Stopped playing Xenoblade for the moment as this was just sitting on my desk waiting to be played.

I love the series to death, but as a magic lover in all games, I was seriously peeved when they took the DnD approach of having limited spell casts with no items to replenish them (as far as I've seen so far). Attempted to start as a Sorcerer but the damage output of Soul Arrow is rubbish compared to the Pyromancer's Fireball. That and the Sorcerer's stats are the lowest out of all the classes it seems. I got used to it, but it was a slight annoyance.

Asylum Demon. The tutorial boss of Dark Souls is exactly the same as the Grey Demon from Demons Souls. Except you start with rubbish weapons. While I am aware that 5 Firebombs chosen as a gift will shred the boss, I took the Masters Key because it was the only gift unobtainable from the initial selections. So it ended up with me punching the thing for 20 mins for 2 damage per hit until it died.

Got a mace which I will never use due to it needing 47 STR and 1000 souls. I prefer the Demons Souls rewards.

well I screamed out for the first time since Dead Space 2 demo. I looked below in the depths and saw a butcher. I rolled around and knocked down barrels and made a noise. I look back down and the butcher isn't there anymore. I rescue pyromancer then as I walk out he suddenly appears behind me like he teleported T____T I hate this place. I was nearing the end of the sewers I think - got the key but I ran out of flasks and decided not to risk going further to try and find the bonfire so went back to firelink to learn fireball.

Came out last Thurs THEMAN. Got my sexy CE. Sold out on the PS3 version in my area, plenty of the 360 version floating around when I browsed around JB Hifi/EB.

There are actually two butchers haha, the second one scared the crap out of me too.

I've finally made more progress than my Japanese game, I've got some awesome weapons and key items now too. I spent 40000 souls on some powerful sorcery but didn't realise until after I bought it that I need like 16 more points to my magic stat to use it haha.

You're not really meant to kill the Asylum Demon with your broken sword. There is another approach to the battle which is far more practical.

I wanted the reward. When you killed the Grey Demon in Demons Souls, you were rewarded with a truckload of souls, good crafting materials and you are also rewarded with an extra cutscene, so I was hoping Dark Souls would be the same.

As far as I'm aware, the only practical way I know of beating the tutorial boss is either picking the bombs as your gift or just killing it in NG+.

Doesn't matter either way, I get to say I punched a fat demon in the buttocks 400 times until it keeled over.

Lovely, the damn boss somehow resurrects itself. I'm still only up to the beginning of the game, just vsing the Bell Gargoyles.

Bit surprised they removed the inventory weight requirement.

You need to defeat the Asylum Demon to progress, but you can obtain your weapon and shield before actually taking it on.

I got cursed in the sewers, made me rage as I had to grind 6000 souls to recover -_- Anyway that sewer dragon, wtf-looking thing was an epic battle. Had to summon 2 others, one guy died straight away from a tail swipe and the other took it carefully. It's hard because you can't use your flask if you've been summoned so your health is all you have. Anyway that axe that dropped from cutting its tail, is anyone seriously going to raise strength to 50 to use it? =o looks like the next area is like the swamp in Demon's Souls, but no choice but to do it <_< I managed to kill the big skeletons at the graveyard and pick up the few items there.

Those Bell Gargoyles, apparently you can chop the tail off the first one to get a weapon. I didn't manage to do it, as my dagger wielding thief isn't strong enough but I'll be stronger in New Game+ icon_smile.gif

Honest truth, my initial impressions weren't that great. The tutorial stage didn't impress me and I still can't get over the worse graphics (yes, nitpicking, but lower res, frame rate drops, some low quality textures and blurriness due to the AA; apples with apples, it looks worse than Demons Souls). All that said, something clicked last night after I downed those Bell Gargoyles and I'm loving the game. And the best part, NO GECKOS!

I so badly want to pick up this game, but I know that like Demon's Souls, it will take me a while to play through it. Might hold off getting this until Batman is out and dusted.

@ Cyph
So it looks worse??? That's disappointing.

I think so, yes. Ultimately it doesn't affect the game (apart from the frame rate drops) but it sad to see. I don't know why they felt the need to introduce AA (as I'm assuming that's why they lowered the res and texture quality, to compensate for the frame rate hit it would've caused); in my opinion it doesn't make it look better.

I've run into 2 shiny lizards that droped upgrade stones so I think the geckos are back. Not sure if they are as hard to run down though. I got them pretty quick.

So I've been dabbling in Dark Souls too. Long story short, it's already feeling like my GOTY.

The open world nature of the game lends the experience an vastly expanded scope and with a real feeling of exploration and discovery, not to mention a renewed sense of dread. Sure heading through a doorway in the basement in an undead city and arriving in a vast forest leaves you awe-struck... but not knowing what new monsters lie in wait ahead or if you're currently strong enough to face them makes every step forward a terrifying act. More often than not, the first sign of trouble saw me do a 180 and high-tail it out of there, only to return a few moment later and try my luck (which usually resulted in my doing a 180 and high-tailing it out of there, only now with a horde of monsters on my arse.)

It's all part of the fun though. You really do get the sense that there will come a point when you can stride confidently into an area that destroyed you early on and dish out some destruction yourself. I personally cannot wait for the moment to head into that goddamn skeleton graveyard near the Firelink Shrine and make up for the 30+ deaths that I suffered in my very first session with the game. That was one hard learnt lesson, but I did score myself a sweet Falchion that really helped boost my damage output in the sessions that followed.

My equipment load out is pretty decent atm. I've got what I think is the equivalent of the Purple Flame Shield, a Longbow for ranged attacks and a pretty sweet magic sword which I swiped from the grasping claws of an Undead Dragon. That was as terrifying as it sounds. I've been just about unstoppable since I got that, which was earlier than would have been normal too I think, which is another plus for the open world setup. I simply tried heading in a different direction and viola, awesome gear (also way-too-strong foes but I managed to evade them long enough to escape).

In my last session, I downed the Bell Tower Gargoyles with the help of two phantoms. They went down super quick, plus I was lucky enough to snag the Tail Axe which my measly thief can't use... yet.

I'm loving this game.
