casual wear, Normandy crew uniform, Normandy window fix, Blue Suns armour, HQ galaxy map, and some of the generic NPC uniforms. _________________

But it's ok for them to build it for a near decade old console and then apply it to every other system they release the game on?
Sorry, you're releasing a game on PC, build it for that market (i.e. provide the option for higher quality textures). Not all PC games have bad textures but it seems increasingly the case that the ones with console ports/main development do.
An example of how it should be done;
http://cfile1.uf.tistory.com/original/16300A444DD5491F041126
http://cfile25.uf.tistory.com/original/17300A444DD54939063A94
(can't wait to see what the 360 version looks like for comparison)
But hey Jarrod, if you're happy enough to buy a game on PC with textures made for a console that has the memory capacity of computers before the Year 2000 bug was a big deal and then wait for modders to release said higher quality textures; good for you.

So... Skyrim!
and here's my character in her Theives Guild outfit
Speaking of texture packs my Skyrim is now a little modded, I have a HD texture pack (amongst some other things) that makes the game look a lot better if you ask me.

Looks like the Realistic Water Texture mod I was speaking about above. Its really, really incredible how much of a difference it makes, especially to large bodies of water, as evident by Pagan's post. _________________

I thought it might be that Thing is, I installed it and all it did was basically make my water look flat and textureless. _________________

The water texture mods make my water animation super sped up, it's weird.
Back to Mafia 2... I think the 'override' AA settings in the Nvidia settings work better than the 'enhance'.

Mafia II is one of the nicest looking games ever. Has probably my favourite use of SSAO too.
Pixie: Do any of your other mods have water textures? Trying to load multiple water textures will cause problems I think. Otherwise I have no idea.
Make sure, if you haven't already, to tinker with the uGrid setting too, and do the ini tweaks to enable stuff that the game doesn't do normally (like self tree shadows). _________________

Yup, it's the Realistic Water Texture mod Jarrod linked to.

Try forcing 16xAF in your video card control panel. After starting the Skyrim launcher, click "data files", and tick "load loose files". RealisiticWaterTextures.esp should be in that list too.

Slowly starting to get into SWTOR now.
