i've also got a launch boxed version (although i doubt i still have the box, instead just the jewel-case and book), but i've only ever played it without the unofficial patch - i wasn't just tempted to buy it again though, i did buy it again.
I've not played it with the unofficial patch though - i don't remember if i ever finished it though.
and +1 for the hotel. it's remained one of my favourite level sets for a loooooong time - i hope it stands up to nostalgia. _________________

| Jarrod wrote: | Its a first/third person role playing game set in a dark, supernatural universe with a modern world backdrop. There's a heavy emphasis on story and characters, with mutliple plot arcs and twists. Characters are among the best written characters I've ever had the joy of talking to in a videogame, as the writing flows naturally.
You, the player, can chose from a variety of vampire 'clans', each with their own powers and specialisations, and play the game how you like. Many quests can be completed simply by talking, seducing and intimidating (if you have the skills), hacking and picking locks, sneaking, or just guns blazing. Combat is frankly a little bit ****, but its tolerable if you stick to a certain style with a dash of another. There's melee, firearms, magic (blood powers), and stealth kills.
There's also a few points in the game that are clearly unfinished, including an awful grind through the sewers, and a couple of unfriendly boss fights. Troika ran out of time and Activision and Valve screwed them, but the most recent fan patches not only fix most of the bugs but also restore a lot of missing content.
Bloodlines excels in being one of the most ambitious RPGs ever made, simply for how open the quests are. Its not an RPG that tries to hook you with tons and tons of loot, or grinding for experience points, or other such tropes of the genre. It hooks you with a rich story, awesome characters, and wonderful quests.
Also its five freakin' dollars. |
Nice. Here's my take on the game (from the What Game are you Playing? thread) for a slightly different perspective/additional info.
| Furianshi wrote: | This is an old favourite of mine that I never got to finish. In fact, my very first post in this thread was about Bloodlines, from the last time I was playing it.
Was a bit of a pain to get it to display in widescreen this time. Before, I was using XP and there was a patch for widescreen resolutions, but the patch doesn't work in Windows 7, so a little dll hex editing was required. It's all sorted now though and it's running well so far, and updated with the unofficial 7.4 patch.
For those unfamiliar with it (if you are familiar with the game, a) you're a legend, and b) feel free to skip to the last paragraph), Bloodlines uses Valve's Source Engine. It was buggy as hell on release and then not long after, the developers, Troika Games, went broke and shut down (I don't think Bloodlines sold all that well, despite some good reviews - I remember Hyper gave it like 90%). They managed to release a single patch, but there was still many unfixed bugs. The game had a strong cult following though and has received many unofficial updates fixing most of the game's problems.
Bloodlines is a Western RPG. Think Elder Scrolls, but with vampires and set in Los Angeles. It's based on White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade universe, so no out in the daylight, sparkly vampire love stories here.
You get to choose what clan your character is at the start, they all have different strengths and weaknesses. I've chosen a female Malkavian again, they're a bit nutty and I find the dialogue choices to be interesting.
Gameplay consists of doing missions for different people. Your character uses guns and melee weapons, as well as choose from a variety of spell-like vampiric abilities (the abilities you get with your character depends on what clan you chose, although some are common amongst all clans), such as temporary invisibility and dementia (that's a Malkavian-only ability which causes the target to go a bit nuts. They can laugh uncontrollably and even turn on their friends, while you slip by avoiding combat).
There's also a stealth element, lock picking and computer hacking. Your vampire needs to feed, which they can do by necking humans in places such as dark alleyways or corners of nightclubs. There's also rats around if you're desperate. It's important in this game to uphold the masquerade - keep the fact that your character is a vampire secret. Otherwise you get chased by vampire-hunters and the other vampires get pissed off with the exposure.
Anyway, awesome game, hopefully I get to finish it this time. One thing I've noticed since last time; there is a helluva lot of loading. It doesn't really detract too much from what is a seriously good RPG, but in this day and age, it's very noticeable. |
How is the steam version with getting it to run in widescreen? Any improvements there?
PS - that was a very nice gesture Nic_231. Btw, I tried adding you on XBL, because I like nice people with good taste in games, but it says your gamertag is invalid. Maybe you could add me.

Hey guys, as Admeinster hasn't responded to my steam invite I can't send him his game and the deal is coming to a close. I am afraid I will have to give his copy away to another person (sorry mate).
So, next person to ask for it, 100 posts, positive rating ect.
Put your Steam name in the post as well, or your email if you would prefer. _________________ http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997175012

Have mucked around for the last 30 minutes or so, and I can't get the game working. I am running on a 64-bit system and finally came here and followed Jarrod's advice beut still getting the following error:
Memory Engine Error
Available memory less than 15MB!!! -1
It was the same before the 7.6b patch. The only stuff I could find looked way too complicated involving changing code etc, not my cup of tea (dll hex editing or something I believe? Didn't bother trying to read most of it). I couldn't change the compaibility back to xp either, there were errors also.
The reg .exe file had errors also when patching the resolution fix.
Don't think I'll get the chance to play Nic_231's gift

I had a few problems getting it to work properly in Windows 7. I can't remember exactly, but I know getting widescreen to work was a headache, requiring the use of a hex editor. It all looks daunting, but I remember thinking it was a lot easier than it first seemed.
Without having played the game before though, I can understand people giving up on it.

All you have to do is download the unofficial patch, install it and then run a resolution patch to get it going without any problems. And thats on the steam version. _________________

Yeah I installed the v7.4 unofficial patch and tried the WS patch (tried a variety of compatibility modes with admin rights etc), but it doesn't work for everyone apparently. It's worked for me in the past on a different computer, but this time it didn't, and I had to use the manual solution.
I'm still using my retail copy.
