I honestly had no trouble with the way the movies looked. They looked like a cel-shaded video game, and, given that Appleseed may as well be a video game anyway, I can live with that.

If you like that style, there's a 2-episode OAV series called TO that's worth checking out. It's based on a manga called 2001 Nights, which is itself a tribute to classic "hard" sci-fi from the 1950s and 1960s.

Benza wrote:

I liked the original Appleseed, but the second one is a much tighter film overall. It's Shirow, though, so you're always going to get those slow philosophical bits.

Also didn't Oakenfold do the first one too? Or was it just his song in the trailer?

There's an Oaky song on the regular OST, but the arrange OST is someone else, iirc.

See a feature length pre-renderd movie shouldn't look like a video game.

Stuff like this

the shadows just look lumpy and misformed and doesn't really give you a good sense of what should be going on in a 3D space.

Bad cel shading pisses me off more then most things for the simple reason of fucking why? You want to do a 3D movie that's cool, do a 3D movie then, don't try and make it look 2D. Their are literally limitless possiblities of what you can make a 3D animated movie look like, from photo realisim to painterly surrealisim to fucking anything. I mean if they wanted the characters to look 2D, why not fucking draw them What is the point of the cel shading? The movie would have looked far far better if it was done entirley in the rendering style used on the background.

No not that. Look at the actual shape of the shadow on... main characters face. it's like a wavy pattern down her chin instead of a smooth curved line like you'd expect. Or take a look at the shadow on the top of black haired chicks shoulder. Instead of a smooth curve it has corners.

It completely throws off the entire point, I mean try and imagine what shape her head would be considering the light source to cast that shadow on her chin? It makes everything in the movie look weird and distorted and just not right, and again would have been saved if they'd just dropped cel shading all together. The movie looks worse then it could of.

And it pisses me off.

I just don't get how Japan can have some of the most amazing 3D animators making their games and pre-renderd cut scenes. But then it comes time to make a 3D animated movie and we get... that?

I mean shit look at FF X's pre-renderd cutscenes compared to that and 10 came out 3 years before it? That shit doesn't make any fucking sense.

Honestly that's just a taste thing, I find a lot of Shirows stuff just mind numbingly dull... except for that weird porno where the cowgirl chick got fucked by giant horse men... that was kind of awesome.

Never even heard of it, I gave up on anime a while ago (You can partially blame stormo for that, he banned me from the anime forum I used to go to) A combination of the escelation of fucking Moe shows, bland art styles reigning supreme and stilted character dialouge just all started to run together and turn me off pretty much everything... that and realising I can buy a full series of a live action tv show for like a quater of the price of an anime one (since they hadn't started doing slim packs yet, seriously 90 bucks for FLCL was fucking absurd)

Though I did look up a trailer for Sky Blue and it looks pretty gorgeous, doesn't really look like my cup of tea sorry.

I was wowed by the visuals in Appleseed when it was released. Probably doesn't hold up too well by today's standards though.

I just discovered that the Steins;Gate visual novel (along with some other 5pb games) is available to buy on the Australian Apple App store! It's still in Japanese, but totally on offer. I'm really surprised!

Yeah I bought the Stein's Gate app for my iphone back in August of this year. It's not bad, a little small for the screen size but it can get little difficult to get into the flow of the story. By that I mean you really need to sit down play and follow story as opposed to start, stop, start, stop with it being on a portable device.

I guess it worked well for the PSP version, since that's similar but it feels different playing it on your phone. Especially when you're reading a good part of the story and then you get an incoming call or text.

Just learn to read Japanese and you're set. icon_nn.gif

Tempted to run out and grab a $50 iTunes card for Steins Gate (even though I do know hiragana and katakana, kanji might be a problem)

On another note, finished watching Gundam Unicorn OVA 4 and damn it's like a Mobile Suit museum

Show us your top 10 icon_smile.gif.

I like Steins;Gate but not quite enough to make my top 10 favorites. I still give it a solid 9/10 though.

Well if you don't mind figma

(source ref:amazon link on image)

I enjoy Kurisu Makise's character and Steins;Gate. But being weak to tsundere characters, Hitagi Senjougahara and Bakemonogatari tops mine icon_razz.gif

Towards the Terra 2008 version is still #1 for me. No one I know has seen it though >_>

I don't buy figmas anymore they are just so easy to break. Broke my Shana arm just by trying to get it in and my Hayate from Nanoha StrikerS's staff broke when my bookshelf collapsed :/

You gets what you pays for, really.

Using that cel-shaded technique (which a fair few anime shows did at the time, see also Platonic Chain) means you don't have to make hyper-detailed skin and facial textures, and can get away with more shortcuts. This cuts down on rendering time, which reduces the overall production costs.

Basically, if Appleseed had the budget of a video game, it would look like the kind of cutscene you're talking about (or, perhaps more relevantly, like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within). Appleseed didn't have that budget, and it was clearly decided that this cel-shaded approach was the best way to make the movie.

I honestly don't think it detracts from the film at all, though. The sequel is a much better animated film, however (it's also just generally a better movie).

I agree with you (shock!) that "moe" is the cancer that's killing anime, though. I can even name the show that started the downhill trend.

Can't be those. K-ON was either late 2008 or 2009, and KyoAni's first real 'Moe' series was Air TV.
Toei's adaptation of Kanon came out in 2002 which predates Air TV by about 3 years. Moe characters have always been around, they are just a bit more prevalent than they used to be.
Anyone who says Moe is the downfall of the anime industry is just blowing hot air as far as I'm concerned. In the mid nighties to early 2000's mecha anime was absolutely everywhere yet you probably didn't here Moe and Harem fans whinging incessently.
The way I see it as long as quality series like Stein's;Gate and Fate/Zero keep getting produced I can't really see what the problem is.
