New shots of the refined Crystarium:

Looks a little confusing. It certainly seem like you can have a lot of tamed monsters at once though, there's a huge list in that second shot!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 - Crystarium, Customizable Monsters, Historia Crux Time Travel System

Crystarium
The monster Crystarium is similar to the playable character Crystarium. However, in the case of the monsters, you don't use use CP (experience) to traverse the Crystarium chart. Instead, you use items, which you buy from shops or earn after winning battle. The abilities that get upgraded will differ depending on the item that you use. When the Crystarium itself rises in level, you'll find that you need rarer items to advance further.

Famitsu also has a look at the playable character Crystarium system as well, although you might have guessed most of the details from the English screenshots that were released earlier in the week. When the Crystarium gets a level up, you'll get to select your choice of bonuses. Examples shown in Famitsu include Auto Ability ATK Bonus Up, Auto Ability BLA Bonus Up, Jammer Role Release , ATB Level Up and Accessory Equipment Ability Up + 20.

Monsters
Famitsu confirms that you can edit not only their physical appearance through vanity accessories like sunglasses, but you can also give them names.

Outside of the Crystarium, monsters can also grow through inheritance. By sacrificing a monster, you can make your other monsters inherit its abilities.

There are four general types of abilities that can be inherited: command ability, auto ability, special/characteristic ability (特性アビリティ) and resistance (耐性). (I've included the Japanese names for some of these as I'm not of their English translations). Command abilities and auto abilities can only be inherited by monsters that have the same role as the monster that's being sacrificed.

The inheriting monster won't just gain the same set of abilities as the parent monster. In the case of inheriting to a different role monster, you may get completely new abilities.

Historia Crux Time Travel System - The fragment (quest) system and the game's world and story
Regarding the Historia Crux system, the magazine shows two types of gates that you'll be able to cross to jump to new eras. Blue colored gates can be unlocked through general Wild OOPArts items. A yellow color means that a gate requires a specific key.

Getting all the fragments may be one of your goals, and it looks like the game does facilitate this. There are a total of 160 fragments. You can see how many you've gotten in the upper left of the Historia Crux screen. When cycling through gates on the Historia Crux screen, you can see how many fragments you've obtained from the corresponding era.

The story and world details this week include some conversation scenes involving Lighting, Serah and Noel (some of these appear to be just Japanese versions of the English screens that were shared earlier in the week). The magazine also introduces a strange building known as "Augustia Tower." This was built by the Academy, the group that was formed to make the people of the world acquire essentials without reliance on the fal'Cie, for a project that is not disclosed in the magazine. Because of disturbances in the space time continuum, the rooms and halls of this building are changing.

I now plan to have a Chocobo with sunglasses in my party, this will be awesome. icon_smile.gif

I seriously have no faith in there reviews anymore. I mean 13 got 39 out of 40.

So what they're basically saying is that it's a tiny fraction better then 13.
Considering how I felt about 13. I'll wait until someone who's taste still holds any credibility gives an opinion on it.

But FFXIII got 39/40 from the same magazine, so I'm still sceptical. Plus I prefer medieval settings for my FF games, give me kingdoms and knights like FFXII and FFIV any day of the week icon_smile.gif Don't really like the futuristic look of these Crystal Tools games to be honest, they look shiny and plastic imo...

It's a good thing that he's the villain then. Famitsu seem to be selling out a bit lately, but I'm still a little relieved to hear that they liked the game as much as FFXIII. That gives me hope that the game will be at least as good as FFXIII, in which case I'll be satisfied.

I think you're missing the point, this is a magazine that gave Nintendogs 40/40

When you start giving out perfect scores to shitty games the idea of a perfect score becomes meaningless. If they gave Saints Row 3 a perfect score it would still mean nothing cause all they're saying is that 'this game is as good as nintendogs'

Fuck, Skyrim doesn't deserve a perfect score. That game is fundamentally broken in many ways that have rendered my main character completely unplayable. When a game that as good as skyrim is, can come out and be so completely and utterly broken and still receive a perfect score. Why the fuck would that score mean anything?

If you pre-ordered at EB you should be able to pick up the pre-order pack now. Not sure why it came so early but I guess it gives me ~2 months to get around to reading "-Episode 1-" which will cover events after 13 and before 13-2.

So you're saying that just because they gave a 40/40 to Nintendogs, a game that you don't think deserves that score, all other 40/40 scores they give are meaningless? By that logic, there can't be many reviewers that you trust, since they often give perfect scores to games that you don't like/think are worthy.

Think about it this way: Saint's Row 3 and Nintendogs were released on completely different consoles. As a DS game, Nintendogs was given a 40/40. That means that if say Mario Kart DS (another DS game) got a 40/40 from them, then they would be saying that the games are roughly as good as each other. Scores given to a game should only be compared with other games that are released on that same platform. That's only fair, after all, and reviwers take that into account when they go to review a game. If they gave 40/40 to Saint's Row 3, all they'd be saying is that it's roughly as good as another 40/40 game released for the PS3/360. If Nintendogs were released for PS3/360, do you think it would get a 40/40? Of course not.

I'm saying that when you start giving good reviews to shitty games, repeatedly. That the value of your review score starts to go down.

I mean consider the fact that in 25 years they've given out 18 perfect scores.

12 of these were in the past 3. That would indicate to me that there standards are slipping.

[edit]
In response to Ad's edit.

Fine then take a good DS game to compare it too. My point is Nintendogs was a fucking awful game. It was barley a game. I mean shit look at some of the other games on there 40/40 list. Skyward Sword? That game does not deserve a 40/40. Hell even the people here that are fans admit the game has some serious flaws. Skyrim, I love that game but it plain doesn't work for people playing on the PS3, when a third of your market are unable to play the game propperly because it's fundamentally broken then it shouldn't get a perfect mark.

Hell out of the 12 games they've given a perfect mark to in the past 3 years the only one I'd consider worthy of it was Bayonetta.

That is why I personally don't think a 40/40 review from them is worth jack shit.

Or if you want to see the cup half full (as opposed to Benza's view as half empty), perhaps there has been an increase of quality games over the past 3 years.

Generally for the "hard core" gamers in Japan, they don't really pay attention to the Famitsu score so religiously. It's more like a guideline, if it gets perfect or close to perfect scores it will garner a look in and then they'll decide if it's that good.

Also Famitsu has changed their reviewers many times over the years so you will get a difference in opinion, this is where Benza's half empty cup comes in, different reviewers, different standards.

Regardless of anyone's opinion on this matter, Famitsu's reviews does sell games, the mainstream in Japan does view their scores a little more religiously and any game that gets a perfect score or comes close will result in a few more extra sales.

See the thing with a perfect score is what you're saying is basically "There will never be a game made that is better then this"

which is well... a complete lie.

A perfect score isn't viewed upon as being a perfect game, Famitsu's system is that 4 reviewers basically give their score out of 10. You could say it's similar to like judging a diving contest, the individual gives what they deemed is a quality game.

10 being it's a great game, they don't see 10 as being a "perfect" game, it's like saying I give this plate of food 10 out of 10, you wouldn't say it's the "perfect" food, you're just saying it's pretty damn good.

No, it's not really saying that. A "perfect" score is more saying that, at this point in time, it is the best in its class, and no game beforehand, at least on this generation, has really surpassed it. Of course if it was released 3-5 years in the future, it might not get a perfect score compared to other games, but at the moment it is the best.

I think there's two ways you can approach a 10/10 score. You could look at 10/10 being just a damn good game or it could mean absolute perfection that no other game can surpass and only match. I think reviewers nowadays tend to go for the former and that's the right way about it in my opinion.
