Never played the sequel though (I don't know why I guess it was due to the poor reviews).

If you order this from Amazon, can you just play it? How is the lag? Will you be able to switch to a new server once it launches in AU?

Is there anywhere online to buy it (digitially?)

i never finished KOTOR2 either. i don't really rememebr the reason now, but yeah... i didn't.

i don't know that it'll mean much though. Bioware didn't make KOTOR2, and i noticed during several interviews and guided walkthroughs, the interviewer would often say "KOTOR 1 and 2" but the bioware rep would always only mention KOTOR, and never the sequel.
(doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it is like they were ignoring it then, so potentially ignoring it for story too.)

i ordered from Amazon, and yep - plugged the code in when i got it and could play straight away (well, you need to input a CC for when your free month is up, but you can cancel before then if you don't like it.)

there were, but they had sold out recently - not sure if they're back online.

Lag: slightly better than WoW in my experience. latency around 150-200ms (WoW was up around 300 for me).
not sure about the AU servers deal. they've said they're exploring options for Australians and New Zealanders who imported to switch, but what that means is anyone's guess.

If they do implement a server switch, it'll more than likely be a similar experience to Rift. As it is, an Aussie server might be a good excuse to start a new character class anyway. I'm in love with my smuggler though.

i don't know what they did for Rift, so can't comment.

i wouldn't be surprised if all it means is a server whose time is set to AU time (which is what WoW did), but who knows, we might end up with actual local servers.

I'm pretty sure they are planning on making 'local' servers somewhere in asia, most likely Singapore. This then creates a lot of problems as a lot of ISPs in Australia (Optus, Internode and others) have a different routing from Telstra and go through the West Coast of America before Asia. So a 'local' server will actually result in a ping of ~600 for a significant proportion of Australians. This was seen in Starcraft 2 where basically the majority of Australians went to the West Coast server over the oceanic alternative. Who knows if they'll have a transfer service up by then, I'll most likely be done with the game by then or be ready to make a republic alt.

I haven't played the game too much recently , I need to get back into it. My advice for anyone that is treating this like a single player MMO i.e just playing for the story etc I urge you to make an Imperial Agent, from what I've played and heard from others the story is very good and has some awesome dark side choices icon_cool.gif

The issue with local server hosting for games like WoW has always been the cost of hosting locally. I doubt that's since changed.

I wanted to ask everyone, someone might know... I have my cousin that has unlimited download and very fast internet, he is getting the game. So my question is, can I just copy the downloaded files from his computer to mine... like the install file or something like that. He has bougth the digital download copy. I have a limited download so just wanted to know if this was possible to both save me time and also save my download quota? Any help would be great, cheers.

I don't think that would be a problem, the files aren't linked to an account, you just login once it's installed and download any updates.

Quote:
EB Discusses Its Decision To Grey Import Star Wars: The Old Republic

Today we revealed that EB Games is selling grey imported copies of Star Wars: The Old Republic in stores across Australia, but there are some unanswered questions. The Old Republic isn’t your typical game, it’s hardly a product you can buy, install and forget about: Australian players will require ongoing support, they’ll have to deal with overseas servers, and potential issues regarding retail keys not working out of the box? How will these problems be rectified considering the fact there is no local infrastructure available in Australia?

We spoke to EB Games to get some answers.

According to EB, its stores began importing and selling Star Wars: The Old Republic because EA and Bioware hadn’t yet provided an official release date for the game.

“As no official release date has been announced for Star Wars: The Old Republic in Australia,” began the EB spokesperson, “EB Games has seen it in the best interest of our customers to make available imported copies of the game from today to avoid further disappointment felt by the game’s avid Australian fan base.”

EB believes any issues local customers that arise in Australia will be adequately dealt with. There’s no need to incur huge phone bills when customers can use a variety of different online services to solve their problems.

“Should customers require assistance with any issues, there are a variety of ways to reach customer service overseas without the need to incur any cost including blogs, forums and email via Bioware’s world-class online support centre,” said the spokesperson.

The Old Republic’s launch, for the most part, has gone reasonably well, but there have been some issues — online queues, connection issues. The most worrying problem for Australian consumers purchasing the game early, however, is the fact that some retail boxes have keys that haven’t been activated on the overseas servers. Bioware has been dealing with that issue by providing new keys over the Origin service. However, since the game hasn’t been launched in this region yet, that won’t work for Australians. What happens then?

We spoke to NSW Fair Trading, who informed us that, since the game is being grey imported by EB Games, any issues players have with Star Wars: The Old Republic is EB’s direct responsibility. In NSW, at least, EB are legally bound to give gamers a full refund if they have any problems with the game.

“The Retailer has an obligation to fix the problem, and consumers only have to deal with the retailer as far as this is concerned,” claimed the Fair Trading representative. “The retailer must offer a refund or an exchange and consumers don’t have to accept the exchange.”

According to NSW Fair Trading, this doesn’t just apply to issues where the game’s key doesn’t work. If consumers are having online issues, such as lag from playing on overseas servers, the retailer still has to provide a refund if the consumer isn’t satisfied.

EB, however, seems to have accepted this responsibility. EB is informing consumers who purchase Star Wars: The Old Republic that the game is an import version, and claims that any issues players have will be resolved quickly and effectively.

“EB Games prides itself on providing superior product and customer service to our loyal customers,” claimed the EB rep. “While we haven’t encountered any issues surrounding retail keys, we can ensure that any problems that may arise will be resolved promptly via our customer service team.

“EB Games number one priority is our customers. We work closely with all of our partners to ensure that we can deliver a superior experience for them and will continue to do so in the future.”

Just an update on this... My mate downloaded the files and I just copied the whole folder and pasted it onto my computer and it worked perfectly... so if you wanted to get it but didnt have the quota, then this will work and saves you time. I just bought a Key of the net and it came straight away.

Playing it and enjoying every min of it. Being my first MMO it has got alot in it and I can see the addictive nature of an MMO now. I would suggest it if you were on the fence to play it or not as the Story is really good but grouping with players is even more fun.

How big is the client download? Having heard so many people say that you can just solo it and treat it as another KOTOR, has my interest really piqued atm and am leaning towards getting it. I'm either going to buy a key online or just get a copy from EB, not quite sure yet.

20gb +, atm for the most part I'm just soloing it as a mercenary (advanced bounty hunter) but there are bits such as flash points that you'll just get cut down too easily unless you're in a party.

Haha, I might have to wait to buy a physical copy then - that's pretty big for my small cap atm.

Yeah it is about 25GB worth... If you know someone who has downloaded it, then you can just copy the whole folder over to your computer with no issues... thats what I did and worked perfectly and just bought a digital key of the net.

Bought this over the weekend, downloaded and installed.

I am really hoping it's good and gets better because my first impressions are it is very, very basic. Visually especially.

I've been known to change my mind after initial impressions of games, but so far the whole thing looks and feels 5 years too late.

Actually makes me miss Rift after 6 mths off.

Judging from the Gamespot review, it's just another polished cookie cutter MMO. Though unlike Rift, it will probably hold subscriptions because it is Star Wars.

Give me EQ any day.

Got a physical copy from EB yesterday during my day off and I've only managed to play for a few hours but so far I really dig this game. I'm treating it like KOTOR and just grouping up when needed and so far I'm enjoying it. Playing a Sith Inquisitor named Jaehiri on the server Dreego's Pleasure Palace.

I like how it's making me do 'Kill Missions' w/o actually having to go run back and forth between a quest giver, it's just tacked on to the current quest and you get the XP rewards instantly. It seems like they've hidden a lot of the 'grind' aspects that WoW had which is a good feeling since I hated the fact that I knew I had to grind out stuff.

The UI needs a bit of work though but I'm sure that will got sorted out at some point. Also supposedly there are high res textures that aren't activated or something because running it on 'high' doesn't really look that high according to some screenshots I've seen out there.

All in all, I really like this game and am glad that I picked it up and gave it a shot.

Things I wished I knew 5 levels ago, #1

When you choose your advance class at lvl 10, the class skills vendor has two tabs of skils, one for the base class, one for the advance class.

I've been running around for 5 levels using the base abilities and wondering why it was so hard icon_redface.gif

Another thing I have just learnt the hard way... make sure your crew skills and crafting are suited to what your class and role is... I learn the hard way and leveled them up quiet a bit to find out that they were not suited and now I have the proper skills but starting all the way at the begining again! But the best thing I ever did because it makes it so much better that buying everything in the auction house.

GameTraders at North Lakes was selling it when I went in there yesterday. Can't remember how much it was though. I'll definitely be interested in trying this out, though I'll most likely wait for it to get released in Australia, just started playing Rift anyway.

if you're not fussy with digital download, you can try g2play. Currently its sitting at about 65.50 but the prices have fluctuated quite a bit (I picked it up a bit before christmas at $58 from them).

They send you a key, you add it to your origin account which redirects you to the star wars site and you go from there. Be aware it is a 20-25gb download, so if you're on a small cap, that could own your months data.
