Its been quite an experience building my first comp, there were alot of emotions involved.
But it was all worth it playing Skyrim on Ultra in 3D.

Trust me it's a lot easier than it used to be. Now you pretty much slap everything together in the only place it fits. No worrying about drive/mobo jumper settings, which way around the ribbon cables are and crap like that =P _________________

Grim's right, nowadays PC building is easymode. The old school stuff was a terrifying ordeal when it came to the jumpers. Master/Slave urghbadgjlaghf.
Also, welcome to the Master Race. And if you want some mods for Skyrim, hit me up and I'll fire off about 50 recommendations to get it looking even prettier. _________________

Plug-and-play made PCs too easy.

Nevermind that now cases are all smooth, rolled metal. None of this razor sharp pressed steel to cut your arms to ribbons!
Back in my day we had to grow trees to make poles and beans to thread onto them. We called it an Abacus. And we LIKED it!

I genuinely didn't know that, learn something new every day!
It makes sense to a degree, especially on my older HP Pavilion pc's where the OS was either supplied on a HP Recovery CD (Windows 98) or on a recovery partition of the hdd. Niether were able to be used on other pc's as a result. I did buy my own copy of XP a few years later when the hdd of my second Pavilion pc bit the dust.
I'm planning on upgrading my ram from 6 to 12 or above at some point in the future. I don't "need" it as such, i just want piece of mind. Unless the computer blows up, i intend on keeping it for at least 5 years (already clocked up year 1 - Today ).
I'll also look at a new video card in due time. I am happy with the GTX 460, but would love the security of being able to ALWAYS play games on the highest graphical settings without loss of performance. In doing so i might need to look at upgrading the power supply "just in case". I'd need to find out how much my current setup uses first.

There will always be a loss of performance, a more noticeable one on newer titles especially. _________________

If your motherboard supports it, you could pick up another 460 dirt cheap. I have dual 460s and can play just about everything close to max. _________________ Shin J Leon.

The motherboard is sli ready, the sticking point could be the power supply (Antec TruePower 650w) it does say it is sli certified..... but with all of the other bells and whistles i have connected (2x dvd burner/blu-ray roms, 2x hdd's etc) i might be pushing it as it is.
The real stumbling block is the case, it's cramped enough as it is.... while the motherboard has the slots available. Throwing in a second graphics card would mean i'd have to ditch my video capture card.... nothing is ever easy

Yeah power will be a problem but the 460s are awesome on heat compared with say the 480s. They really run nicely in SLI though could be a cheaper option for you if you play your cards right. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Hey guys, just a quick bit of advice. Would I be best off waiting for the 7xxx series to be released before upgrading, or should I just jump right in and purchase a HD 6950, which has recently captured my interest? _________________

Latest ETA is January for the 7xxx cards and the high end ones might not be released until later. They won't be cheap and high demand will mean higher prices. The 6950 is a great and cheap mid-high end card that's definitely worth the money.

Does that mean they've STILL not turned up? Man I'd be ringing that supplier/shipping company asking for minute to minute updates _________________

Must be professionals who want it so bad considering its threading capabilities. Would be really good for 3D rendering and other things similar to that. _________________

It is the beastlord of CPUs at the moment.
Strangely enough, I could actually find a use for all of them there cores with my current job. _________________

Definitely the most powerful CPU, but not practical for a person going for pure gaming considering that only two game use more than four threads on PC.
I'd personally love it for rendering. _________________

I give up saving for a 7950/70 build, I spend too much money. Thinking about buying a lower spec PC, and then upgrading the CPU and GPU in 6-12 months, how is this build? Though the 7850 might be out by the time I build it, so it might be even better than I plan.
CPU: i3 2100 – 125
Motherboard: AsRock Z68 Pro3 – 109
RAM: 8G 1600 G.Skill Ripjaws-X – 52
Graphics: 6850 – 150
HDD: Seagate SATA3 1T – 149
Case: $50-$100
PSU: Antec NeoEco 520 – 67

Looks pretty solid for a budget gaming build. If you can stretch the budget then a quad core would benefit as more games take advantage of it and there wouldn't be a need to upgrade too soon. You could go with a quad core AMD CPU rather than the dual core Intel and it will cost the same.

Yeah, I looked at a gaming comparison and the i5 2500 actually runs games a fair bit better than the i3 2100, up to 30 FPS in some games. I might go for that instead, then the only thing that'll need upgrading is my GPU at some point.
