Posted: Fri Sep 09, 2011 4:06 pm Post subject: Nintendo's 2011 September Conference |
|
|
|
|
Nintendo's annual September/October/Whenever conference is due next week, on Tuesday to be specific. They do one every year, towards the end, and the conference usually serves the purpose of touching on current projects, as well as 2012 content.
Past conferences have ranged pretty significantly in megatons, but unlike your E3s and what have you something always comes out of these, big or small. Unlike past years, this year is specifically focusing on the 3DS. No Wii, nor Wii U. Thus, we are likely to get some 3DS announcements.
Getting it out of the way, yes this stupid analogue adapter will probably be shown, and yes Nintendo will make a big deal out of it regardless of how anybody feels about it. Monster Hunter Tri G could be the 'big' game they will show, and Famitsu may have spoiled that one early. It might not matter much to you/us, but Monster Hunter is huge in Japan, so it makes sense for this for Nintendo to pimp it.
And as this is Nintendo, we'll also have them focus on a bunch of games we already know plenty about; Mario, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, etc. Such is the way with Nintendo, so dealwithit.gif.
We dont really know what else will be shown. MHTriG and the analogue shell are the only confirmed surprises, but there's quite a few rumours (as always) going around. Read on, but take with a grain of salt.
- Rumour Round 1: Japan's Rumours
TLDR, awhile ago a bunch of Japanese blogs had this list of games that were apparently going to be announced around TGS. You can check it here. Two things make this rumour list plausible. Firstly, unlike your typical 'wish list' rumours composed of dream titles, this was full of weirdly specific games that nobody requested. Secondly, a whole bunch, including Monster Hunter Tri G, have now been confirmed true, making the rest of them look likely. If it is indeed correct, the 3DS will be seeing 4 Warriors of Light 2 and a Miku Hatsune game. Its also possible these wont be announced at the Nintendo event, but instead TGS.
- Rumour Round 2: Typical 2ch
2ch always come out with some rumours. I suspect they like trolling us honkeys. Regardless, they can be found here. MHTriG and the Hatsune Miku game are mentioned, along with a new Yoshi side scroller from Good Feel (Kirby's Epic Yarn), a new title from the WarioWare team, a new Etrian Odyssey, an Alchemist project, a fifth Ace Attorney, 3DS/Vita God Eater, and a revival of Grasshopper's cancelled The Silver Case DS port, now for the 3DS.
- Rumour Round 3: 4chan lols
See here. Again with the MHTriG, now with extra dudebro Mach Rider revival, and the hilariously titled Baten Kaitos: Silence of the Mechanised Son. 99% probability of being bullshit, as CESA has nothing to do with Nintendo's conference (as far as we're aware).
- Rumour Round 4: He said, she said
Not much to this other than a reliable chap on NeoGAF claiming to have been told of some stuff being shown, specifically a new Fire Emblem, and both Contra and Castlevania from Konami. Not sure about this. Fire Emblem is due for a revival and now would be the time, and Contra appeared on that 3DS software list from the original announcement. Plus Konami's Castelvania team has 3DS dev kits. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
So there's that. Take your picks, whiners whine, fanboys drool, whatever yo. PEACE. _________________

I fully expect them to announce a new hardware revision incorporating the second circle pad and extra L/R buttons, alongside a new, higher quality LCD panel and 16gb of internal storage, pissing off early adopters even further. _________________

Hopefully something good comes out of this. It's hard to stay positive with the 3DS, when Nintendo seem to be doing everything they can to bury the thing. _________________

'Something' good will come out of it. Whether or not that something is what you want is another thing entirely, and even then that something isn't going to change the 3DS situation _________________

I will be happy if at this conference Nintendo show that they have a plan to turn the 3DS situation around.
The best way is always software. I think it was you who said in another thread; they need offer lucrative publishing deals to third party developers to get well known franchises on the system. More of their core franchises can't hurt.
At the end of the day, I'm satisfied with the 3DS as is. I know I'll get my fix of Nintendo games out of it, but I'd rather the system do well. _________________

Rumour set 2 seems the most appealing (new Yoshi game!) but I'm not putting my money behind it being anything true.
A 3DS revision surely has to be coming, but would Nintendo announce it now and piss off early adopters even more? I think they should just get all the negativity out in one hit, like ripping off a band-aid, but I'm not sure they will want to.
What else could there be? Something Pokemon is surely coming, but I doubt they'd announce it here. There's a bunch of Mario already, and a bunch of Kirby across the other Nintendo platforms.
What has Retro been up to? _________________

Retro went through another staff exodus recently, no doubt sick of Nintendo's shit like last time, so they might still be flip flopping around projects. That or we'll get Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, which would actually be pretty awesome. _________________

I would not be opposed to that one bit.
Sad to hear about another mass exodus, though. _________________

Both senior producer Bryan Walker and senior game designer Mike Wikan left the company recently. They've lost an insane amount of key high ranking staff, probably because Nintendo is a stubborn company that wouldn't give Retro any flexibility to work on non-established franchises.
I'm waiting for their dud. Its hard to criticise them since they're currently 4 for 4, but we'll see how number five, whatever it is, ends up. _________________

Do you have links? I'm curious to read into this. Where did they go? _________________

Back in 2008 the company lost Mark Pacini, Todd Keller, and Jack Mathews, which cost the company their lead designer, lead art director, and lead technology engineer. They went to found Armature Studio, who had a deal with EA that, as far as I'm aware, fell through. No idea what they're working on at the moment. All three played very important roles in the Metroid Prime trilogy.
The general assumption is they left because Nintendo wanted them to work on another Nintendo IP, and they weren't given the freedom they required. After they left the company was in limbo a bit, so Nintendo got them to jump into DKCR.
It looks like Walker is still at the company, though I thought he left. Mike Wikan is gone though. He was a senior designer that has been with the company for ages, I'm pretty sure taking Mark Pacini's role after he left. Wikan played a big part in DKCR, as far as I'm aware, as he actually helped localise one of the original DKC games. Iwata called it 'fate' or something, the two meeting against to do Donkey Kong. He's now working at id Software.
I dont have links on hand, but if you Google the names you'll find stuff. A lot of the info comes from hear-say, people I've spoken to and what have you, but regardless the company has lost a pretty frightening amount of high ranking staff over the last few years. _________________

Ah, yeah, I remember that. Thought you were talking about a recent exodus.
Although I didn't know about staff leaving over the past couple of years... Interesting. _________________

Surely pokemon "Grey" will be announced here or at TGS. I simply can't believe it would be too far away, no further away than March. Nintendo really have to come up with something special, though, because the 3DS is looking like death.

Is this real? I saw a post that had the Sapphire version as well, along with a small story and a link to the Japanese Pokemon site, but I can't find it anymore. So, legit? I kinda hope not, we need 3DS games not DS.

Do you think Pokemon making the jump to 3DS would be significantly different? I'm not a fan, but I can't tell the difference between a new DS pokemon game and the original GameBoy one... =\ _________________

Okay, so Animal Crossing, Paper Mario and a new Mario Tennis are all out next year. There's a new Fire Emblem is development.
Biggest announcement, at least in Japan, Monster Hunter 4 is confirmed as a 3DS title. I want to know what Nintendo did to get Capcom to develop it for 3DS, because that **** is going to sell the console better than anything else in Japan. _________________

Are you daft? A hardware revision this early would be foolish.

Well the 2nd stick I think has already done some serious damage...announcing the new hardware revision is probably the right thing to do. _________________ Shin J Leon.

A hardware revision will come sooner rather than later, but announcing a revision now would be a terrible business move. The goal is to penetrate the mass market and build a brand name, not splinter and confuse them, which is exactly what a 3DS revision at this point will do. _________________
