I know that one particular Queensland scholarship is taxed, i checked the website, but is there anything I should know? |
Don't know if this will help but the ATO has a tool to assist you in determining whether a scholarship is taxable. Never thought about scholarships being taxable tbh. I always thought it'd be exempt income. Then again I never thought the ATO would have such a tool to tell you whether your scholarship was taxable...
ATO scholarship taxable tool thingy _________________ Recently Finished: Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky (8/10)

First time doing tax and going to see an accountant to do it but I'll ask here anyway.
I'm a sales person in computers, gaming, software, mobile phones and printers. I have been told by fellow sales people and a few people I know at Sony that I am able to claim Console and Game purchases laptop and computer purchases and my mobile phone due to research. Is that correct? :S claiming Video games?

Assuming they are correct, you'd need to keep a diary of when you used them for work purposes vs personal use and work out the ratio of the two. Somehow I doubt they're claimable though. _________________

Research? As in Work-related self-education. If so, no.

I guess if you put it loosely, yes.
ATO - Work-related Self-education expenses "You are improving specific skills or knowledge used in your current employment." and Work-related expenses - tools and equipment (Other tools and equipment section) is my guess.
Since you seem to be claiming a lot and the ATO is quite observant with the Work-related expense section, make sure to keep your receipt for 5 years and come up with a very convincing reason why you are claiming these (so you are not off-guard and gave them an unconvincing reason, I've heard it happened when people are unprepared). _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

I will have all the receipts they are all kept in the system at work therefore I can never lose them I have a valid argument for each purchase.
eg. Customer comes in wanting to buy an Xbox for there son they ask me questions on how the online is what games are great for it etc etc.. how am I to make a good decision if I have no Xbox or none of the games. If I lose the sale and sales after that I could lose my job if I get the sale and hold an outstanding sales record then I can be promoted which pretty much relies on how much research I have done on the product and how much time I have spent using it.

Just submitted my tax return and judging by the estimates, it's looks like I'll be getting a pretty big return _________________

It shouldn't take more than two weeks from the day you lodged your return at the very latest, regardless of how you filed it (paper, Etax, via accountant, etc). They ask to wait 30 days at the latest though. If you want, you can always try calling 13 28 65 to see where they're up to with your refund.
You can find more information via this link. _________________ Recently Finished: Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky (8/10)

I've got a guy who does my taxes who always does a really good job.
He is located in Frankston South right near Melbourne but does a lot of it through mail and discusses it over phone calls. If anyone needs someone to do there taxes, PM me and i'll give you his details.
A few years back I did some eTax estimates and it said I was to get $600 back. I decided to use his company and he guesstimated $2600 back but in the end got me just under $3500 back. He has since gone solo and works from home and really gives that personal touch, which is great for people like me who don't understand taxes.
And this isn't a plug or anything. I just know how daunting taxes are and a good accountant really makes a difference. _________________

Just did mine.
Went well, will get a phone call next week asking me more details.
A good tax accountant will ask you questions in which to maximise your return, while a bad one will expect you to tell them the information (which often leaves a lot of important infirmation out). True story. _________________

Centerlink should have sent you a payment summary with all the necessary info. Might need to give them a call. _________________

Your Centrelink info might be available via pre-filling in e-tax. Austudy was the only thing I had in my pre-fill this year. _________________

I think you mean last financial year (1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011). This financial year started in July 2011 and doesn't end until June next year
Though, seems like I made the same mistake in my own post above _________________
