Quote:
According to the Associated Press, Apple Co-Founder and technological giant Steve Jobs has died. He was 55.

Jobs, who founded Apple Computing with Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula, and others in the late 1970s, is responsible directly and indirectly for the iPhone, the iPad, The Apple Macintosh line of computers and a number of other innovations that have revolutionized the way we work, play, and interact. Jobs had been battling a rare and painful form of pancreatic cancer since 2004, and resigned from his position as head of Apple on August 24 of this year, writing that he could "no longer meet his duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO." Since then, Jobs had served as the chairman of Apple's board of directors.

Sometimes referred to as the Thomas Edison of his time, Jobs was either the primary inventor or co-inventor of 338 US patents or patent applications ranging from computer and portable devices to user interfaces, speakers, keyboards, power adapters, staircases, clasps, sleeves, lanyards and packages. His impressive array of patents speaks towards his creativity, ingenuity, and love of innovation, along with his hands-on approach to management, one that he applied very successfully during his time at Apple.

Jobs was also instrumental in the success of computer animation company Pixar, purchasing the company in the late 1990s and acting as its CEO through one of the most successful times in the company's history, producing classic movies like A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, WALL-E, and Toy Story 3.

With his trademark black turtleneck, Apple fans always looked forward to Jobs getting up on stage and announcing "just one more thing," but it was never just one more thing; it was always so much more than that. Apple, under Jobs's impressive leadership, introduced products that were not only useful, but incredibly simple to use and stylish. Jobs transformed Apple from a producer of products to a worldwide brand that oozes class and sophistication.

In recent years with the release of the iPhone and iPad which ushered in the era of smart phones and mobile gaming for the masses, it seems as though the entire tech industry has been trying to keep pace with Apple, without ever been able to catch up. What Steve Jobs built was a company that made computing sexy. The allure of owning an iPhone is not only that it's an impressive piece of machinery, but that all the cool kids have one. . .and Steve Jobs was definitely one of the cool kids.

We'll miss you, Steve.

RIP Stevo, shame he left so young.

I guess he should be a figurehead for the motto 'Soldiering On' when you're sick at work. He must have been really sick when he stepped down a few weeks ago.

I think it would be good, for a change, if people weren't complete idiots for a day. Really, that's not asking for much, yet people are still going to post dumb, disrespectful jokes in here because somebody told them that being a moron was cool. Grow up, please.

RIP Steve, a legend and a role model despite all of the bullshit. You'll be missed, don't listen to the haters.

This is a public forum, we are not all going to agree on things.

I think Cyph might be trying to point out that we all jump on the news of dead "celebrities" (or whatever Steve is) like we knew them, posting RIP messages on Facebook and the like.

Personally, I'm not an Apple fan and don't know Steve from the next guy, so I posted two jokes about Google taking over the world on my Facebook and Twitter pages, instead of the boring "RIP" status that everyone else is doing. It's sad news, but it's not going to change my life in the slightest.

Let's try to keep it cool in this thread.

You can't control what people say...not everyone deals with this sort of thing in the same way and nor can you expect them to.
I am pretty sure he lived a good life to it's fullest and i don't know what more anyone could ask for than that.

This is where i remind you that you got butthurt in the michael jackson thread though mr theory icon_razz.gif

Cancer took our Jobs, not the Mexicans.

Rip you magnificent bastard. While I'm no fan of Apple products, you can't deny he was a massive influence and forward thinker when it comes to technological innovation. That and without him Pixar would never have made it.

55 is too damn young, the man was still at his prime with who knows how many innovations floating inside his mind.

It's crazy, I can't believe it.

R.I.P Steve Jobs.

Or it could be the fact that people on the forum would genuinely mourn the death of someone who completely changed the face of media as we know it.

I mean weather you support apple products or not (Personnly I don't own a single one) you can't deny the impact that apple products have had on the face of media today. I mean shit iTunes makes up like 25% of global music sales these days.

This isn't some trashy nothing celebrity dying like if Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton died. This is someone who has basically changed the world.

Thank you Theory, that was my point exactly. Didn't think I would need to spell it out here, but I guess so.

Benza, if you are interested on my remark, I'll tell you the same thing I told me wife while dropping her off at work this morning, after listening to this news non-stop for the past 2 hours (on the tv, radio, her Facebook, etc); I honestly feel sad that Steve has passed away. But his death, no matter how famous he is, is no more significant than anyone else, past present or future, who has passed away. My thoughts are with his family and friends as much as they are with anyone else who passes away.

When I first heard this news I immediately thought about waiting besides the death bed of my family and friends who have tragically passed away, many due to cancer. And I thought to myself, 'This guy, Steve, gets so much attention (for obvious reasons), but no one cares about all the other people. They don't get any such attention or interest. Yet to me, I will remember them always'.

I do not consider what I said as disrespectful, maybe not entirely appropriate, but not disrespectful. I was merely trying to put some/my perspective on the big(ger) picture.

I posted this on G+, but it best sums up my feelings:

I can't easily explain how I feel about Steve Jobs' death. On one hand, it's a celebrity death, but on the other, Steve Jobs has probably had more influence over the lives of people in this world than any other person. Keep in mind that he didn't just envision the Macintosh, but the entire computing world as it exists today owes a debt to him.

Without that vision, we wouldn't be using Mac OS or Windows, and even the GUI options in Linux would not exist as they do. The GUI on your mobile phone (even if it isn't an iPhone) and even on your TV owe something to ideas that came from the Macintosh project, and from Jobs himself.

That desire to make computers easy to use enabled an entire generation of people to be more productive, more creative and more communicative than any who have come before them. Anything that's been printed or published by a computer, any digitally edited film or video, any photoshopped image you see exists because of the enabling power of the modern computer. Were it not for Steve Jobs and his vision of the computer for the rest of us, none of that would exist.

Rest in peace, Steve. You changed the world more than even you'll ever know.

Sorry but no. He may have had a large influence of computer technology, but if you take just a small peek outside the scope of technology there are plenty of people who have shaped the world we live in far more than Steve Jobs.

As for the topic at hand I'll admit I'm pretty much at the point where I despise the way Apple is heading as a company, but it's never good to see anyone die. Especially of an illness such as cancer at such a relatively young age.

People get the amount of attention in relation to how many lives they've effected. Of course the people dear to you will always be dear to you and you will mourn for them. But they've effected far less people in there lives then someone like Steve Jobs. So of course there is going to be a greater outpouring of sadness over his death.

And I know it's not politically correct, but some peoples deaths are more significant then others. And old man dying in his sleep after living a happy and fulfilling life is less significant then a young genius taken in his prime as he was working on a cure for AIDS or something. An entertainer that brought smiles to the faces of millions of people's death is going to be more significant then a hobo starving to death. To say otherwise is just being ignorant.

The death of Steve Jobs is no more significant than a homeless lady dying in the street?

I don't think so.
