It's a style of anime that nobody really seems to make anymore. |
Care to share and elaborate on this "style"? I'm curious to know what this style is in Black Lagoon, which isn't being made anymore. _________________ 「貧乳はステータスだ!希少価値だ!」 - 泉 こなた

For once I agree with you, I was amazed at how badly they screwed up a few key events from the game... _________________

Really can't wait for the dub. |
Yeah, she sounds almost bored. Whilst in the english dub she sounds full of energy. _________________

It reminds me a lot of older anime from the 1980s and early 1990s where there was quite a lot of violence and the stories centred very much around action rather than characterisation. Shows like Dirty Pair, Bubblegum Crisis, City Hunter, Cyber City Oedo and Armitage III, for example. For me, stuff like that is what anime should really all be about, instead of all this lovey-dovey sakura-petals-and-snow high-school lesbian crap that passes for anime these days. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I'm in the opinion that Revy is suppose to sound like she's almost bored. That's her character. Having said that, I've yet to watch Roberta's Blood Trail so I'm not sure if her voice and mood is different from the previous series. Personally, I dislike the English audio from 2 series.

Not that I do not understand what you mean, as I too enjoy that style you describe. Violence and action-centric, that Black Lagoon is. However, what makes this series successful is because of the characterisation.
In addition, I can't subscribe to your point of view that "that's what anime should be about". That was the style back then in the 80s/90s and it's the trend during then. Trends changes, just like we don't dress like disco 80's for instance. Besides, most anime titles derived from mangas. Mangas that are serialised and these mangas are drawn based on what sells in tha Japanese market today. Unlike some games which do target the market outside of Japan, mangas and animes are products that caters primarily for the Japanese market. _________________ 「貧乳はステータスだ!希少価値だ!」 - 泉 こなた

I agree, the characters of Black Lagoon are one of the reasons I do love it so much. The show just wouldn't be as intense as it is without characters such as Balalaika etc.
As for your other point. people can obviously have whatever preference they like when it comes to anime. However I do find it amusing when an individual from western society proclaims to know what anime should be about. _________________

Speaking of violence in anime, what is the most disturbing anime you guys have seen?
For me it would be a very close tie with Narutaru, Elfen Lied and Perfect Blue.

I was raised on Manga Entertainment, so that's what got me into anime, and a lot of it is really just nostalgia (I do watch stuff other than action/violence, as anyone who's been to Manifest over the past two years will attest), however I'm just a big action fan in general (I love action movies and action-oriented TV shows as well), so that's the kind of anime I prefer to watch.

Texhnolyze. Just such a bleak, depressing yet entirely brilliant series. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Elfen Lied
I watched half of it in 2007
couldn't digest the damn thing
Finished the other half last year
No anime has made me feel worse, ******* depressing and miserable. _________________

Elfen Lied has a really sickly atmosphere. Everything about it feels rotten, it's hard to put into words. It's an unforgettable series.
Texhnolyze I haven't seen. Gonna have to check that one out now!

Elfen Lied for me too. I think it was fantastic though.
The gore did make it hard to watch at times, but the themes of the anime were depressing as well, and they were portrayed very well. It's one of the few animes I have seen that really made me think.
It has the worst dialogue of any anime I have seen though, in Japanese and the English dub. _________________

episode 4 of Dantalian no Shoka, some crazy, disturbing **** there if psychotic violence is your thing. I like the anime show though, it's being scripted well even if it has a Kino's Journey type melancholy about it. _________________

Watched the first Senjou no Valkyria 3/Valkyria Chronicles 3 OVA on youtube (though it's a spoiler, seeing as it's set mid way through the game). Shame that we won't be seeing the 3rd game though _________________

Watched all of K-On seasons 1 and 2. Oh my gosh it's so good. I was so sad when it ended but pleased to hear there's a movie coming out and that there may be a third season.
I searched for years for an anime exactly like this - a spiritual successor to Azumanga Daioh. And I finally found it... Because someone bought the manga in the newest purchase and I thought the cover looked nice so I googled it. THANK YOU ZACHG!!! _________________

If you want a spiritual successor to Azumanga, may I recommend Nichijou. The manga format is quite similar to Azumanga, as in series of short skits and the comedy is quite similar. It's been recently animated and Nichijou is still currently airing in Japan and there's about 20+ eps so far.
If you like comedy anime in general, I'd also recommend Yuru Yuri, been enjoying that of recent, its quite funny.

I also recommend Minami-Ke and School Rumble if you liked Azumanga Daioh.
Lately I've picked up reading MPD Psycho after watching Takashi Miike's adaption. An amazing read so far. I'd love to see it turned into an anime one day.

Elfen Lied is my favourite anime. I love it. I have watched it so much I ca recite every episode.
Though the manga is a bit harder to stomach as it continues on and is a lot more graphic!
For me it would be Le Portrait de Petit Cossette. I donno why but I just found it hard to watch and I didn't enjoy it at all. Yuck. _________________

I found some of the violence in Higurashi (When They Cry) a bit disturbing, mainly because it's happening to young children. _________________

Oh, I've been meaning to watch that one. It sounds pretty twisted from what I've heard .
Episode 21 of Steins;Gate had a very good build up. The next episode is going to pretty awesome. The series is nearly finished (only 3 eps left) and I've enjoyed it quite a bit, better than I was expecting.
I also just finished watching Madoka Magica. I'll admit I've never seen a magical girl anime before as it hasn't been a genre that's interested me. Well seeing as people were rating this one so highly I thought I'd give it a watch. What can I say, absolutely brilliant. A dark and complex anime that had some very thought provoking scenes. It's hard to talk about it without going into spoilers but the last few episodes and the revelation of a certain fluffy character were some the best twists I've seen in an anime. The animation is stunning for a TV series, in particular the trippy imagery SHAFT created for the "Witches". I'm becoming a big fan of their works, they put out some pretty interesting and unique anime.

It's not really a magical girl anime, rather it takes the magical girl formula and subverts it XD For real magical girl I recommend the first 2 seasons of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. _________________
