sorry - i didn't want to say too much when you asked before, as i was looking for them myself - but after many years of trying to find this set, i finally got one.
this was the 1993 release of the films on Laserdisc (therefore - pre-Special Edition), and the hardcover book is called "George Lucas: The Creative Impulse" and goes through his career (including aspects such as Howard the Duck).
that means Blu-Ray will be the 4th format i own the films on. _________________

Awesome!
Don't worry, I wasn't actually going to hunt them down. I like your sneaky style, though! Well played...
So do you have a laserdisc player? _________________

Nope.
the book was actually the aspect of the set i wanted most - the LDs were a bonus.
that said - i did get the set significantly lower than i've seen them go for in the past - so i was pretty lucky.

It did get a separate release in 1992, with a different cover (A painting designed to look like the traditional SW/IJ posters), but it's long out of print.
that cover, with the hologramatic print TIE Fighter/X Wing was unique to this boxset. _________________

It'll probably still September. May the 4th will just tell us what George has done this time round to fuck with the trilogy. Han will probably throw a walkie talkie at Greedo, and the words Nurf Hurter will be removed because thats our word! _________________

i've been pretty neutral about the changes GL has made over the years - i didn't like the fact he changed Anakin's ghost to Hayden Christensen, as i felt his explanation that Anakin died when Vader was born, but then surely if he redeems himself in the Return of the Jedi (and, let me point out, my thoughts on the title was always that Anakin was the Jedi who was Returning...) then he's a born-again Jedi, and should therefore be represented by Sebastien Shaw.
but this... this is probably the first time i've really thought that he's lost the plot.
the article is right, it completely takes away from the poignancy of the scene. even through the mask, there was a degree of emotion there, and now it's become almost farcical.
for the first time, i've wondered if i should stop buying the releases to stop funding GL's addiction... _________________

Did you read the rest of the post? this is the first time i've really had issue with his change... why would i have thought about not buying them previously if i was ok with the products i was buying? _________________

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The number of times that the movies have been re-released makes DBZ look good. _________________

I'm pretty certain Obs / Star Wars fans are not the only person in the world to rebuy a movie they originally had on VHS / Lazerdisc / DVD / Blu Ray / etc when it came out on a new format. What would be so hard to understand about rebuying a movie in this case?

The sheer number of times that Star Wars has been re-released. If you owned them all, you'd pretty much have a whole shelf full. Is it really neccessary to re-buy the movies every time there's a new format? _________________

I, personally, replaced all my VHSs with DVDs when I threw out my VCR. So that would be 2 versions of the same movie. If I was really into whatever movie it was, and I felt it would benefit from being in high def, its not out of the question for me to go and buy the Blu Ray. That's 3.
Throw in a Lazerdisc version he seems to have bought entirely for collection purposes (pro tip: every collection is full of "useless" shit), and you have 4.
I really don't see the problem.

There was the original on VHS, special edition on VHS, special edition on DVD, unaltered DVD, not sure which laser disc version it is, then the blue ray special special edition, then I'm sure there will be an unaltered blue ray edition after that. _________________

OK, yeah i guess i understand where you're coming from. there was an element of what DIU says to my updating, but there's also the element of the collector in it for me too.
yes, i've many copies of them. yes, i've multiple versions on different formats, but i've also got many versions in the same format.
but for the most part - it has been an upgrade process, and i don't think i have any duplicates of exactly the same thing on any one format (the remastered editions are far superior to the original CBS versions. widescreen vs. P&S too.)
Old school CBS/Fox VHS copies. (pan and scan)
Digitally Remastered Editions (not sure when these came out, around 1993 i suppose - probably the same time as the Laserdisc Definitive Edition i posted at the top of this page - widescreen)
1997 Special Edition (widescreen)
Prequels on VHS. (widescreen)
Laserdisc Definitive Edition (1993)
this is purely for collection purposes. i don't even have a laserdisc player.
Prequels on DVD.
Original Trilogy DVD Boxset.
Non-Special Edition DVDs.
and Blu-ray.
no doubt i'll get the eventual Blu-Ray3D editions, despite my claims above... i just know myself too well.
There are more versions out there that i have no interest in collecting:
1997 Special Editions on LaserDisc.
Episode 1 (and maybe 2?) on LaserDisc. (afaik, Epi3 never made it on LD.)
1997 Special Editions on Video-CD.
Episode 1 on V-CD. (and afaik, Epi2 and 3 didn't make it on V-CD)
(And the Reel-to-Reel versions.)
and this is just the core films - i do own The Clone Wars cartoon on DVD, The CGI Clone Wars on Blu-Ray, and the 2 Ewok films on DVD too - but no other format for either.
my parents did have A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back on betamax at one stage too (as well as at least one Indy Jones film - presumably Raiders) but i don't know if they were retail copies, or merely recorded from broadcast. knowing my parents, i assume the latter. _________________

The stupid part about that, is that it would have given the emperor enough time to turn his attention to vader.

So this Blu-ray set does not have the un-adultered versions contained within, I assume? I'd even settle for the last special ed. incarnation... _________________
