Apple aren't a company about being the company that does something first. They're the company that prides itself on being the company that does things right. It's well documented that Apple didn't invent the first MP3 player, tablet computer, GUI, what they have done is taken concepts and built them in a way that the everyman can use. In some ways, taking those concepts and developing them in a way people will want to use is more difficult than being the first company to come up with those concepts, the evidence being the many market failures that came before the iPad, the iPhone & the iPad.
Steve himself was a well known micromanager, while you can't discount the hard work of every engineer and developer at Apple, Steve was always hands-on pushing to create better products, bringing together the best people in the industry and demanding perfection from his products. He ran the company with a vision in mind and delivered the most popular products on the marketplace today.
Doesn't matter if you liked or loathed Apple, it's influence and the influence of it's charismatic iCEO has been the driving force of the many changes that have occurred to the IT industry.
He is also one of the few businessmen in history that influenced so many industries, mobile phones haven't been the same since the iPhone, the iPod ditched the CD player. iTunes bought movie and music companies kicking and screaming into the 21st century (iTunes is easily the biggest music retailer in the world). The iPad started a renewed drive towards mobile computing & the macintosh computers bought about a atheistic revolution in computers, away from beige boxes and flat UIs to something far more appealing and easy to use.
He had his fingers in all of these projects, if you read testimonials from the people who knew Steve, they tell a story of a very passionate man. A person who took the time to reply to customers who emailed him, someone who'd call up developers on a Sunday to provide support for their products. Who took the time to listen to people and work out what they want, before they even knew they wanted it. You only have to look at the history of Apple and the culture of it to know his influence in the company he's created.
I might come across as gushing here, but I sort of wanted to vent a little bit after reading some really stupid comments (Not in here though  ) from people who didn't even take the time to even get a basic grasp of him. It's always sad to lose a person to cancer, for me though the world lost a true visionary. One of the big three (Gates, Jobs & Woz) people who have driven computing for three decades now has died today and the world will not be the same without him.
RIP Steve.

^ I'm gonna say the Newton's a PDA and therefore a different line of product.  But we're not counting it because it wasn't from Jobs and wasn't really a success.

I think you'll find that's not the case. What Apple are good at is making things that a very old seem new and innovative. Example: Front-Facing camera on a phone? My Mum's Motorola Razr had one, and that was from 2001. A more recent example: Siri. Available on the AppStore for free for the past few years. Apple buys it out, integrates it into the OS, and now it's some new future tech. |
I think you'll find it is the case. Front facing camera done by Motorola? Snore. Done by Apple? Snore again (but FaceTime means that snore is slicker, easier and higher quality). By the way, the RAZR came out in 2004. Few phones (under a grand anyway) even had 256 colour screens in 2001, let alone cameras.
I didn't know much about Siri until reading up on it just now, and the old app sounds pretty great, but how could integrating it into the OS and as an API for third party apps not extend its use amazingly? It'll explode. I guarantee as best they can (technically and legally), Google, MS, RIM and whoever else is left in the race will be looking to include similar functionality post haste.

I believe Android has had the feature for a year now (Not built by Siri though), though I can't speak for it's usability or accuracy.

The thing is, you just know it's not going to work as well as Apple's version.
And that's the thing with Apple, there's always that extra attention to detail to make it "work how it should" rather than "just work". Jobs was obsessed with details like that.
I think this anecdote from Folklore.org sums up the way Steve saw the world more than any other thing I can think of:

But Bill had come up with a clever way to do the circle calculation that only used addition and subtraction, not even multiplication or division, which the 68000 could do, but was kind of slow at.
Bill's technique used the fact the sum of a sequence of odd numbers is always the next perfect square (For example, 1 + 3 = 4, 1 + 3 + 5 = 9, 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16, etc). So he could figure out when to bump the dependent coordinate value by iterating in a loop until a threshold was exceeded. This allowed QuickDraw to draw ovals very quickly.
Bill fired up his demo and it quickly filled the Lisa screen with randomly-sized ovals, faster than you thought was possible. But something was bothering Steve Jobs. "Well, circles and ovals are good, but how about drawing rectangles with rounded corners? Can we do that now, too?"
"No, there's no way to do that. In fact it would be really hard to do, and I don't think we really need it". I think Bill was a little miffed that Steve wasn't raving over the fast ovals and still wanted more.
Steve suddenly got more intense. "Rectangles with rounded corners are everywhere! Just look around this room!". And sure enough, there were lots of them, like the whiteboard and some of the desks and tables. Then he pointed out the window. "And look outside, there's even more, practically everywhere you look!". He even persuaded Bill to take a quick walk around the block with him, pointing out every rectangle with rounded corners that he could find.
When Steve and Bill passed a no-parking sign with rounded corners, it did the trick. "OK, I give up", Bill pleaded. "I'll see if it's as hard as I thought." He went back home to work on it.
Bill returned to Texaco Towers the following afternoon, with a big smile on his face. His demo was now drawing rectangles with beautifully rounded corners blisteringly fast, almost at the speed of plain rectangles. When he added the code to LisaGraf, he named the new primitive "RoundRects". Over the next few months, roundrects worked their way into various parts of the user interface, and soon became indispensable. |

I'm pretty sure I own the folklore.org book and have for nearly six years. Might actually get around to reading it now.
I'm legitimately amazed that Google has that voice stuff, just because I've never heard a thing about it (not that I really pay attention to phone stuff). And I'll be amazed if Apple's version isn't better both because it's Apple and because Google's has been around so long now.
Google really needs better marketing.

This is a public forum, we are not all going to agree on things.
I think Cyph might be trying to point out that we all jump on the news of dead "celebrities" (or whatever Steve is) like we knew them, posting RIP messages on Facebook and the like.

That's because while we may not know celebrities directly, they are still part of our lives so it's sad when they pass.
While it's not exactly the same, we have threads for people that pass away from this site where some of feel sad even though we don't even know the person.Like people here who have passed away that I never even spoke to, it was still sad to hear that they passed away.
To me they were just posters on PALGN but they were still indirectly part of my life because I spend quite a lot of it here.

Well that's really the point.I never even knew the guy existed till you posted about him so of course SJ passing away is going to have much more of an impact.
But that doesn't mean that I don't think it's sad but if I had to cry over one of the deaths it wouldn't be that guys.

Was the fact he had cancer ever public knowledge? His death comes as a bit of a shock, I thought he resigned for other reasons. He definitely looks very thin and frail in a photo taken a couple of months ago.

Google is all about engineers, they make stuff and if you use it that's a bonus.
Steve Jobs was a truly remarkable human being. When I was at Uni I had to write an essay on him for one of my business units and I was absolutely blown away by what he had accomplished. Sure he had his faults, who doesn't, and love or loath him there is no escaping the fact that he has left a definite impression on our world. His contributions to technology, design, media, retail will live on long after the iPhones popularity begins to dwindle.
For those doubting his contributions to Apple products, his name appears on some 300+ patents (sure he probably didn't develop every single one of those on his own without help, I'm not brainwashed, but the evidence doesn't specify how great his contribution to each one was) and it's well documented that every design that comes out of Apple, from the latest iPod to a bus stop advertisement for the iPhone was personally approved by Jobs himself.
Anyway, I don't want to get all long winded and boring so I'll finish with a link to the best 'Steve Story' I have seen today. It's written by Brian Lam (the Gizmodo guy at the centre of the lost iPhone scandal).

Google's main business is marketing, in the form of adverts, not consumer products. If they build a product and it fails, they just sell adverts elsewhere.
Although that seems to be changing now, with their heavy investment into Motorola Mobility recently.
