I played the demo, even though I didn't really enjoy XIII. I think the battle system is subtly different somehow, and it felt a little better than in XIII. I liked that the area in the demo had some good reasons to explore it, and even that it could be explored. Also, having monsters fight longside you seems like it will add another layer of strategy, which XIII really needed IMO. I also prefer the way battles begin in XIII-2 over XIII, I actually like random battles. I just wish you could escape battles before you actually initiated them (or maybe you can, and I missed somthing here). I liked the puzzle in there, too, even if it was a bit simple.

Gameinformer rates it 8. I've cancelled my preorder.

spoiler - can an admin spoil tag it?

"why is that thing there? A time paradox" . apparently the reason for anything that happens.................... and it ends on a "to be continued". I'll wait for the complete release.

What if a complete release never comes though? Or is Japan only like all the other FF rereleases?

Are you serious? An 8 is a good score.

I played the demo and I thought it was pretty good. I'm gonna have to disagree with you guys on one thing and that's the graphics. I thought they were stunning. The character models look incredible. If you look closely you can see water sliding down the character models when you stand in the rain.

The battle system is exactly the same except they've added QTE button presses. It's very GoW-esque during the boss battles. I think it breaks up the monotonous of battle which is nice. I didn't really like the monster companions and dressing them up in little bow-ties and hats, it feels a bit gimmicky and adds nothing to the gameplay. I would have liked dressing up Serah though icon_razz.gif. I'm hoping there's more party members in battle than just Serah, Noel and a monster companion.

Anyway initial impressions are good with the highlights being the visuals and music.

If a complete version never comes, I WILL pick it up for $30 (or less) just like you can on XIII now.

Its not because its an 8. I liked the battle system and was hyped for this release "fixing" the series, but I have better ways to spend my dollars and time at the moment then investing 30+ hours in a the story that is incomplete and (allegedly) a heap of time travel paradoxes justifying "cool" scenes and has you playing 80% of the game with the b-grade characters.

If anyone recognizes my name than you know i hate Square-Enix and want it to die a painful and satisfying demise. I hated FF13 with similar good reason.

But to be fair i downloaded the demo and completed it fully. I did the sidequests, i completely raised several of the monsters to the max and i captured all monsters i encountered. (in fact im sure i had them all)

I agree with all the negatives already mentioned but felt the need to point a few out.

The Chocobo sales lady in red had me thinking of the Claptraps in Borderlands and how i wanted to shoot everyone of them when they said "Look at me im dancing im dancing!" Likewise she needed a bullet to the brainpan or at least a gag. I would have preferred an electronic vendor otherwise her prescence at every location means that she is there for your party's benefit only and serves no other purpose to the worlds inhabitants.

Plus if she is a timetraveller as well, why did her presence at the site not awaken the 1st boss which was obviously being studied for seemingly a long period of time by the locals but as soon as our intrepid heroes which i respectfully call "cheerleader 1" and "token justin bieber/disney chracter" appear through the time device this motionless monstrosity instantly comes to life gunning for them....(wait a minute, of course! its because they are the lead characters!! - silly me i get it now, they are more important than everyone else.) I certainly hope that is explained.......wait a minute, what do i care i wont be buying this game. All i can say is i cant WAIT for the review icon_biggrin.gif

Wasn't lots of DLC confirmed too though? I'm expecting an "epilogue" dlc like Prince of Persia that will come out with a true true ending that you beat expecting answers, but may possibly leave you with even more of a cliffhanger.

My stance is like Emech's I'm afraid. I'll wait for some more reviews or an awesome deal and then decide if I should buy it. Although $50 you can't really go wrong....

I'll be importing the standard edition. The CE is nice but I'm not falling into that trap like last time. I paid $140 for the CE of FFXIII and it was like $40 in a couple of months.

I plan to buy the standard edition from JB as soon as it's released. After how much I liked FFXIII, there wasn't much that SE could do to put me off this sequel. As far as I can see, they've fixed pretty much every complaint that people had about the first game, abs it feels as though it'll be a different experience than FFXIII was.

The monster capturing is pretty cool, it strongly reminds me of the system FFX-2 International, but it's even better. icon_smile.gif

Just being devils advocate about it, just wanted to see if anyone else was thinking the same thing when they saw it.

I would have thought that if some random guy from the future was going to help a young woman through some pretty serious time travel journeys to right wrongs etc, someone like Auron from FF10 or an older woman may have lent some maturity to the decisions being made is all.

But if thi is anything like FF10-2 than following any kind of logic is going to go out the window with this one.

Ok, so it has a generic spiky haired protagonist. So has every Final Fantasy game. So do a whole bunch of other jRPG's. So do a whole bunch of Anime. They wouldn't be generic characters if it wasn't a popular set of traits that sells games. Can't really fault Square for that.

Besides, Noel is much better than Hope was.

I like his designs too (especially his FFX and FFX-2 ones)! Serah is the true main protagonist of FFXIII-2, its been nice to see a shift away from the strictly male protagonist trend of the previous FF games (with FFX-2 being the only exception).

As for Noel's design not being appropriate...I look at him like Future Trunks from DBZ. A young guy who decides to travel back into the past to fix his world. Not all time travellers have to look all grizzled and super-badass, they come in all shapes and sizes. Just look at Doctor Who. icon_razz.gif

Bitch what?

As for the character design, I think the point isn't so much 'oh look we have a pubecent spikey haired anime pretty boy' rather that, 'oh look we have a pubecent spikey haired anime pretty boy again'

That shit is getting really fucking old. Square pretty much lost any chance of being able to justify this shit for story reasons when they did that retarded shit with Nier.

Ah, how could I forget FFVI! My bad. Anyway, I think my point is pretty clear, female protagonists in the FF series are rare.

As for the spiky dudes, what can you say? Those types of characters are popular in Japan, which is exactly why we're seeing them again. It really doesn't bother me much, I've come to expect it in Japanese media. I wouldn't mind seeing a little less of it I guess, but it's not something I have any control over. Stress less, I say.

And just accepting lazy unoriginal character designs without question is why they keep happening.

The problem is it seems like they're designing the characters to fit into specific popular archetypes instead of, just designing the character that works the best for the game. (Again them turning Nier from this to this so he'd be more popular in japan pretty much confirms that) And that's just lazy design that leads to poor games.

There's a difference between accepting it, and recognising that you can't do anything about it. I can whinge as much as I like about it, but what's the point?

You can label it as lazy game design, maybe it is, but taking risks is not something you want to do too often when you're spending so much time and money on developing a game.

If you want to develop good games you need to take risks, if you want to develop a stale marketable brand name you play it safe. The final fantasy games by there nature are about taking risks. Playing it safe wouldn't be resetting everything with an entire new world every installment. So a direct sequel is already going the 'playing it safe' route. It just seems like Square have really lost the plot with the FF games of late.

Haven't Square completely changed the battle system for XII and then in XIII? You can't put it down to 'not taking risks.'
