And now for the next trick: to find a review anywhere on the internets that doesn't make an "epic" pun. _________________

I love you Cody, you're a beautiful hairy man, much like Dom, but I have to completely disagree with that score.
I'm up to Act 4 and have purposely stayed offline to avoid spoilers and whatnot. So far, it's perfect. There's actually nothing wrong with it, Epic have mastered third person shooters and as far as I'm concerned, this is the best third person shooter ever made. And I'm saying that without playing it on co-op, and I know that's going to make it even better.
The gameplay is just so amazing. The pacing is amazing. The enemy variety is unparalleled. It's clearly the best looking game on the system. And all of this before getting hooked on the multiplayer...
Now, you're probably going to say that the story is holding it back from the elusive 10. I can see your argument but it's a helluva lot better than most other games, in fact, I think it's been harshly criticised by the majority of gamers out there. Let's just say the end of Act 3 will change everyone's mind, I'd put it on a par with a certain moment in Shadow of the Colossus, almost.
Really, you couldn't have asked for a better conclusion to the best trilogy of the generation. Big fans like myself will relish it and I honestly can't see how people can give it below a 9. It just doesn't make any sense. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. The first one was brilliant, revolutionary I would say, the second one was better and I think Gears 3 is the best of the bunch.
Personally, I'd give it a 9.5 and the only thing knocking it back is the idea of a 10 being "revolutionary". At the time, I would have given the original Gears full marks, even though this one is far superior in every way. Am I making sense? Probably not, who cares.
Best game of 2011 so far, can't see anything other than Battlefield 3 coming close to it.
Cliffy B and your band of brothers, I salute you all. _________________

Honestly I think Gears has always gotten an unfair wrap in the story department. I loved the story in the original, and more importantly I loved how it was told. It built a world bigger then the game. Which I honestly can't think of any other games have done in such a way.
The inclusion of the Brumark is the bit that stands out the most in my mind in the first game. any other game if they'd done that creature it would have been a boss fight. In Gears it shows up in a cut scene, and that's it. It wasn't important for the story except to have a big monster show up and chase them out of the house. So that's the only purpose it served. There's heaps of stuff like that in the game, stuff that hints at a much bigger richer world without feeling the need to ceaselessly explain every minute detail (As much as I love that stuff in Mass Effect, some times it's nice to have mystery for some stuff too.) But the little bits like Fenix starting off in jail with no explination, the first time you see the emulsion without it ever being explained what it is, the glowing explodey... little dog monsters, the krill etc.
Can't fucking wait for this one, will be picking it up tomorrow. _________________

Give it 3 odd weeks. Rage cometh and tbh I've personally never seen a game on consoles pull off what that game does at 60fps.

Can agree that the first was awesome, I played it to death. Second was pretty good too. If you're talking about it being revolutionary because of its cover stuff though, then do disagree there as Kill.switch did that first.
Anyway, I should take out my Xbox and pick this game up at some stage. Though I hate Epic a little for killing UT, Gears is still a good series. _________________

Kill Switch didn't revolutionize the game industry though, GoW did. Being revolutionary is more then who did it first. It's also how much it of an effect it had. _________________

Or realistically, how big of a marketing push it has, and Gears had that in spades.
I'll give Gears credit for being really polished and refined with the mechanic though, but I just never saw it as revolutionary personally. _________________

Marketing push or not, the countless cover based shooters full of waist high debris that came out following Gears. I doubt they were thinking "Shit we should make a game like kill.switch"
I reckon that's what makes it revolutionary. The same as Halo wasn't the first game to do regenerating shields or two weapon load outs but it was the game that made them popular. _________________

Definitely don't disagree with you there, I'm just an old hardcore gamer fart that knows too much about games no one else in the mainstream knows about.
Now that gears is done though, I'm fucking hoping they do something new with UT. Apparently they do want to give it some love again, which'd be awesome. _________________

I'm a huge fan of the campaign in the first Gears, in fact it's still among my fave games.
The 2nd game however was a huge let down (to me), the campaign didnt really click the same way and it got really boring as the pacing was as consistent and rock solid as the first game.
So yea, not sure if I'm gonna play 3. _________________

Killswitch was not a good shooter. Gears was. Just because something was done first in another game doesn't mean the game that does it right is not revolutionary.
