Mattboy and anyone else that knows about lighting cars,
I've also got a d90, a single sb600 with softbox + triggers at my disposal. Say I want to get into car photography, in particular lighting them at night what is the best way to go about it?
Am I supposed to pop the flash in various places and then combine them in PS? Or should I be getting a torch and lightpainting it? _________________

depends on what style you want to achieve. i do both, and often apply both techniques to the same shot to try n get a unique look. start off with ah tripod, a flash and a set of comfortable shoes. s
softboxes on flashes around cars are more often then not a pain in the arse. bare flashes are where it's at. _________________ Worst. Signature. Ever.

I've begun saving, it will make my 7D redundant save for crop-body zoom.
Miss the solid build quality of my 1DIIN when using the 5DII and 7D, apparently the noise levels are a lot better than the 1D IV, partnering it with a 85mm f/1.2 and going out handholding at night would be fun.
Tempted to sell off my 7D for ~$1100 given an opportunity, but the release date on the 1DX being so far off gives a bit of time to think.
14FPS would be blissful for my airshow and wildlife shots, not to mention the snappy AF points... _________________

Tired of focusing? http://www.lytro.com/ ~$400ish
It's a light field camera so you can refocus shots after you've already taken them. Quite low res at the moment, but interesting nonetheless. _________________

Been a while since I've posted any evo shots. Went out on friday afternoon for a cruise and ended up taking these...
The car looked extremely comfortable out there off the tarmac _________________ Worst. Signature. Ever.

Anyone know where I can get a good tutorial for lighting cars?
Matboy what kind of lighting did you use in those pictures above? Other than the natural light I mean
A friend asked me to take photos of her new golf and I wouldn't know where to start since lighting cars seems so daunting what with reflective surfaces and the such.
What I have to work with:
D90/35mm/17-50mm/10-20/18-105
sb600
softbox/lightstand/cactus v4/wireless trigger for camera. _________________

^ This would be handy for me too. I plan to try taking a few pics of my new car on the weekend. Mind you I don't have much in the way of lighting gear, so it'll probably be natural light or long-exposure+torch. _________________

Lighting a car is like the rabbit hole in wonderland. Soooooo much stuff.
If you're not planning on wasting tonnes of time on it the best and quickest answer is to shoot in natural light but do it between an hour before sunset til sunset. you'll get some amazing shots with natual light on a car during this time. the colours will come and play.
If you want to use some flashes, shoot bare. Don't waste your time on modifiers unless you've got a softbox thats car size (Read STUDIO).
I usually use 2 to 4 flashes for most strobed shots. unless I'm just trying to highlight something specific.
If you don't have that much fgear, put ur camera on a tripod. move the flash between shots. Stack them in shop later.
Something that took me a LONG time to learn, the best strobed shots are ones that don't really looked strobed at all. (which is way harder than it sounds)
this shot here, i would strobed from about 6 locations, but apart from a couple spots it looks like natural light.
good luck! and post up what you take so i can have a look _________________ Worst. Signature. Ever.

My Canon 550D, 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and a MT-24EX twin light flash.
The flash makes things so much easier compared to just the lens. I just need to worry about focus and not getting enough light now =) _________________
