Maybe South Australia's move has confused the ACL and they're still not sure what's happened. _________________

That seems pretty clear. No loosening and no increase in the number and types of games available. We've been snookered. They're just going to reclassify 'high violence' games as R18+. L4D2 would be classified as having 'extreme violence' and be banned still. I'm betting on it. This isn't a victory. They've won by blatant skullduggery.
Edit: Also, if what I suspect has happened has, then I have a monster of an article to write. It means our side made a massive tactical mistake, and one we should pay strong attention to in the future.

I'd still rather listen to what O'Conner is saying and not the ACL. I hope you're wrong, but we'll see. _________________

So do I. So do I. But the ACL is giving up way too easily here. That's what's scaring me.

Conversely, they may be giving up on the back of faltering public support, remembering that public support is their effective life blood to remain relevant, if the ACL had no recourse to involve themselves in the apparent blocking of these alterations then, like any body that deals with politics, they auto flip to the affirmative to get on the back of the "joy" and say they helped. As always the devil will be in the details, but it's presumptuous to assume that our side made a tactical blunder when it's still very much real that their side may have a larger one and it's time for a measured dose of acceptance.
Plus, even if it was a tactical blunder by us for an end game scenario, progress is still made to deliver a framework for further pitching (an R18+ rating to then ask for increased traffic / volume) so it's still progress made.

Whether this is true or not, it's still an improvement on the current classification system, and, being human, the classification board might be a little bit more lenient on borderline bannable games, since they'll receive an R rating, rather than MA. It would also open the door a little to changing the wording of each rating group, to allow more games.

So ABC24 this morning is all over it - "instead of a 18+ rating shouldn't we just ban these violent games - especially give that we know from his facebook page that the person involved in the Norway incident played violent games like modern warfare and world of warcraft" - yeah....we have a long way to go...... _________________

It sucks now, but this attitude will dissipate over time. Gaming is still a relatively new entertainment medium, at least compared to music, film, television and literature. We still exist in a time where many people never grew up with videogames, and the industry was nowhere near as widespread as it is today, so the idea of videogaming being just another form of entertainment for everybody hasn't quite ingrained itself on the collective human psyche.
It will eventually though. _________________

In brendan Oconnor's defence (federal minister for justice) he did respond to each of these questions by linknig games with movies in his answers such as "I don't think we can say games and movies made someone like that take those options" _________________

I can't see any changes apart from it allows video games to have a R18+ rating. This allows them to have high impact. Though I don't see anything that will move up any games from MA to R, unless they come out and say, "Over the last 16 years we have been incorectly classifying games".

This is a good thing, having news question the government's decision and it was asked from more of a nuetral view point than it shows in your post.

side note to make the article slightly more presentable 'i before e except after c (and a few exceptions)' receive*
Anyway I'm glad we got this. Though still concerned about refused titles still possibly being refused. I also hope this allows young gamers to appreciate non-FPS genres more. I think at the rate we were going by making stuff like CoD accessible we were becoming a nation of people only playing FPS because I think the addiction started early in age :/ _________________

Ah well I don't believe on what I have read any good is going to come out of it (sorry glass half empty).
Government has made an R18+ rating which will appease the masses but unfortunately serve a lesson to adults who want games that the government is still not interested in the concept.
My only hope somewhere down the track as this generation of dumb ass politicians fade away maybe the next generation coming through will have more digital internet sense so to speak.

The ACL is merely trying to save face, because it is factually inaccurate to assert that the classification guidelines won't be loosened - The draft guidelines released several months ago are very similar to the current guidelines in force for films. A few amendments have been made since then, however the basis is the same. These so called "uber violent" games almost entirely consist of obscure Japanese titles such as Rapeplay, which are entirely out of the mainstream and would remain illegal anyway due to being child abuse material (as they should).
Adding to that, most of the "extremely violent mainstream games" are already available uncensored in Australia. Splatterhouse, Dead Space, GTA IV (released uncut on PC and a patch released for consoles), Madworld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Rising etc. Need I go on? The vast majority of violent games are not banned or censored in Australia at the moment.
But when all is said and done, there is no reason why adults shouldn't be able to access whatever video games they please. There is no reputable scientific evidence to prove that violent games are detrimental to society. Assumptions and conjecture are not good enough. Nor are obscure correlative links, which is what most of these so called "studies" consist of.
The ACL are just extremists and should be given no air time what so ever, because they've shown that they're incapable of producing a logical, fact based argument that doesn't come down to their religious bias.
Oh and by the way, I often see uncensored overseas copies of games sitting in EB or JBHIFI on the preowned shelf. So even importing or downloading isn't always necessary. Banning will never work.

We would have got fully uncensored Left 4 Dead 2 if Valve/EA/whoever submit the content document to the Classification's Board hadn't referred to the zombies as 'infected/diseased humans'. A stupid blunder to be sure. _________________
