I still would have prefered them to finish Half Life 2 eps and then have a flow blown sequel.

The general consensus is that Episode 3/Half-Life 3 has essentially become one big game. Too big in scope to be classed as an episode, but still a direct follow-up to Episode 2. I mean, it's really just the name.
In slightly related news, OXM is claiming they've heard word from a voice actor that apparently just recorded voice work for 'Half-Life 2: Episode 3'.

I think its nothing more than Gabe playing this person for giggles. Why respond to something like THAT with any kind of legitimacy? Why not to the undoubtably thousands of people who've emailed him asking in a coherant way? Also would they even know for sure what they are showing off at E3 2012 yet? It's over 6 months away.
The reply email could easily be photoshopped too by anyone since its just text on a white screen.. So lets not get too excited lol
But it still gave me a little twinge of excitement anyway <3

Simple solution (and pretty probable) Gabe is a channer. I mean the design for the anouncer in TF 2 came from a drawfag on 4chan I'm pretty sure.

They would know if they are working on it now and probbably have some rough idea of that they want to show something from it but wouldn't know exactly what segment of the game or how the trailer will be cut or anything.

Because among the thousands and thousands of "WHEN IS HL3 COMING" emails that he gets, he gets one which is completely out of the blue and random and potentially homicidal. Gabe responds to a LOT of his emails (he answered one of my ones a long time ago, wasn't even a question), so I'm really quite sure that's not a photoshop.
As for what's planned for E3, you'd be surprised how much planning devs can go into with that stuff. They set a deadline to get stable and optimised game code and it can take months to get it right to where they want it to be for something like E3. I know Uncharted 2's first showing at E3 took something like 3-5 months of hardcore work to get up to scratch. Was worth it though.
I reckon there will be something revealed/shown in 2012, as it tends to fit within the timeline of HL announcements, and HL3 will be a 2013 release (HL1 has a 6 year gap from HL2, Ep2 has a 6 year gap from HL3 etc).

I already knew he responded to emails a lot, but I'm saying it would really easy for someone to whip up a shop of him saying anything at all. It just seems unlikely to me he would choose *that* email to respond to and give the first hint of a new game, its the kind of email you take one look at, think what the hell, and delete. It wasn't even funny really. Not worth a legitimate reply. So if he really did write that reply I think we should take it with a pinch of salt, maybe he wasn't serious

Surely Valve Time would indicate that they know exactly what they're showing, and in fact thought E3 was this month but got it mixed up with christmas?

Isnt that referring the HEV suit... HL1 was mark 4 and HL2 (and episodes) were mark 5, so where did Mark 6 go?
Also in the legal stuff at the bottom theres a gap inbetween "Aperture Science logo", and "Source" which is two spaces not one.... Silly point and easily missed? Yes, but Valve are very meticulous!
I nearly did a wee when I clicked on the site but I'm skeptical about that site because again it could be made by anyone lol
But with all the stuff coming out lately hinting at HL3 it really is looking promising that we will see some information on it soon

Moar crap.
First off, Steamcast has twittered that "Go ahead given by Gabe to start dropping hints relating to the next Half Life game #Official #Valve". Ruh roh.
Second, the Team Fortress 2 Australian Christmas is all going on and stuff. This post on the blog asked "What is the true meaning of Australian Christmas?". It has a lovely picture of the Engineer. But it didn't always. Originally it had a starry image, which was taken down. It's still, for some reason, hosted by the Valve servers though. Looky looky.
Looks kind of like an Aurora Borealis, no?
Lastly there's some good old fashioned reaching like Half-Life fans always do. A happy snap from the latest TF2 Australian Christmas comic.
