why don't you just press the "stop loading this page" button in between the loading of the content and the redirect to the black page?
or does this only work with "university level" slowness of internet?

So far 4chan is blacking out all text on their site, SMBC is down, Nedroid has a censored comic, Reddit is still up and Fark are promising to 'go white in support of SOPA' so I have no idea what's happening with that.

All in all, looks like tomorow is going to be a boring arse day at work for me.

Fark "going white" is Drew getting drunk and greenlighting anything in the submission queue until he passed out. I believe a threat was also made to delete the politics tab or something.

Apparantly, Drew is already down for the count. This thread is awesome, though.

You know wikipedia annoyed me so much with their 'personal appeal' ads, however if they had a donate option now I would consider it if I had enough to spare.

Why do we have to break the DNS?

A good article from the guys at Dyn.com (they of the dyndns service) about the technical problems with SOPA.

While a bunch of other sites are going "dark" to protest SOPA/PIPA, we're over the moon about the whole thing. Why? Honestly, we've been bringing you the latest news happening across the internet for 12 years, and we're tired. And SOPA/PIPA is the perfect excuse to quit.

This is somewhat related to the SOPA thing, and is probably going to get buried, despite the terrible implications:

SCOTUS rules that Congress can remove a work from the public domain.

Also, I'm just going to put a link to the always-excellent Ars Technica, who are spending the day posting a bunch of really interesting articles on SOPA and related topics. Well worth a read if you want to feel really informed on these matters.

If this is only in the context of complying with the Berne Convention, it's fine. After all these are about as old as Mickey Mouse, who still isn't out of copyright. Although I'm not entirely sure why the particular works are public domain anyway.

However if this is going to be a wider trend, why would Congress even want to take things out of public domain? Apart from complying with international treaties, all I can think of is Disney paying them money =P

i just love how the likes of the mpaa and the companies involved with it seem to equate free promotion with infringing copyright.

Great quote from John Rogers blog
Quote:
Any screenwriter who thinks he loses more money to piracy than to Hollywood studio accounting is a child.

as someone on /b said, it is more about the record and movie companies becoming obsolete and them grasping the precipice of being irrelevant, especially record companies.

Maybe imdb should have gotten in on the act, turned everyone into John Malkovich playing Samuel L.

The thing is movie companies are making more monkey than ever, even indexed for inflation. They're not seeing file sharing for what it is; free advertising.

The recoard companies are different. Teh cost of music was artifically inflated for decades before the companies and retailers could. When it's possible to pay a fair amount for just the songs you want, the crap they were peddling and padding beforehand fails to net the revenue they used to get and the bloated dinosaurs fall down.

The last five albums I bought were direct from the artist's website, given them all the money.
