|
|
|
|
Ongoing developments being discussed here. Long and short of it;
- THQ has been in an financial shit hole for awhile for making one poor business decision after another. Their doom has been inevitable for some time.
- They've scrapped Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online, their next big MMO.
- They've cancelled every game projected to launch in 2014 onwards.
- They apparently returned an IP to Disney with no attempt at reimbursement.
- They're talking with Asian studios about acquisitions/licenses/etc.
All games for 2014 onwards cancelled, simply put, means the company is not forecasting any game production at that point in time. Thus, the company is not interested in producing games, and is instead looking to pack up shop and sell stock.
THQ is over.
Here's a list of studios/ips that THQ own, that will have to elsewhere or disappear into the night.
- Relic Entertainment (Homeworld, Company of Heroes, various Warhammer 40,000 games)
- Vigil Games (Darksiders series. Was working on WH40K MMO)
- Volition (Saints Row, Red Faction)
- Homefront franchise, last of which was apparently getting a sequel at the hands of Crytek
- inSANE, made by Volition, and directed by Guillermo del Toro
- THQ Montreal, a huge studio founded with Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Desilets
- Devil's Third, Itagaki's new game
Some stuff might see a release. Metro: Last Light, Darksiders II, and everything scheduled for 2012 will definitely be released for sure. 2013 titles like Devil's Third and inSANE? Really hard to say. If they think the investment is worth the final pay out, then yes. If they figure its better to cut their losses given this ship has well and truly sailed, either might get cut given they're still a year away.
Who knows where people will end up. _________________

Wow, they really managed to fuck that up.
With all the complaints that Microsoft isn't churning out enough exclusives, this would be the perfect time for them to buy up some IPs/studios and fix that. They definitely have the money for it. _________________

After picking up Rare, MS would have to be a bit weary about picking up new studios though

What about just buying the IPs? Because the likelihood of anybody completely buying out THQ is pretty low. _________________

Wow, that's a lot of stuff with big names getting shut down. Was really excited to see where THQ montreal was going to go too. _________________

Shame to hear about the 40k brand which they did a lot of good stuff with. Dawn of War was an excellent RTS and I thoroughly enjoyed Warhammer: Space Marine and was looking forward to a sequel. _________________

ITT: StorminNorman shows a thoroughly naive view of the world by thinking 2.6 million sales of one game can prop up a global corporation with offices on several continents. _________________

Quite the opposite, it along with Space Marine and their WWE/UFC games have been selling very well. The problem is that they lost such a massive amount of money on their other projects that the profit from their successes wasn't enough to keep them afloat. _________________

ITT: We don't write 'ITT' anymore because it is clearly in this thread and not another.
Going back to the topic at hand...
I'd envisage Relic being bought by a decent publisher, surely? As I said their 40k stuff was top notch. _________________

Pretty crazy news. Hopefully Relic, Volition and Vigil continue onwards somewhere else in healthier fashion, as all three are really excellent developers. _________________

Yeah, I can see another company such as MS or Sony snapping up Volition, they've been doing a great job with the Saints Row series. I'd like to see the Red Faction series continue too, but we'll see.
Hopefully Itagaki's game will make it through this, I've been looking forward to seeing how Devil's Third turns out. _________________

2007: Stock price $30
2009: Stock price $5
2011: Stock price $5
2012: Stock price 66c. Market cap $45million
GFC hit these guys hard. Looks like they really struggled over the last year. A buyout isn't impossible, they cap isn't terribly high.
Here's hoping Relic get to keep doing their WH40K thing. _________________

I'm hoping Volition stays as a 3rd party dev. I'd hate for people to miss out on stuff like Saints Row due to exclusivity. But yeah, they're a cert to get picked up, seeing as they came up with Geo-Mod as well, which was a big deal at the time.

Saints Row....
Hopefully those guys can get a second chance somewhere. They're clearly too mentally unstable to work a normal job. _________________

Is being developed by an independent studio and is funded by Viacom. It will be fine.
Volition and Relic will both definitely be picked up because they have shown they can pump out good games quickly and THQ Montreal will also get picked up because of all the Canadian tax breaks which will make them relatively inexpensive to run when compared to other studios. Vigil's chances might rely on Darksiders 2. _________________
