^ Probably just a nod to SMB1.

Mario is just about the only game I can think of that still uses 'lives', and even though this concept is obviously outdated in modern gaming, can you imagine the outrage if they got rid of the Green Mushroom and the 1Up sound effect? They're not necessary with regards to gameplay, and it's not like you lose progress when you get a game over, but I think it's still an essential part of the Mario experience. Anyway, I wouldn't equate the amount of lives to the difficulty of a game in 2011. If that was the case, Super Meat Boy (infinite lives) would be the easiest game ever icon_biggrin.gif

So I'm playing Super Mario Bros. 3 tonight (one of my favourite games of all time), and I realised how similar Super Mario 3D Land is to it. The Tanooki tail, the ship levels, the blocks that jump around, the cloud stages etc. Maybe that's one of the reasons I love it so much, it reminds me of my favourite Mario game of all time.

God, I LOATHE the Cosmic Mario levels, feels like a cheap way to increase the difficulty.

Is there anyway to tell if you finished a level with Mario or Luigi? This is one of the things to finish right?

Said it a few posts back, but you only see the M and L completion icon next to the complete flag once you finish Special 8-8 and defeat Bowser a 2nd time.

Rad, got all 3 coins for every level now. Did anyone unlock the 'final' final level? Might put this game down for a while before I attempt to get the gold flags and beat the levels again with Luigi.

Just last night finished off bowser the first time, now gotta go back and save Luigi. My impressions of the game so far are that it's good, but not quite as good as the Galaxy games. Probably just slightly better than NSMB wii though. I just think Galaxy has better variety and pacing. I also prefer the exploration of Galaxy compared to the timed runs on 3D land.

If I found New Super Mario Bros on the DS frustrating, would I find this frustrating as well?

something about the new DS ones didn't sit well compared to the SNES classics I know and love.

NSMB DS is one of my least favourite Mario games, meanwhile SMB3DL is sublime.

If only Nintendo released a demo.

Shadow, if you can get to the EB on Swanston street, you can try it out upstairs, at the Nintendo Experience.

The first half of the game is really easy, but some of the Special World levels towards the end can get a bit frustrating. Some levels require sprinting and precision all at once...

Shadow, it's not a side scroller like NSMB, but it's not deep like Galaxy.
It's kind of a mix between the two. And it is bloody amazing (and if you disagree, you can always resell it on eBay)
