|
|
|
|
| Quote: | If recent rumours from a fellow gaming website are to be believed, Nintendo is planning a drastic redesign of the 3DS, and may opt for dropping the 3D component of the device altogether due to the poor reception it has received so far.
Coming courtesy of French website 01Net, they are claiming that the redesigned 3DS ‘radically tones down’ the 3D aspect of the device and that it could lead to an entire rebranding of Nintendo’s latest handheld. Since many have been reluctant to play with the 3D technology switched on this could well be a good decision on Nintendo’s part – people simply haven’t adopted to the 3DS like Nintendo hoped, after all.
While you should take these rumours with a pinch of salt as there’s no confirmation as of yet, Eurogamer did a little digging and found out that 01Net actually broke specs of PS Vita/Wii U before their release dates, so there could be some truth to this information.
This information comes after the recent drastic price drop of the 3DS, which Nintendo had to implement after widely declining worldwide sales of the device. It is also worth noting however that game developers are still making 3D games – whether this is to be the last batch, however, still remains to be seen.
Hopefully we’ll get an official announcement from Nintendo soon enough, and you’ll be sure to get all the info you need right here on Manatank.com as we get it. |
If this is true I will be very pissed off. I bought the 3DS for 3D. If it weren't for 3D then I would never have bought it.
To me this would be the dumbest thing any of the 3 companies have done. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

This would be stupid in my opinion. A lot of people come into work originally interested in the 3DS because it is in 3D. Whether or not they play using the 3D later isn't that important.. But the initial purchase.. It's 3D that pushes most people I've sold to, to get it.
Otherwise it's just another DS. I still have a DS Lite and didn't see the point upgrading it. I was going to for a 3DS but without 3D, no point. _________________

These rumours started stir a couple of days ago and from what I've been reading 'tone down the 3D aspect' has meant that it will be there, but it will no longer be the core selling point.
Think of it as transitioning to be more like PS Move rather than a Wiimote. It will be there and for those that want to use it it will work fine, it just won't feature as heavily.
I'm more interested in the rumoured hardware redesign coming next year which will apparently bring a second circle pad the the control layout. Vooks _________________

I think that's exactly what they're trying to avoid with the new 3DS (and the new marketing to go along with it), to be honest.
Also, I wholly doubt the 3D will be removed completely. It was a French article translated to English, and I believe that the person who Gamesta quoted misinterpreted the quote. What I read from it was that the new console's marketing will not have a strong focus on 3D, treating it as the nice little extra that it really is (which would fall in line with NoA's new ad campaign). I mean, dropping the 3D completely doesn't really make any sense at all... _________________

I hope not. I went against EVERY impule and got one recently (was able to get the ambassader registraion, and the $250 price point) despite region locking, battery life and NO must have-title forseen in the next 6 months based largely on the prce drop and this recent (and well argued) article http://au.gear.ign.com/articles/118/1186014p1.html
To have these rumours suggesting that the lite will drop before any decent titles do makes my investment now an almost complete waste (I am promised Yoshis island, but Im not sure that was worth $250)
On the other side of the coin, I have convinced myslef I'll import a US one when the states-exclusive releases come (Devil Survivor Im looking at you) and the new design comes.......
Hopefully it remains a rumour and this is in-fact a re-branding exercise to emphaise thats its not ONLY 3D and we some decent releases coming faster. e.g. If pokemon black/white wasn't deigned with 3d in mind for a "grey" I don't know what was........ _________________

If they dropped the 3D, wouldn't they then have to rename/re-brand it?

gargh nintendo!!!!!
I know there's no games out at the moment but at least make it region free before you even think about toning down the main selling point

There is no way that Nintendo will drop the 3D from the 3DS. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just playing into the hands of the people who start these rumours. As for toning it down, there's no way they'd do that to the actual console (what would the point be?), maybe they'll focus less on it in their marketing though. If I were them, I'd play up the fact that it's the successor to the DS first, and mention the 3D effect second. _________________

Decent game library over innovation.
3D is great for some people but from what I read, a lot of people eventually turn it off. I don't think this should be of Nintendo's main concern though because why would you expect people to always play in 3D when many people are more comfortable in 2D.
Having a phat DS at launch and hating it for its lack of backlight (same with Advance), I have learnt to not get a Nintendo handheld at launch and I won't be 100% surprise if the rumours was true since they aren't exactly getting it right the first time with their handhelds of late so naturally I didn't get a 3DS at launch since I ain't falling into a trap again. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

And it's not just the discomfort of playing in 3D for some people. Maintaining the sweet spot in a moving vehicle is almost impossible. Not to mention that fact that turning off the 3D all together can almost double your battery life... which is still pretty abysmal. _________________

The 3D itself is a massive gimmick, it does nothing except strain your eyes and reduce battery life. It's nothing innovative and does hardly anything to improve on the gameplay. It would have been better had Nintendo put more effort into this, it's not looking too good for the 3DS.

Have you got one? It looks stunning and most people's eyes get used to it very quickly.

I do have one, and I just pop on 3D during certain parts of the game for a few seconds then switch it right off. It's too much. _________________

Yeah I'm with Zero. I love Ninty, love my 3DS, but I just find it impractical to play with the 3D on. So I find I slide it on for cutscenes, etc. but turn it off when in gameplay.
I don't care too much anyway. I'd pay $300 for this with or without 3D. _________________ WII CODE: 5880 0837 7756 4228

even having it slightly on I find I lose the effect if my hands move a little left or right.
P.S. Jarrod, you haven't re-added me dude! Esposch cut me, cut me deep, but I can learn to live without him on my friends list. YOU on the other hand... _________________ WII CODE: 5880 0837 7756 4228

Yeah I know, 100% is overkill, but even at around 50% or lower, it strains the eyes after a while.
Do I has you guys on my 3DS? O_o _________________

Zero I added you (and everyone else on the friend code thread) but my friend code changed as I had to get my 3DS replaced. So currently you and MOST everyone else is sitting on my list as a provisionally registered friend.
My new code is 1203 9360 8742. Pls add the frack out of me. Unless you don't like cool dudes with low to moderate gaming skills. _________________ WII CODE: 5880 0837 7756 4228
