So I'm still waiting for my copy of Skyward Sword to arrive from ozgameshop. Thing is, mario land 3d shipped a day later than Zelda and it arrived on Monday. It's almost past the 'up to 12 working days' stipulation.
God I hope it's not lost.

My copy has arrived! I've a couple of hours in (have obtained shield and sword) - accepting the wii limtitations I'm liking the graphical style.

I also take back anything I may have said about voice concerns. The music and tone of "voices" that are used are more than enough to convey the emotions of the moment, and if i was sitting though talking heads I'd proberbly be bored and inclinded to just want to skip the cut scenes. As things are I was smiling at Links awkwardness and booing his bullies hair stylings just fine.

The controls are still wii-centric. Not uncomfortable, but I woludn't miss a gamepad scheme option. I've yet to find a free camera option which would be my only genuine grievence.

So far, its Zelda. For better or worse. I've lamented the lack of innovation in this years sequelitis session elsewhere so I won't complain here. Besides, its really too early in the game to complain yet. To its credit, the introduction has drawn me into the world this time around with genuine affection for the characters and their relationships. This is a pleasent thing given how much I just wanted to move out of the village and get on with things in twilight princess.

I can already see Fi becoming annoying, as most of Links compainions can be. They have mapped a "call" button to the d-pad, I wish they would leave her their unless its pressed. Still, could be worse:

"New copies of Link's next adventure will come with a one-time use code to unlock Navi. Lest you think you can keep the fairy silent by not activating the code, refusing to enter it will result in Navi stopping you every few minutes with the following message: "Hey! Don't forget to input your code to unlock my helpful hints and tips!" http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/11/29/the-terrifying-future-of-online-pass-codes.aspx "

My TV has large black borders around the game. Other wii games all look fine. Is this a common issue? I can't recall it being mentioned in my travels. How do I make it "full screen"?

EDIT: solved.......

I like to pretend this is my review score for Skyward Sword (in a very, very roundabout way).

I'm only up to the Earth temple but I'm enjoying it more than Twilight Princess.

It does a better job of motivating me to be emotionally invested and I like some of the original characters introduced to the series.

It also feels different and while combat lacks any significant challenge some of the puzzles leave me scratching my head.

Yeah with a wii-mote, game would have been fine without it. (Though I still would have hated Fi)

Really? I've not played it myself (waiting until I get back to Victoria), but from what I've heard, this game is one of the first to really nail motion controls. What have you got against them, Mr. The-waggle-in-Galaxy-completely-ruined-the-experience? Do you have a bad wrist?

It's the illusion of 1:1 motion controls. Link only attacks in the cardinal and intermediate directions, and you can waggle your way to victory, as the game will interpret it as Link swinging his sword in a combo. Even with enemies blocking in different directions, the likelyhood you will be able to hit at a place where an enemy is exposed is extremely high if you spastically wave the remote around.

Even then, you'll realise that the jump/spin attack auto wins most battles for you, and you won't have to fight the "correct" way.

Red Steel 2 did a better and more accurate job of motion controls, both in swordplay and aiming. At least Red Steel 2 could detect if your swings were slow or fast, but in Skyward Sword, as long as you hit that piece of code that recognises the movement as an attack, Link will have the same swing speed regardless.

They nailed the swordplay and shield but the harp not so much (it's pretty rubbish) and to a lesser degree swimming/bird (is fine just a bit forced at times). If I could turn off the motion controls for the bird/swimming I'd be pretty happy (harp is a good idea but there is something really off with it).

The real problem I only have with the controls is having to be *on* all the time. You can't really relax while playing the game so much.

so far i'm on my way to finding a sacred flame in its first dungeon, but I'm reAlly finding the controls themselves are taking away from the sense of story/adventure/enviroment... like i sometimes i have to stop and think about what button i'm pressing just to use the right item/equipment

just feeling the remote controls aren't as intuitive and a gamepad would be, where you'd get used to it quicker and just naturally press things so you'd get lost into the game itself

I have no real beef with the motion controls, I think they do the job pretty well, even if you don't have 1:1 movement. The only issue I have is when it comes to performing the thrust movement, the game doesn't seem to recognise it very well. The amount of trouble I ended up having with the third boss was just silly.

Buh? It's 1:1. The only difference between it and Red Steel 2 is as you noted; there's no gauge of strength (which I loved in RS2, by the way), but otherwise the directional movements and Link's sword positioning are 1:1. Just because you can waggle to victory doesn't mean they're not.

The only things I dislike about the motion sword play are. as admeister said, the thrust, which feels pretty laggy and awkward to do, and the over sensitivity. I would prefer it more like Red Steel 2 where you make large, heavy sweeping movements to attack. It would require more energy, but it would prevent some of the over responsiveness that I've run into. Like trying to change stance left to right sometimes registers an attack for me, because of how sensitive it is.

Otherwise I didn't have any problems with the controls in the slightest. At best I thought they were wonderful and would love it if Zelda Wii U made sure to include them over touch pad gimmicks.

This. I've had that happen a little too often for comfort. It's a shame, since the motion controls work really well the rest of the time. I guess even Nintendo couldn't quite get the controls perfect, but they did a great job all things considered.

Apologies then. It was just that the enemies were extremely lenient/explicit in the way they blocked (it was either the cardinals or diagonally blocking), so it felt like it didn't matter regardless if the controls are 1:1.

I feel that if they implemented the swing speed ala RS2, the tactical nature of the swordplay would be a lot better. Unfortunately, aside from bosses such as that Scorpion, there really is no incentive to swing properly, which is my gripe with the controls. That and if your remote wasn't centered when you pull out any aiming device, it would go completely out of whack.

I can't evne recall if RS2 had this problem with aiming calibration.

The aiming issue is because, for whatever reason, Skyward Sword doesn't use the pointer for any aiming. It's all motion controlled. Red Steel 2 on the other hand uses the actual pointer, so it's always calibrated correctly.

I didn't find the Ancient Cistern that great either. The 5th dungeon however, rocked my socks because it didn't feel like a dungeon. That and it had a wonderfully dynamic boss (even if it was incredibly easy).

It's defintly not 1-1. There are 8 pre canned directional slashes you can activate by waggling in the right direction.

Down to up, down.right to up left, right to left, up right to down left, up to down, up left to down right, left to right, down left to up right.

+ thrust, spin attack and jumping slash.

Those kind of controls could have just as easily been implemented by putting the sword attack on a left trigger and using the right joystick for the direction of the attack.

If it was 1-1 controls for the sword fighting I should be able to do low slashes across there legs when they're blocking there torso, I should be able to thrust at there head to get around there blocks. I also wouldn't be able to sit back on my couch and play the game with a casual flick of my wrist.

The 1-1 only takes place when you're not attacking, which still feels kind of dodgy. Doing those eyeball things that you have to confuse with your sword. I had a hell of a time getting them to recognise my flailing about as being in a proper circle. It also suffers from and I can't understate this enough. Make link look like a complete fucking spastic.

My girlfriend was watching me play and wanted to know why he's being dragged around by a magic sword.
And that's exactly what it looks like, link is reacting to the movment of the sword and not causing them and it looks really bad.
