just because i like watching American dad and family guy from time to time but one thing to note about those shows is there mostly made up of internet jokes , inside jokes , poor but refined drawing more or less made from a topic of the week sort of thing often feels like there has to be something for them to be relvent or they wouldn't exist i mean they splice you tube clips and live action peices in all the time - simpsons almost never dos that.

Never did that. That's part of the major problems with the new episodes is they got so dragged down by trying to be more like family guy random pop culture reference **** it ruined the show.

It did though. It always did. It just did so in a way that was clever - a 'cherry on top' way, where if you got the reference, it added to the joke but if you didn't, that's cool, it's still funny anyway. Essentially the exact opposite of 'HEY LOIS REMEMBER THE TIME I....'. You're right that the Simpsons now tries to follow that formula, and does it awfully, though.

I think the difference is, the way they used to do it the pop culture refrences grew organically from the story and the characters. Now days it's more like they think of a few funny pop culture refrences then shoehorn the story/charactesr around them to make it fit.

^No, that's the latest development, post public negotiations. Disappointing, I just want it dead. Oh well, two more years to go.

Benza you asshole, Beauty and the Geek (the US one anyway) is amazing, save for the rare cringey moment.

All cartoon comedies at the moment (save for South Park) are pretty pathetic all round…

The Life & Times of Tim says you're wrong (season three in December). And Sit Down, Shut Up from a couple of years ago had some breathtakingly fantastic episodes.

And uhh… huhuh, Beavis and Butt-head returns at the end of this month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!one!!!!!!!!!

That's a bit of a douchey thing to say. Why does it matter if you don't like it? I don't like a lot of things, but instead of wanting them to be cancelled, I just don't watch them. Amazing, isn't it? This choice thing we all have.

Not necessarily, there's obviously some talent still involved in The Simpsons but the concept is so stale that they'd be better if the show was cancelled and pursued other interests.

The show has long run it's course and would best if it came to an end. However, I'd hate to see the show abruptly canceled in way Angel was without a real conclusion. With that said, I'd just like to see the show go out on a high note with a proper series finale.

how can they ever actually do a series finale though? I honestly can't think of a single thing that would come even close to being satisfying of the shows legacy.

I'd hazard a guess and say it will be like the Sopranos. Not an 'actual' ending, it just ends.

Well, ideally, the finale, or even better, the final season, will have a whole bunch of the old writers brought back. The actual content of it doesn't matter.

I can also see them doing an episode in the style of 'the spin-off showcase' but with cliched finale plotlines. A new baby, someone dying, the Simpsons moving away, etc.

Also, Sit Down, Shut Up was awful.

I would hazard a guess that the final season may well end with a second movie. If this really is a financial decision then I’m sure someone will have remembered that the first movie was a huge success. It received great reviews and made 500 million dollars.

Anyway, my speculations aside, you haters need to suck it up and accept that The Simpsons is an awesome show. It is a far better show than anything else that has been made in the last 20 years (no, I am not trolling for comment, I actually believe this).

Yes, it has dropped off in quality in the last few seasons, but considering quantity of topics they have covered it wouldn’t exactly be easy coming up with new show ideas. People also forget that before the Simpsons animated TV shows for adults did not exist in the mainstream. They quite literally trailblazed what has become an incredibly popular trend.

For me, what makes this show great is the characters. The depth and breadth they have managed to build over the years is amazing. What sets this apart from other comedies (particularly of the animated variety) is that they managed to hit the perfect balance between genuine human emotion and odd-ball quirk. From Homer to Milhouse to Smithers to Moe, each character is weird perversion, yet ultimately they are all motivated by the purest of human emotions. Friendship, family and morality still form the motivation of each of these characters. Hell, even Mr. Burns only ever wanted his teddy bear back.

And if you don't agree with me then answer me this:
Do you have any spare change?

DIU, how much Sit Down, Shut Up did you watch? 'Math Lab' and the flood episode were absolutely incredible. A couple of episodes fell flat but in general it just got phenomenally good. Describing the show as 'excellent' isn't even doing it justice.

And I strongly disagree, old writers wouldn't help, the movie had a whole bunch of those and it was still horrifically bad.

Benza, I agree, or probably would if I could possibly still care about the show, but really they shat all over their legacy long ago.

G3ck0, dick, it's painful how bad it is now and how the new seasons taint the show as a whole. And you know what else? Broadcast airtime is finite. The Simpsons occupies a half-hour spot on Fox's schedule. When it ends, they'll replace it with a new show. And chances are that show will be better (how could it not be?), so my reasoning is practical as well as on principle.

Err, if someone's gonna call me 'douchey', I'm gonna respond. And who's trolling? Plenty of people here are more or less in agreement with me.

Benza, what? It's part of their long-standing Sunday night animated comedy lineup. When the show ceases, they'll put another animated show in its place. There's nothing else they'd put there (live action sitcoms on the night have never succeeded for them) and they're not gonna opt for dead air.

You are a crazy person.

That's why they should have ended it over a decade ago and gone out with even a teaspoon of dignity left. Also, ideas don't matter. The show is unrecognisable compared to what it was. If quality was retained, they could rehash indefinitely.

Incredibly popular might be overstating it. And Hanna-Barbera would beg to differ. Plus, they did not literally carve a track through the wilderness, they literally produced a television show.

Sure. Once upon a time. What you've written is not an accurate reflection of the current show.

But the fact is, people still like the Simpsons. Sure, it's not as good as it used to be, but that doesn't mean that a lot of people don't still like it. It has a larger fan base than a lot of shows, so that's more than enough reason for them to keep making episodes that a lot of people will like.

Not that you'll be able to reply for a couple of days, but I gave it an alright crack. I think I saw maybe the first 6 episodes or so. I wanted to love it, what with all the Arrested Development alum involved, but it was pretty awful. On the same level, if not worse, than the awful Simpsons episodes you are talking about.
