DOA 5 may be the breath of fresh air that the genre needs.
To be honest I'm getting kinda sick of the clusterf*** of Crapcom and Namco fighters.
Now if only Arc Systems started working on Guilty Gear X3...
EDIT
Just to add more to the rant:
I really appreciate what Street Fighter IV did for the revival of the genre in this generation, but now we're seeing history repeat itself once more, with Crapcom and Namco saturating the market with WAY TOO MANY releases in a freakishly short time frame. There's barely any compelling improvement or changes between the releases.
I'm glad some companies take their time, companies like Team Ninja, because man the leap from DOA 4 to DOA 5 is going to kick the living **** out of the leap between Tekken 5 and Tekken 6, and MvC 3 and UMvC 3. _________________

If there was a 3D fighting franchise that tried to take a bold step into the future, it was Dead or Alive. From a technical standpoint (note: techinical NOT graphical) it introduced many great ideas (the massive and highly varied arenas, and full 3D fighting gameplay).
I will admit the game sacrificed the depth, precision and balance that characterises most tournament level fighters today. But shit man...the genre is gonna stay in a rut if fans don't open their mind.
The best example is Tekken 4, even till this day it's one of my top fighting games and to me the best Tekken game ever. With that game Namco tried to take a bold step into the future, by retaining the core mechanics that made Tekken so great while adding a whole layer of depth to it. They did this by adding free 3D movement, shoving mechanic, multi-teired areans with breakable objects and other gimmicks, and better implementation of wall combos. How did purists react? they moaned that it wasn't like Tekken 3...and behold!! Namco stayed with the Tekken 3 mould in Tekken 5 and 6.
Now I hate reboots, but what Tekken 4 did was NOT a reboot (feel free to argue otherwise), it was an significant evolution to the Tekken gameplay, not a complete doover.
It's sad that I play a game like Fighters Megamix or even Tekken 3, and realise that the genre barely made any progress outside of graphics and other combat mechanics.
Now Dead or Alive 2 tried alot of different things, and with 3 and 4 they improved upon them. Sadly, the series is only recognised for it's boob animation but man, both gamers and even Team Ninja give DOA too little credit for what it really accomplished.
Dead or Alive 5, based on that trailer, is already looking promising and I have a feeling that it will feature arenas and environment mechnics that other fighting games can only dream of.

some more info from there twitter feed.
| Quote: | | “Here’s a little more explanation about what’s going on in the pre-alpha gameplay. Keep in mind that the game is still in development, so things could change between now and the final version. The part where time slows down and Hayate hits Hayabusa back into the steel beams–that’s a Power Blow. The fighter doing a Power Blow has a little time to change the direction, so you could choose what Danger Zone to send an opponent into. When Hayabusa is dangling from the edge of the platform–that’s a new kind of Danger Zone we’re calling a Cliffhanger. In the video, Hayate just charges and beats him down, but there’s actually a little gameplay going on during a Cliffhanger; Hayabusa could have turned things around on Hayate. BTW, you can tell if a strike hits high, mid or low by the direction of the hit effect.” |

Create your own move, which could be included in the game!
| Quote: | Team NINJA is having a contest for their upcoming game Dead Or Alive 5. You can be part of the lucky winners to have his own move implemented in the game! Your name will also appear in the credits at the end.
“We wanted to create an opportunity to further celebrate and involve our loyal Dead or Alive community in a way that directly rewarded them,” said Yosuke Hayashi, leader of Team NINJA. “By hosting our â€Make Your Move’ contest, we will be able to see and encourage our fighting fans to play an active and creative role in this next game which is something that really excites and inspires us.”
The contest kicks off on Friday, October 28th on and will close on Friday, November 18th. That gives you three weeks to get cracking and work on your design. Team NINJA will allow for multiple submissions and anyone over the age of 17 can enter. To submit players must draw, write, or act or pretty much any other form of expression. I’d like to see who makes a musical entry. For video entries, a URL link must be included in the description field. For picture formats, jpeg, gif or png are accepted with up to three images of 2MB max.
To submit an entry, go on their website at http://teamninja-studio.com/doa5/ or Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/deadoralivegame |

| Quote: | Dead Or Alive 5′s Stages Are Loaded With Traps
Tecmo Koei outlined two features of Dead or Alive 5. Well, three if you count redesigned character models too. Team Ninja’s fighting game has "Dynamic Attractions," a fancy term for stage gimmicks. You can knock opponents from heights, onto exploding floors, and into cars. Tecmo Koei says these are an evolution of Danger Zones from previous titles and are supposed to replicate the climactic scenes of action movies. |

Want a demo?
| Quote: | Ninja Gaiden 3 Includes Dead or Alive 5 Demo
Tecmo Koei has a big bonus for those who pick up Ninja Gaiden 3 early. The game's first print run will include a serial code for downloading a demo of Dead or Alive 5.
The demo, titled "Demo Alpha Version," differs for PS3 and 360 owners. PS3 owners get Hayate and Ayane as playable characters. Xbox 360 owners get Hayabusa and Hitomi as playable characters.
Want all four characters? Then you'll need to pick up the game's pricier Collectors Edition. Buyers of this version get the Dead or Alive 5 Demo Alpha Version Premium Edition, which includes all four characters.
Tecmo Koei says that the demo will not be released outside of the Ninja Gaiden 3 bonus. |
