I don't buy that "not a prequel" talk at all. Even if it doesn't deal with the aliens, it is still directly linked to the movie Alien.

^ That's a lot more than a "strand" of DNA. If it takes place in the same universe and revisits important elements (Space Jockies, Weyland-Yutani) then as far as anybody is going to be concerned it is a prequel. Relating to previous characters or story lines doesn't really factor into it.

I always took the "not a prequel" line as just empty hype-building jargon.

Of course... there's always the possibility that they're not BSing and it really isn't a prequel...

Everyone expects Prometheus takes place before Alien... But what if it actually takes place... after Alien Resurrection?

Wait...

Wait a goddamn second...

The film shares "strands of Alien's DNA"...?

Could that mean what I think it means?

Its not a prequel in the traditional sense of a prequel, in that it tells a specific story aimed at leading into Alien. Scott didn't want to do this, but instead create a stand alone story that is set in the same universe and thematically ties into events of the Alien series, though without the Alien series being necessary viewing.

It's a prequel, just not a direct prequel to the Alien films.

Yeah it's a prequel. It's not a direct lead up to Alien, but it looks to be exploring the lore behind the Space Jockeys and an earlier version of Weyland-Yutani, which is enough for me to call it a prequel. I also don't buy the 'not a prequel' talk.

Sure, but if the director said the words "it's not a prequel" then it isn't.

I'm not reading anywhere where the director says that this isn't a prequel at all, just that it isn't a direct prequel to Alien.

Quote:
Prometheus will explore the advanced civilization of an extraterrestrial race responsible for the origins of modern humans on Earth,[3] as well as the background of the alien creature which made its first appearance in the 1979 film

Quote:
speaking to MTV on February 12, 2011, Fassbender stated the film was still an Alien prequel so-to-speak, saying, "Prometheus is absolutely connected to Alien... There's a definite connecting vein."[53] In a June 2011 interview, screenwriter Damon Lindelof claimed it will be a prequel to the Alien films, but follow a different story, in the sense that "a true prequel should essentially [precede] the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different, feature different characters, have an entirely different theme, although it takes place in that same world. That was my fundamental feeling about what this movie wanted to be".

It's a prequel alright.

It's a prequel alright.

Your source is from February. Mine is from November. It's not a prequel, it just shares one thing with the Alien movie...

The last eight minutes of the “Prometheus” story evolve into “a pretty good DNA of the ‘Alien’ one.”

Get over it.

Its not a prequel in the traditional sense like the Star Wars prequels but its set in the same universe, the same company, exploring the question nobody bothered to ask in any of the sequels "who is the space jockey?" its set before the original Alien movie by Mr Scott, so yes it is a prequel.

There is more to the Alien universe than a Xenomorph.....

are the comics canon with the movies? Or are the movies only canon with the other alien movies?

Basically what I'm trying to say is that is Predator canon in the Alien movies?

Nope I dont consider Predator canon in Alien movies, Fox tried to tie them in with those terrible AvP movies. Having said that though I am a fan of Predator too.

Fox didn't tie em together with the AVP movies (Although they did suck)

The comics with the AVP stories started in like 1989, so that's predating Alien 3.

If the Alien comics are canon, then I don't see why the AVP comics wouldn't be? (The movies obviously aren't though... cause they were balls)

Sorry I should of been more clear, I only consider the movies canon, I have read into a bit of the EU but to me its only the movies for me, I would probably tie Resurrection in with AvP too.

AvP began after Predator 2 where at the end you see the trophy room of the Predators and there's a Xeno skull on the wall. Dark Horse then went ahead and did heaps of fucking awesome comics with AvP and then some good games came out too.

It's pretty much non-canon, though there's a lot of subtelties and similarities that tie the two together. I've read most of the comics and it also blew my mind a little bit that they didn't follow some of the stories in the comics for the AvP films, or hell even doing the LV1201 story from the AvP2 game. That was great.

^ other way around. AVP comics came first by about 18 months, then when they were making Predator 2, they stuck the skull into the film. (even if you take the film's pre-production into account, it doesn't work because you'd also need to account for the comic's pre-production. thus, comics first.)

the comics and videogames are far closer to Canon than the films were, but yeah, none if it is canon. a shame, because the franchise could've been so much better than it was.
(that said - James Cameron was rumoured to have actually liked the first AVP film, so who knows, maybe he could return to his Alien 5 script and properly combine the 2?)

Preposterous. AvP was awesome and Cameron says so himself. The only thing Cameron doesn't like is glass.

maybe he changed his mind again (or maybe that was after AVP2).
i'm pretty sure i remember reading that he was writing Alien 5 when AVP1 was announced, so he shelved A5 because of pretty much what he said in that video - he decided that Fox wasn't worthy as they were simply cashing in.

but i'm almost positive i read after it came out that he actually liked it (the first one), ranked it 3rd of all the Alien films (presumably after 1 and 2.... not necessarily in that order...)

this prequel could be something to turn him around again though.... it'd be nice to follow up another Ridley Scott Alien film with another Cameron Alien film. (this paragraph is mostly to tease... icon_razz.gif)

just so long as he/they doesn't call it ALIEN5.

Man, I would love for Cameron to do another Alien film and redeem the franchise after the scum that is Alien 3 and Resurrection.

As for Prometheus, prequel or not, I'm excited.

Cameron needs to not touch any existing IP other than his own so he can keep his terribly written two dimension characters and cheesy blockbuster nonsense there.

Alien >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Aliens

This is a scientific fact. I know. I did tests and stuff.
