Another bit that bugged the hell out of me was you get the choice to kill or save the little sisters, and killing the little sisters pisses off that scientists chick, so when you get taken out... she saves you and leaves you in a room with all the little sisters?.

I haven't done an evil playthrough yet, but yeah that does kinda suck. I guess the motivation for Tenebaum there is that she sees you as the lesser of two evils, so by helping you free yourself of the mind control and have you take down Fontaine it will work out better for her. I'll admit that is a pretty shitty explanation though.

I also agree with the fact that while there numerous ways to take down Big Daddy's, once you realise they will go down after six or seven explosive buck shots to the head it really does render everything else useless.

I don't know. I can see where you are coming from and there are definitely things that hold back BioShock from being a truly amazing game, but I still wouldn't call it lazily designed. The story was average and did kind of fall apart towards the end, and there is a few gameplay elements that just flat out suck, but it's still an amazingly atmospheric world that is so much fun to explore.

Credits rolling on Trine 2

Awesome game, it had some puzzles that really required a lot of thought and experimentation, and rewarded you sensibly for the orbs you went out of your way to collect, that is, to fully upgrade every character's traits, you must collect all of the orbs by game's end.

Awesome use of light and colour, the fluid dynamics brought quite a bit of new gameplay, and the characters were charming as ever.

It's a real feel good title, well worth the $15, and worthy of a position in my top 5 for the year.

See that might make sense, but she literally leaves you alone in a room full of like 20 little sisters completly unsupervised. You know, even though I'd been murdering them on sight.

See I'll completly agree that the world is amazing atmospheric and well designed that shit is pretty much unmatched. But it feels like that's the only effort that went inot the game to me. Everything else was just kind of thrown together,

I mean hell, instead of thinking up a bad guy they just gender swapped Ann Ryan. For the twist they just took the twist directly from system shock 2. For the hacking game they just stole Pipe Mania.

Everything apart from the art direction is just a lazy mishmash of other peoples ideas.

I don't know, I mean I'm not trying tot ake away that you enjoyed it, that's rad that you had fun with it and all. I just really fucking disliked it icon_razz.gif

Bioshock fell apart for me after the twist. Great setup, the payoff was great but I didn't care about the aftermath.

I think the reason why it is so loved is few games tackle these ideas, the twist is particularly suited to video games on a few different levels and when it came out it was the best looking game for a while.

FUCK YEAH!!! Finally finished Super Mario Bros 3 (All-Stars version)!!! Not gonna lie, even the very first world gave me some trouble, but I hung in there despite what seemed like hundreds of game overs, and eventually got Bowser to stomp his way down into the bottomless pit. It was a great feeling when the credits started rolling and you see all the worlds you've conquered icon_biggrin.gif

inFamous - PS3

A game that I initially don't care (I seem to make a habit of this) but then when I saw my partner playing it, I didn't mind playing it for myself and was totally hooked. If my memory serves me correctly, it was similar to Crackdown but with a moral system.

I went down the Good Path and not sure about others but wow the ending was totally unexpected for me (I left satisfying). Curious as to how the Evil Path goes but then I feel like getting inFamous 2 and I got a huge backlog to get through.

Took a while to get a hang of jumping around and grabbing onto the power lines (hint: don't thrust and try to grab onto a powerline, need to be free-falling for the character to grab) but it feels so good every time I manage to freely move between powerlines. I feel bad not paying a cent for this.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary (PC)

Well i've played this before but it is in my opinion the best example currently around of how to do a remake properly. It takes an old game and not only slaps some new graphics on but also completely rebuilds it and improves on it, rather than just pandering to the fans wearing their rose tinted glasses it actually brings a classic game into relevance again by making the gameplay more streamlined and adding new features. It's not dumbed down in any way, its just that now the controls actually work and feel fluent, and the levels and puzzles are huge, vast and complex without being frustrating. (I did use youtube to solve some of the puzzles though)

I would LOVE more remakes like this! Making now-unplayable games playable again while keeping to their tone and style? Yes please. Why can't we have more of these? I know in a way it kind of goes against innovation, but its not like many games strive for that anyway.

Thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm having difficulty finding any faults with it for what it sets out to do. Possibly the best game remake ever. If anyone hasn't played this and likes other explory-climby-shooty kind of gameplay, such as, oh lets sayy Uncharted, play this, because to be honest, its better, and Uncharted is overrated. icon_razz.gif

Hey Jarrod I like Lara for her personality. She has a great pair of personalities. ^_^

Also being a posh british gal myself I relate to her icon_razz.gif

but in all seriousness she might be a sex symbol and not the greatest example of females portrayed in video games but at least shes distinctive and not irritating. Unlike another action-platformer protagonist I can think of icon_razz.gif

Pix if you liked the puzzles and level layouts in Tomb Raider you might dig some of the Legacy of Kain games then, as they have very open kind of worlds with temples that have multi-layered puzzles (which can also be a LOT harder). Also the voice acting and story is still imo the best in the industry.

Finished Space Marine on PS3 recently. Mindless hacking and slashing at it's best. Few feelings come close to the satisfaction of turning on fury and thunderhammering some chaos marines into oblivion, or assault-packing into a bunch of orks and killing them instantaneously. While the whole 'execute enemies to regain health' was an interesting mechanic the fact it takes a few seconds to execute an enemy and that you can be damaged during this time was something I didn't like. I died quite a few times from this, executing an enemy while on low health and being killed from other enemies shooting me. Of course, realistically that's how it should be but I didn't like it all that much.

The pacing and introduction to new weapons was very good, just as soon as you were starting to get bored of something, a new weapon or ability was introduced. I was slightly disappointed that the game didn't incorparate any vehicles which I was quite looking forward to after I acquired the meltagun. The whole jump pack mechanic felt a little clumsy to me though, the movements were very static and pre-determined. The fact that to go up you first have to go a small distance forward annoyed me, it should be straight up. Saying that though, the portions where you had an assault pack and thunderhammer were amongst some of the most enjoyable I've had in a video game in some time. That coupled with fury and the superhuman nature of Space Marines enabled you to just mow down hordes of xenos foes.

Another thing I was impressed by was the lack of cringe worthy moments, the dialogue and interactions were more than acceptable unlike the Ultramarines movie which has a similar plot to this. All in all I quite enjoyed it and am looking forward to a sequel.

Tomb Raider: Legend

I just skimmed through it, skipped a few levels and such, but same as Anniversary I'd played it before.

To quickly recap:

Zip & Alistair I found to be annoying characters. Lara doesn't look very lifelike, she looks more like a plastic doll and shes way too sexualized. Bugs and issues on the PC that make some sections not work if you have "Next Gen" content enabled (such as the Kazakhstan level). Aiming is bad with the lock-on being very sensitive to movement and innacurate when you're trying to switch between locks (I'm using a gamepad). The camera has an obnoxious habit of fixating on Lara's body rather than taking up a useful position. Too much focus on action rather than puzzle solving and exploration (punctuated further by the bad aiming). A lot of the levels are boring. Anniversary is better by a multitude.

Wait, I'm trying to work out why I played this again... o_O

Oh yeah, other than that its okay, runny-jumpy-climby stuff works well enough and I really like runny-jumpy-climby stuff <3

Assassin's Creed II

Finally finished this game, and I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with it.

Pros!

-The story or more where it's leading to. While it's most likely heading into the OTT, convoluted and somewhat ridiculous conspiracy theory territory, it actually poses a lot of interesting questions and some of its qualities remind me of a lesser version of the Legacy of Kain games, which I adored. It's interesting, especially the sci fi elements and Desmonds' side.

-General design is awesome. They've captured renaissance Italy incredibly well and it looks quite gorgeous because of it. The cities feel very alive.

-Some assassination missions are spectacular in execution and setup. There are some really good scenarios that worked super well and showed off the game at its best.

-The music is so good, especially the ending theme.

-More variety than the first, so it sometimes manages to feel a bit more diverse and not repetitive.

-Eyefinity out of the box, so my HUD was centred and it scaled perfectly. One of the best titles for it as it works really well.

Annnd cons.

-The combat is terrible. Button mashing can literally win you entire fights, and the general pacing of it is super slow and really boring. Enemies surround you ready to pounce but hardly ever attack and it makes it feel like a giant chore.

-AI is also terrible. I don't think I've seen AI as spastic as this, as it tends to do random things and not notice you a good amount of the time you're doing something shifty. Companion AI is also really bad and I've had moments where entire groups I've hired have died by just following me.

-Pathfinding in the parkour is solid for the most part, but there are moments where the freerun mechanic and colision tends to go crazy and spazes out or drops you off ledges. I've had this happen numerous times without even doing anything, and it's frustrating as it completely breaks the flow.

-A lot of missions were utterly pointless and boring. Some of the ones involving following someone could've been done in a cutscene and were really there to just extend the length of the game for no good reason considering it's already pretty long. Also, way too many fetch quests and arse kissing missions. Get me straight to the good parts, don't lead me on with shit.

-Visuals just weren't cutting it, because the LOD was horrible. While it can look REALLY good with Eyefinity, and architecture in the game is pretty good, player models are horrid, animation is so-so and it just genuinely looks pretty poor, particularly in shadows. Took no advantage of PC hardware either.

-The game likes to artificially lengthen itself for no good reason. Just as you feel like the game is about to end, you have to do a bunch of useless fetch quests to get to the next area. It could've flowed a lot better without all the crappy filler stuff in between. Also I sadly had the DLC auto applied and unskippable in my game (came with the purchase afaik), so I went through like 3 hours of sub-standard DLC to get to the last memory..which then pulled a collection quest on me before I can get to the final area. Stupid.

Overall:

It's great when it works, fucking dreadful when it doesn't. Ubisoft have a lot of good qualities and mechanics in place but they also make a lot of really stupid decisions that hinder the experience significantly and make it feel like a chore. The story is interesting and I'd like to continue it, but I hope to Odin that they've sorted a lot of the shitty gameplay problems and structure in missions they had in this game because I seriously struggle to tolerate them.

TL;DR, game's alright but has some terribad missions and issues that knock it way away from being AAA.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

SO much better than AC2. I was actually surprised how much of an improvement this is, as the sloppiness is all but gone and several new features make it really excellent.

Pros:

-Music once again rocks.

-Visually outstanding on PC. Utilises a lot of your hardware very well and scales well too. Excellent texture work, great animation and models are much better this time around. Rome looks amazing, and Eyefinity ready as always is a gigantic plus.

-Story is getting more and more interesting, though cliffhangers kinda suck.

-The combat has been refined along with enemy AI, which actually fights back now, making it a lot more enjoyable. The killstreak idea is very cool, and though the combat can be laughably easy, it's still quite enjoyable particularly because of the insane slaughter you can pull off.

-Assassin Guild addition is fucking fantastic. I spent hours playing with it and grew quite attached to some of my recruits. And them raping someone out of nowhere from just a whistle never really gets old.

-Pacing and mission structure is much, MUCH better than AC2. Most missions had a good point and strong gameplay mechanics and design behind it, and there was no part which felt shoddy and uninteresting.

-The variety this time around works very well, largely thanks to the pacing and mission structure.

Cons:

-The missions are noticeably a little more linear in progression, which tends to defeat the purpose of having the freedom to approach situations. That being said, it's minimal.

-AI can still be a bit stupid at points, albeit it's a rare occurence.

-Cliffhangers.

-Pathfinding is almost perfect. Very small amount of weird moments where Ezio wouldn't do what I intended him to do with the free running, but for the most part it wasn't an issue.

Overall:

What AC2 should've been. Enormous improvement from the first and second combined. Very polished, tightly designed and is exactly what you'd expect out of an Assassin's Creed game. I'm back on the bandwagon now with this series. Now onto Revelations!

4.5 out of 5

I've done some of the glyphs, but I'll probably take your advice and hunt all of them down.

The reveal for getting all the glyphs kicks the shit out of the one in AC 2. It also sets up a major point in Revelations.

I cruised through most of them with a walkthrough though cause fuck me some of them are hard.
