I had a bberry bold 9700 for about 2 years (maybe less, whenever they first came out) as my work phone. Only just switched over to a Galaxy S2 a few weeks ago.
Very good phone, great for email. However, as with all bberry's the app support is pretty crap, especially if you are used to an iphone. THey are a great business phone though, but when it comes to "fun stuff" iphone/android are better IMO.
No idea when its due out here (may already be here) but the Bold 9900 is much the same phone (looks wise) but has a touch screen as well as the keypad, heard its pretty decent, but again, app devs often dont bother with bberry. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

spudgun: if you don't like how slow the iPhone 3G is, consider the iPhone 4 (or wait for the rumoured revised version coming soon). There's a notable speed increase in the latter. _________________

The iPhone 4 is the same hardware as your iPod Touch 4th Gen. No point doubling up really, unless you really like the idea of Apple adding phone functionality to your iPod and charging you a premium for it.
If you don't want to use a phone for emails or anything, then the real question is: why are you looking at smartphones? _________________

Good point Goobs.
spugun: What do you actually plan on doing with the phone? Just making phone calls? SMS? MMS?
I'd just get the cheapest phone I could if you were only doing that. Or just stick it out with the iPhone 3G. If can't be that bad just using the basic phone stuff. _________________

I send ALOT of texts, maybe over 100 a day ? , I also plan to use 0.facebook, The reason I don't wanna use emails is because i'm on prepaid, although i could buy data...
I think i'll go with the blackberry and buy data each month. I need to be on 1c text and I wish telstra had a 1cent text plan.

Can get some awesome plans that are MUCH better than pre-paid at http://liveconnected.com.au/, I've been with them for quite a while and they are amazing value. Use the Optus network too, so pretty good coverage.

Of course, the only problem with using the Optus network is that, you know, you're using the Optus network. Really can't wait for my Optus contract to run out and switch to a competent carrier. _________________

I haven't had any problems with them at all. I get signal in most places (only been in two places where I struggle to get any signal), and everything works fine.

Oh, I have no problems getting signal. But receiving SMS? That's an altogether different problem.
Optus completely falls over at large events too, don't expect your phone to behave like a phone on Optus. _________________

I've been with Optus for five years and have never had a problem.
As to the Blackberry, I'd avoid it. Blackberry are in real strife at the moment, and there's a lot of speculation that they have a very limited future. Even Windows Phone 7 has better long-term prospects than Blackberry right now. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I've been with Optus for 12 years and have watched their quality of service slide downhill. _________________
