Yeah Obs, hence my confusion =/

Also, sugar in coffee is well wrong. No two ways about it in my mind. If you have to add sugar then you shouldn't be drinking it in the first place =P

It's just a drink and people can drink how they want. Especially if it tastes terrible because they burnt the beans!

There is a strange level of irony reading "In my mind" and then reading your avatar.

Wouldn't a Red Bull be that little bit easier?

Funnily enough, Red Bull and Coffee have very similar caffeine levels. Sometimes, coffee has more.

Well I have no idea what it is but Red Bull makes me feel way to energetic for my own good (like I'm about to have a heart attack) and coffee just wakes me up.

Coke/pepsi does nothing for me anymore....too used to it.

On another note. I do not put sugar or milk in my tea. I put cold water in it to cool it down so I can drink it straight away

This reminds me of the tomato sauce in the cupboard/fridge debate people always seem to have. I keep mine in the fridge

I enjoy the odd cup of coffee every now and then. I do avoid it though. Because if I drink it too much caffeine it burns my stomach and makes me pee alot more than usual.

Awesome thread Cro!

I'll start with a few rants/opinions.

Sugar in Coffee is WRONG. (<- note there is a full stop after this, signifying the end of the discussion)

I have no problem with adding caffeine (in coffee form or otherwise) to a sweet drink, like a hot chocolate or milo. But if you do this please refrain from calling yourself a coffee drinker.

I like to drink my coffee black. As black as Tony Abbot’s soul. My usual order is a long black, which I expect to be served as 2 shots of coffee in a mug with nothing added. However, often a ‘long black’ is interpreted as 2 shots of coffee topped up to the rim with hot water icon_sad.gif

Milk is fine in my book, provided it is prepared well. I am quite partial to a Long Mac, it is a delicious change from the usual. But as Obs said it should really be the crème not the milk that is added.

Now that that’s out of the way… Where do you Melbournites like to get your coffee from? A few of my favourites are:

Palomino - Nobody makes coffee better than failed artists and musicians. And since Northcote is a regional centre for people failling at their "true calling" it has great coffee. I havn't been there for about a year but this used to be the best coffee in Northcote.

Mixed buisness - They know how to make a long black! Great breakfast too.

Proud Mary - This place is typically pack (with wankers)! But it's worth a visit to try some of their exotic coffee and outrageous brewing methods. You can have you coffee from a french press, plunger, $40,000 esspresso machine, clover method, syphon, chemex etc etc.

Mediterranean Wholesalers - Go into the store and head to the bakery/cafe section. Get yourself a long black for less than $2!! It's pretty good too.

To me, a little bit of sugar (half a teaspoon or less) enhances, rather than detracts from, the whole coffee experience.

Too much (more than 1tsp) buries the flavour of the coffee, though.

Forgot to add one last thing. If you are buying your own coffee I suggest Growers Espresso on St Georges Rd. They have a great variety at good prices. You can even get the beans ground specifically for your prefered method of brewing.

I thought that was a standard service with any bean place.

When I was a kid, supermarkets used to have coffee grinding machines so you could grind the beans yourself. Good times.

So I've come to the conclusion this 'Long Macchiato" I've been having is a double shot with a hint of milk added, though I probably should ask them.

What do you guys use to make coffee at home? Mum likes to use one of those things you put on the stove. I prefer the taste when I use the plunger though.
Love getting up around 930-10 on the weekend grinding some beans and making a huge cup for myself.

I use one of these:

I have 2 good bialetti ones (a 2 cup and a 6 cup), plus a couple of crappier ones which don't really get used. The trick to making a good coffee in these bad boys is to have very low heat, so the water takes along time to come up through the beans, and to not let the bottom chamber go dry. Turn the heat off just before it starts to sputter and hiss.

Even though I drink 1 coffee a day but I wouldn't mind a coffee machine of some sort at work. Some of us even tried to get a rented one if there was enough interest. Sadly there weren't as more people were willing to drink instant stuff icon_sad.gif .

O well, I'm supporting a nice local cafe business who knows my order now icon_smile.gif .

In regards to sugar in coffee, I wouldn't drink it everyday (sugar is the reason) but it will be a lie for me to stay I don't enjoy having them in coffee but I am a bit picky. I will only drink what I find is decent sugary coffee but in Iced Coffee form. Malaysian Iced White Coffee for the nice light-medium taste coffee with sweetened condensed milk (I have a soft spot for condensed milk) or if I really wanted to have a coffee/sugar kick that day, Vietnamese Iced White Coffee where you have heavy condensed milk taste and heavy bitter coffee taste but I rarely do that because its heavy of both taste buds that leaves me felt this unbalanced taste in my mouth. Otherwise will go to cafe or Starbucks, anywhere that the Iced Coffee isn't pre-made since I don't want sugar in it. I am a weird person.

Anyone went adventurous and had coffee where the bean came out of an animal's rear end? I haven't tried it (I'm a wuss) but I heard there's a place in Sydney that does it for $9.50 or something.

Yeah that's the thing mum uses. It takes a damn long time to make, so I assume it's on low heat. I just find the flavour isn't as strong as it is when I plunger it.
I think she may load up on the milk a bit too much, though.
