Just got back from a screening of 'Gantz: Perfect Answer' from the Japanese Film Festival thats on in Melbourne at the moment.
For the uninitiated, Gantz is based on a manga, about the recently deceased being resurrected to combat 'aliens' living on earth, They are armed with advanced weaponry and special suits that both protect them and amplify their muscles. Survive the battle, you earn points, with the goal being to reach 100.
**** Possible Spoilers Follow ****
As a fan of the manga, The story here is a bit of a mess. They seemingly combine characters (Freaking Izumi/Reika BS) and mish-mash story arcs. And it never flows naturally. Some of these changes would be fine, if they didn't try to jam in events that occur in the manga into place still. And one of the more impressive features from the first film, seeing the alien's on the big screen, is diminished by exclusively using the Vampires/MIB in the battles. It could have been more interesting i think it might have been more interesting if they'd used the "Chibi" alien in its place. But i can't deny that some of the action scenes were cool, especially the subway rumble.
For all my complaining, I enjoyed the film for the most part. Gets a little bit long, but the Last hour it starts to dip. But worth a look in if your after some action. _________________

I watched Brick this weeend. It's a movie that is a few years old starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt's. First off anyone who liked LA Noire will like this movie. Stealing from the same stuff. I really liked it. It sometimes comes off a student production but if you can get over the fact that these are teens playing these roles it's a pretty good movie.

One Eyed Monster
Ok I mentioned this ages back, the movie about Ron Jeremy's possesed penis killing the actors of a porno.
It's... a lot better then I was expecting.
I mean don't get me wrong it's deffintly B-grade, but given the subject matter I was expecting like... z grade. The acting was a lot better then I expected (Also surprising was the fact that Tera from Buffy is in it as the make up artist that is in love with Ron Jerremy.)
Also kind of surprising is that it's basically a giant jaws hommage (Or if you want rip off) right down to the 'expert posessed alien cock hunter" showing up and telling a 15 minute story about the time he fought a possesed alien cock previously and the massacre it caused.
Basically I had really low expectations for this movie and was pleasently surprised when it's actually pretty decent... in a watching it after 10 drinks kind of way. _________________

I liked 70% of this movie and then I got bored. I just didn't get the point. I dunno, it was well made, the action was frenetic, the soundtrack was amazing and it had a few good touches narrative wise it just didn't gel with me. I thought the fairytale aspect was just a cheap shortcut to an actual interesting narrative. There are so many child assassins movies that work so much better.

The Yellow Sea
Holy shit the action scenes in this movie were edge of your seat intense. The first half of the movie was superb but then it began to follow too many characters and I found it a little hard to keep up. This wasn't quite as good The Chaser but it definitely comes close. 9/10

The Chronicles of Riddick
This movie is good, I mean it's bad in many ways but at the same time it's really entertaining. I found myself wanting to know the rest of the story after watching it. It has a really strong Gears of War feel to it, they throw you right into the story and things just happen but it's hard to know the motifs of any side or character.
Also some pretty neat action which isn't over the top or plaguing the entire movie unlike many other action movies. I do recommend this movie, plus you don't have to watch the first one (I still haven't seen it). It's also a movie that I think I could watch over and over and not get sick of.
From me it gets a 7/10

Chronicles of Riddick was worth it for Judy Dench. I have an unhealthy love for that woman. _________________

Taken
Loved this movie from beginning to end. I also love Liam Neeson, so it was a combination of "I will fuck everything up" and Qui-Gon-Jin that made it butt clenchingly intense.
Also holy shit at the brutality of Mills' takedowns. The 'fury of my fist' levels go from a "wow that was heavy" to "HOLY FUCK HE JUST DESTROYED THAT GUY" by the end.
Awesome entertainment. _________________

Taken is a top movie , i had to watch it on dvd when i saw it was going to be on Channel 10.
Doesn't go out and try to be the best movie in the planet, but it still delivers solid entertainment.

Yeah that was one of the best scenes imo. Also loved the part where he finally finds Marko from the phone and is all "I told you I'd find you". Guys face was full of fuck _________________

Memories of Matsuko
Wow, just wow. I'm not a fan of musicals but I loved this. I've never seen such amazing direction and cinematography in a film like this before. It was such a vibrant and surreal experience even though the subject matter was quite serious. It left me feeling a bit depressed but it was so worth and it's not a movie I'm going to forget anytime soon.

Trailer for [Rec] 3: Genesis (video doesn't contain subtitles). Apparently it takes place just miles from the location of the first two films, and their storylines are connected.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Saw this at a free advance screening last night. It's a Mission Impossible movie, except with more Simon Pegg this time. I swear I remember the first (and maybe even the second) movie having more twists and stuff. This one is just your average "save the world" story. It was cool for free though. _________________

Must be going through a Gosling phase...
Drive (2011)
Gosling leads a talented cast through a typical noir thriller romp. It's a good film and gets everything right but it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. What did stand out about this movie to me was the soundtrack. So 80's, so French I loved it.
A lot is being made of Gosling's performance, but Brooks was the star here for me.
Crazy Stupid Love (2011)
I never thought I'd give a ensemble romantic comedy a chance but this film made me glad I did. I watched through the entire thing and while I found the last 3rd to kind of drag on I got caught up in the fun of it, especially the twists which just came as a total surprise to me as I didn't think this would be the type of film but it added to my overall enjoyment.
The only other criticism I could make was the son character. I get why he was in there BUT his scenes were really kind of creepy and I don't like how his story concludes. _________________

I love Albert Brooks, I was really glad when I saw he was one of the main characters in Drive (I haven't watched it yet). Apparently there is rumours of him getting some nominations, hopefully he gets some more films from this.
I totally agree with everything you said about CSL. The main romantic plot points were fine enough, the sub-plot with the son brought the film down a bit and even the ending of that plot ends weirdly, and gives off a bad message :S _________________

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
It was good in the sense that it didn't try to be anything other than it was, a pure action movie with next to no plot or character development. In that way I really enjoyed it, and there were a few impressive moments that I couldn't figure out how they shot.
Overall it was probably the best in the series for me personally in terms of enjoyment, then again I didn't see any of the others in a Cinema. Anyway it was a free advanced screening and I probably would have waited for DVD if that didn't come up but in hindsight its worth seeing if you just want a mindless action movie. _________________

Warrior was good. Some of the fighting was a little overly-spectacular though, and the end was just ridiculous. As if a doctor wouldn't have been called in.
Red Dog is my new favourite Australian film. 5/5 for me.

Saw Tin Tin. Kind of makes Uncharted look like a cheap imitation of what movies can do. Odd for a movie to have no female characters though.

Less so when you consider they were originally written in like the 1930's. Any female character would have had to be completely shoehorned in and it would have been weird.
Also seriously, best movie I've seen this year. _________________
