so how will this "new" system be different from the current format and what changes if any will affect its existing user base? _________________

It's too early to discuss anything specific about the proposed new system at this stage. It's an idea (wrapped in an enigma, enclosed in a plan, etc...).
Don't be concerned about changes and differences - my goal is to ensure we can provide the services and functions that users want, and to do it in such a way that the site doesn't need to sit down for a rest after serving a page

So you are working with Roland on this? _________________

Yes.
We started some discussions around the time that message was posted, but I've had a few other things get in the way (family holiday, changing jobs, you know - the little stuff!).

| James Varoutsos wrote: | I'll give a fairly blunt assessment of things and leave it at that. The issue with PALGN being so slow is rather a hardware problem than a software one, the server PALGN runs on onto has 2GB of RAM in it and supports a hefty 70GB site (database + code). So once the RAM becomes full with database cache, it starts to write the cache to the hard disk and read from it. For the less technically minded out there, writing stuff to and from a hard disk is infinitely slower than writing and reading from RAM.
For reasons out of our hands, this isn't something we can really change. We're fully aware of it, and it isn't an issue of money, but we can't make any changes to this at this stage. |
So how many times are we going to describe this elephant? Should we start making impressionistic representations of it? I know, I'll write a sonnet about it!
Why isn't James posting the update (if you can call it that)? _________________

CMS is for the articles, right? Will the forum get an upgrade as well? _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Discosis, have you actually communicated with the other unpaid staff like James who seems to have know the issues for a long time now? Also are you being paid? Your posts read like some soulless PR announcement trying too hard to keep people from getting angry for the bs we've had to put up with. _________________

I'm not saying anything because myself and (and the rest of the staff & admins) know as much about this situation as you do at the moment.

Whoops. Turns out when I get a notification from the forum that someone's replied to the thread, it doesn't send me another one unless I reply again.
A bug in the forum. Who knew?
So let's go back over the last few posts then...
| Island_Wolf wrote: | | To give me a piece of mind that the site is in good hands, what's your technical skills? |
I'm a PHP developer by trade. Over the last 10 years I've worked at Melbourne IT (funny story, I helped launch .biz in a way), Fairfax Media, Globe Shoes and I'm currently working at a particular national broadcaster in Sydney.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but I've worked on sites where thousands of users sign in each hour. I've seen systems under heavy load (and if I'm honest, caused some of it from time to time). This is kind of like Sleepy Hollow in comparison.
| Island_Wolf wrote: | | CMS is for the articles, right? Will the forum get an upgrade as well? |
The CMS is the backend tool that allows the staff to manage the content of the site. How the content is stored and updated will change, and we'll build a new frontend focused on getting that content onto a page as fast as possible. The forum is also a part of the frontend, and we'll be looking at it along the way.
| Puddingfork wrote: | | Your posts read like some soulless PR announcement trying too hard to keep people from getting angry for the bs we've had to put up with. |
Thanks, your post reads like you just want to have a whinge. Maybe you forgot to add "No offence, but" to the front of that sentence. Or maybe you didn't. #justsayin
I'm not getting into he-said/she-said because it doesn't help anyone. We're on page 5 of this thread, I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that we know there are issues.

In what way can you allay concerns that PALGN will continue to be neglected as it has been for over a year now (arguably much longer than that)?
Sure, this is page 5 of a thread started 2 and a half months ago, but if you follow the link below you'll see this issue was raised over 2 years ago and wasn't ever resolved adequately:
http://palgn.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=43942
This isn't even remotely new so future promises should understandably be taken with a grain of salt by us in the general public.
Are you the only one working on resolving the issue? Do you have time to devote to this if you're working at a national broadcaster? Why don't you get others to help with what seems like a massive task (at least that's what it appears to be to someone with no understanding of the technical stuff like me)? I understand James Varoutsos offered assistance quite some time ago but was unable to?
Pudding might have sounded like he was having a whinge, but this is an issue that has plagued the site for years, so to have a completely new user come and tell us "everything will be fine" obviously sounds a bit like PR when we have no idea who you are or why we should put faith in you to deliver what's promised in a prompt manner. _________________

One personal attack and none of Pudding's questions answered. Nice way to endear yourself to the userbase.

But hey, you've already pretty much stated you like selectively replying. Considering my post was the one made after your last post on Sunday and it took you five days to get back in here after the notification. _________________

Well, at least he replied. That's more than I can say for some people. He answered Island_Wolf's questions, so that's something, and as for personal attacks I'm not surprised - Puddingfork was pretty rude to him. _________________

Someone who's not even staff comes in and says the site's going to be fine? Pudding had every right to say what he said. _________________

I can't - you're asking the wrong guy. I'm here to make 0's and 1's move around.

In order, no, and yes (it's a job, not my life).
There is a new server being commissioned (I believe its happening this week), so my job over the next couple of weeks will be to set it up to my satisfaction, then migrate code onto it and make sure it still runs. 0's and 1's.

Jason, we meet at last.
I felt the need to jump back in for a moment because believe it or not, I do care about this place. I wouldn't have spent endless hours writing content for PALGN if I didn't. And while I am well and truly finished and over all the BS, I hate seeing questions unanswered and the community deserves better.
To back up what James said, unless anything extraordinary happened since my departure, none of the staff have any idea who Jason is and have no control over the technical issues. That's all in the hands of Roland and this new jerk who thinks it's ok to get smart with a well respected forum member. Not cool.
Trust me, I've been through the frustration, the unanswered questions, all of it. That's why I left. So when you guys and girls ask a question and the staff don't respond, it's not because they don't want to, it's because the only person with answers is Roland and he can barely pronounce my name, let alone turn on a computer.
Jason, while you do seem to have the capacity to fix PALGN, nobody cares about your resumé, all the members care about is getting feedback and real answers. What I would like to know, is how exactly do you plan on fixing this mountain of a problem without admin access? Let's see if you can find a smart arse answer for that one. Personally, I'd love to get a response from you. But you seem to have a lot in common with Roland, i.e. constantly feeling the need to ignore me.
It's not me that you need to be worried about, it's everyone else. And if you can't provide answers, then I have no idea why you reignited this thread. Either help out the people who made this place so great throughout the years, or fuck off.
To everyone else, hang in there and keep spamming Roland with messages. He has to wake up sooner or later.
Goodbye again.

You might want to let the staff know about that. Surprisingly, they do like to be informed. A crazy thought, eh?
And whaddaya know, my question was ignored. Congratulations on completely missing the point of this whole argument. I hope you and Roland live happily ever after, you two make a great couple. Idiots. _________________
