That's kind of the problem though, if anything designed to elicite an emotional response is 'art' then pretty much everything is art. And the term becomes meaningless.
I mean what value does art have if everything from the roof of the sistine chapel, and michalangelos david to some guy posting Goatse and an anonymous member on 4chan telling you to kill yourself are all art?
It stops being art and starts being... just things. _________________

damm you!

Do we actually allow experts in those fields to tell us what is and isn't art?
Isn't it more we allow experts in art to tell us what is and isn't art?
I mean take John Kricfalusi (The guy behind Ren and Stimpie) that man when it comes to animation knows his shit. He is probably one of the best technical animators in the industry today. He has an amazing wealth of knowledge about pretty much every facet of traditional animation.
As for his opinion on what art is or what the best animated films or shorts are.
They aren't worth shit. I would take the opinion of a 10 year old with more seriousness then I would his.
Likewise someone like Michael Bay would be an expert in film, his movies are loud obnoxious and stupid, but when it comes to the actual mechanics of film etc the man knows his shit. But again his opinion on what art is in films are well... transformers 2 happened. So yeah...
The popular oppinion is also... well worrying to get into. I mean that's kind of falling into an area where modern warfare 2 is the greatest peice of art in the modern world. Wich yeah...
It's the pretentious art critics that get to decide what art is and isn't really. And well... they're pretentious wankers. They're not really experts in anything other then felating other wankers. _________________

Yep, this is what I meant to say.

Agreed.
So either we can redefine "art", thereby rejecting the current establishment, or we can accept the opinions of the pretentious game critics as they felate each other (no offence Cian). _________________ Da Bessssss

I... I'm gonna be honest I've forgotten what exactly I'm arguing.
I think I got a little caught up in arguing and... I think games can be art and all, I was trying to say originally is that poor game mechanics shouldn't be ignored in favor of an artistic game.
I guess I think what's art is kind of a personal thing, that a dictionary can't really define. (also I totally didn't mean Cian by the pretentious art critic thing, I was more thinking of well... go into any art gallery and listen to the people talking and try to resist just wanting to punch some of them, they're just such fucking douchebags.) _________________

Finally received it today. To be honest I'm probably looking forward to replaying ICO more than SOTC, but they'll both be awesome. _________________

The game arrived today
I decided to play Shadow of the Colossus first. Man the menu's are stretched! The first colossus was also a little harder than I expected, mainly because I was fighting with the camera the whole time and had forgotten the controls.
Still beautiful though. _________________

Just defeated the 8th Colossus, I must say you really do feel like a hunter strategising the best way to take out his prey!
My only negative comment on Shadow of the Colossus is that I feel I am constantly fighting the controls. Horse control is abysmal, it's like a mini-game trying to steer the lump in the correct direction. The core-mechanic of Jump&Hold - necessary for environment navigation, and to climb aboard the mythical giants for the kill - is clumsy at best, although I do find it adds to the excitement of the take-down. So still a 9/10 for me so far.
