Before people get too loco with excitement, I want to note that the Starbreeze of today is very, very different from the Starbreeze of yesteryear. A hugely significant portion of the team that made both Butcher Bay and The Darkness jumped ship from the company a couple of years back.
The team that is working on Syndicate is largely completely different to the team that made the old Starbreeze games. _________________

I hope they keep some strategic elements, like the research, destructible buildings and an assortment of traps. If it's a straight-up, gung-ho shooter I'm not touching it. _________________

I like that 99% of reboots and revivals this generation consist of "lets take a popular genre/style, and shoe horn the franchise into that", instead of "lets take the fundamentals of the franchise, and try and update them for a modern era".
Oh wait, no, I don't like that at all. _________________

Using the originally leaked Syndicate PR, this post on GAF sums it up pretty well.
| Quote: | Suikoden Wars: Unleashed is the re-imagination of a classic game series from 1996 – a unique action shooter set in a fantastic medieval world where guilds fight for power.
Take on the role of Clive Johnson, a gun master and sniper, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.
• Runic Weapons: Empower your weapons with magical runes, providing added firepower on the battlefield.
• 6-Player Online Co-op: Assemble your Howling Voice Guild for global domination. A 6-player, online co-op experience like no other, with rune enhanced gameplay and 9 missions re-imagined from the original Suikoden.
• Visceral FPS Experience: Utilize an upgradable arsenal of medieval weapons, armor and gear to annihilate your enemies and harvest their magical runes for personal advancement and sinister political ambitions.
• Fantasy Fiction: Immerse yourself in the world of Suikoden Wars: Unleashed, with a world-class sci-fi story experience, written by bestselling author Richard A. Knaak. |
| Quote: | Elite: Resurrection is the re-imagination of a classic game series from 1984 – a unique action shooter set in a distant future, where mankind has reached for the stars.
Take on the role of Alex Ryder, the Empire’s most powerful agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.
• Ship Enhanced Gameplay: You control both the agent and his ship, being able to call upon its power in hectic battles to cause massive destruction on the battlefield with your upgradable Imperial Explorer starship.
• 4-Player Online Co-op: Assemble your Elite Squad for galactic domination. A 4-player, online co-op experience like no other, with ship enhanced gameplay and 9 missions re-imagined from the original Elite.
• Visceral FPS Experience: Utilize an upgradable arsenal of futuristic weapons, armor and gear to annihilate your enemies and harvest their ship technology for personal advancement and sinister imperial ambition.
• Sci-Fi Fiction: Immerse yourself in the world of Elite in the year 3200, with a world-class sci-fi story experience, written by bestselling author Orson Scott Card. |

Having only heard of Syndicate in name only, and knowing pretty much nothing about it, I decided to head over to wikipedia to get a brief overview the original games.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syndicate_%28video_game%29
The last comment in the article regarding the remake:
| Quote: | | Latest news on Neogaf sadly shows that developer Starbreeze is re-imagining the franchise as a "Visceral FPS", which will no doubt go down as one of the more pointless genre-changes in franchise name-jacking ever. |
Heh, gotta love wiki edits.
Edit: And now it's gone. That was quick.

Elite is going to be an action shooter? Really?!
It was an awesome spaceship and trading sim. That's tantamount to blasphemy to reduce it to a generic action game...

while i'm a little surprised by the genre change, i am willing to wait and see.
heh, i was about to wish for more Cyberpunk, and specifically, a a reboot of Shadowrun, forgetting for a moment that they already tried that with similarly unwanted results... _________________

Damn it!
I was a huge fan of the original on the Amiga and was really looking forward to an updated title and now I've got a generic sounding FPS set in a bleak future.

Couldn't they just have got Dawn Of War II and put a Syndicate skin on it?
That's all I wanted!

ya know after all the hand wringing and complaining about Metroid and fallout going the first person route. You think people would at least wait a bit before they declare the franchise dead. _________________

Good examples, at least for Metroid, which is perhaps the post child of genre shifts turning out to be a huge success. Fallout I wouldn't agree on, until Obsidian did what Bethesdont with New Vegas.
I think the cynicism stems from the seemingly brash obsession the modern industry has with first person shooters. Like, rather than take a look at Syndicate, and what made Syndicate unique, and try and update and rebuild it for a new generation, games like this seem like they started with 'first person shooter' as the template, and decided to squeeze and fit the franchise into that. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an example of modernisation done right, but this? At a first glance, and even an lingered stare, you'd never in a million years think 'Syndicate'.
It would be nice to be wrong, and for this to turn out like Metroid Prime did, but I'm far too cynical to expect that . Its never really a question of quality. This Syndicate reboot could be an amazing game. Its just a question of "why this?". _________________

Just waiting for someone to announce they're taking text based classic "Adventure" and turning it into a GoW clone or something.

I could buy Syndicate as an FPS.... but it can't be an outright crazy one like vanilla Quake or Bulletstorm or something. That's how the brief reads so far.
It needs tactics and a methodical approach. Half the time in Syndicate was spent laying traps for enemies. Trying to isolate and execute lone agents. Taking that opportunistic sniper shot where no one will notice =P _________________

How much of what was wrong with Fallout 3 had anything to do with it being first person though?
I mean don't get me wrong it could suck hard. And by all means jump all over it then. But at least wait till they start showing 'call of duty in the future' as the game play before you start raging. Instead of announcing that it's going to have a different view point.

That's not really what Visceral means. It's more just like a guttural and intense experience. _________________
