Blizzard are known to use their art more than their tech, so any modern setup with a 580 will likely run Diablo 3 on max without a single issue.

The taxing games to look at would be Crysis 2 DX11, Crysis Warhead, Witcher 2 and Metro: 2033, with Metro 2033 and Crysis 2 DX11 being the ultra taxing and to fully max require a hefty amount of power.

Diablo III wont be taxing. Blizzard/Valve like lots of people being able to play their games, not a select few.

I have a factory OC'd GTX 570, and performs extremely well at 1080p. Crysis 2 DX11 is the only thing that brings it down a peg (well, and Metro, but that kills everything), and even I still average 30 - 40 fps.

So yes, a GTX 580 will allow you to max out stuff like Crysis 2 and The Witcher 2 (sans ubersampling like 99% of the population) at 1080p with silky smooth framerates.

Crossfire 2 6990s and then laugh in Metro's face. icon_razz.gif

Good lord, Nvidia is dominating AMD in that game.

I did the math and it's actually quite surprising how equal they seem to be at the top end when it comes to value for money. I used the Crysis 2 DX11 benchmark results and MSY's current Asus videocard pricings and this is what I came up with:

4GB HD6990 ($794) = $12.22/fps
3GB GTX590 ($879) = $12.21/fps

Mid-high end seems to be a bit different, with Nvidia offering better performance AND value for money...

2GB HD6970 ($368) = $10.22/fps
1.3GB GTX570 ($368) = $8.56/fps

And incase JM and canetoad were wondering...

1GB HD6950 ($259) = $7.84/fps
1.5GB GTX580 ($524) = $10.49/fps

Take all of that with a grain of salt though. That's just how it is when factoring in the guru3d Crysis 2 DX11 benchmark results, and assuming they only used the Asus versions of each card (highly unlikely).

Edit: actually, looking at those prices, and the performance differences in the crossfire link from my last post, a single 580 costs about the same as 2 6950s, and when run in crossfire you get a decent performance improvement over the 580 (in the Metro DX11 test the 580 averaged 33fps and the 2 6950s averaged 50fps).

Is that right? I'm assuming Radeon HD 6950 CFX means 2 separate cards running in Crossfire...

The main factor in value/performance is really the drivers, as well as game optimistion. AMD drivers are a bit fiddly and not quite as reliable as nVidia drivers. Then it comes down to how well the game has been optimised. Sometimes games are built with AMD in mind, and sometimes nVidia. Dragon Age 2 DX11 was literally broken on nVidia cards for awhile there, and for Crysis 2 I'm pretty sure Crytek spent a lot of time tweaking the DX11 patch for nVidia hardware.

Then you've got issues with crossfire/sli. Sometimes games are buggy with dual cards when they should get a huge performance boost. Witcher 2 doesnt like crossfire very much I dont think.

Thats PC hardware for you. Metro is an oddball when benchmarking. Turn off the high quality DOF and watch your framerate skyrocket, even with everything else maxed.

Yeah and there's that. Don't worry, I was just bored. Like I said, take with a grain of salt. icon_wink.gif

I've always had the opinion that AMD is high maintenance, but with that maintenance comes a lot of control and power. I'm always keen on tweaking and screwing around with my 6990s settings and sometimes I get some utterly ridiculous performance gains.

NVIDIA are certainly more safe to go, as usually their drivers are straight out reliable and just work. They're both great though, and no gamer loses if they go either company at the moment.

So I've received two quotes today. One from Umart and one from a local computer shop.

Basically for slightly better specs (better mobo and better brand 6950) Umart quoted $1479 with shipping. Local place quote - $1902 pick up. I figured if it was $100-$150 extra I might just go with the local lot to make it a lot easier warranty wise, but $430 definitely sends my money south.

Now to wait till next week when my tax money comes through so I can order this thing.

If you're looking for other options, there's always MSY

Or, choose your own from their parts list (right-click, save as)

If you order through slackscreek@msy.com.au they use fastway couriers to ship it all up here. I've bought stuff off them plenty of times and never had a problem. Actually, I recently ordered parts for a complete PC and because a couple of things weren't in stock (the PSU and monitor), I had to pick alternatives and the delivery was free. If they charge for delivery though, it's quite reasonable, I doubt you'd be paying more than $100.

Maybe ask if the 6950 will fit in the case if you decide to email them.

That's right. In my opinion 6950 CF is the best value/performance set up you can get at the moment. Same performance as a 6990 essentially but still gives you room to overclock the cards a fair amount. Compared to Nvidia, they're up there with the GTX570 SLI yet cost $200 less.

Anyone got any recommendations for a cheap HTPC? It'd be great if it's capable of playing 720 MKVs. Also prefer it be able to run downloads overnight and such.

I think my 1.5yr old Asrock Ion 330 has cooked itself. The Windows kernel (System process) is constantly using 50% of the CPU even after a format and it can barely play low res DivX/XviD files without skipping.

Any old and cheap dual core won't have an issue playing 720p MKVs. I ripped this build from Whirlpool's PC suggestions:

Case: BL641 mATX LOW PROFILE BLACK – $96.00 WxHxD 330x96x365 mm w/o Front Panel

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 260 – $69.00 dual AM3; 3.2Ghz; 65W TDP

Motherboard: ASRock 880GMH-LE/USB3 AM3 Motherboard – $79.00

RAM: Corsair VS2GB1333D3 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 – $19.00

HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB HD502HJ – $39.00

GPU: On-board ATI Radeon HD 4250

Optical Drive: Lite-On IHAS324 24x DVDRW – $27.00

TV Tuner: Leadtek WinFast DTV1000 S PCI – $28.00 remote control; low profile bracket

PSU: Included with case

Total: $357

Thanks Pagan, I always forget about that Whirlpool thread. That's a dirt cheap PC. I might even be able to salvage bits out of the Ion330 to make it even cheaper.

So I've decided to buy a new PC for some reason, and would like to get the master race's opinions on this.

CPU: i7-2600K
Motherboard: G-B Z68XP-UD3
CPU cooler: Coolermaster 212+
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws-X DDR3 1600 G (4Gx2)
SSD: Patriot Inferno 2.5” 60G
HDD: Samsung 2TB
Optical: LG Blu-ray
Graphics: G-B 1280M GTX570
PSU: Coolermaster GX Power 750
Case: Coolermaster SGC2000 Storm Scout
Monitor: LG E2360V
Keyboard: MS Retail SideWinder Gaming X4 keyboard
Already got a mouse.

Comes in at roughtly $1700 from MSY, with a few extra fans etc. It's total overkill since I'm mostly a console gamer, but, whatever. Coz I can and all that.

Will this all fit together properly? I think it should, though it might be a tight fit for the GPU. Does anybody have any suggestions of components that might be better value for money? Any terrible pieces of kit in there that I should be avoiding?

Ask the guys at MSY, but yeah it will be a tight fit from what I've read (case gpu gap/270mm = GTX570/270mm). Out of the other cases they have, I know a TT Armor+ MX won't fit your gpu, and the one I'm looking at for my next PC, the Fractal Design Define XL, it easily fits a 6990, so will definitely have no problem with a 570. It's $100 more than the Storm Scout, but it's supposed to have really good airflow and is lined with sound-dampening foam.

I'd send them an email though, just ask which cases will easily fit your gpu. Then out of those, google for reviews and see what they look like and go from there.

CoolerMaster 690 II Advanced is a good mid range case for about $115, a far better case than the Storm Scout.

If you can find another $20-30 then I'd also recommend getting an Antec, Corsair or Silverstone power supply. The CoolerMaster GX 750W isn't terrible but it's pretty average. It delivers 60A compared to 62A from other more reputable brands and it's only 80 plus standard rather than bronze or silver. The Silverstone Strider 750W has 62A on the 12V, 80 plus silver and is 100% modular. Corsair TX-750W is also good but not modular.

So I recently have received my tax back and have decided to put it into upgrading my computer, I’ve had these current specs for a few years now and while it hasn’t been really having too many problems I feel it might be good to upgrade it soon for the incoming awesome titles being released at the end of this year. I thought I might check with the Master Race here to see how I can go about updating my hardware and what to get. Here are the specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ (2 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
Memory: 4GB RAM
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Mobo: ASUS M2N SLI

Hopefully thats at least the main specs you guys are wondering about, if there is anything else you guys need let me know.

What's your budget?

I would throw in an AMD 955 CPU. It's backwards compatible so you can avoid having to upgrade your entire motherboard. It's a nice low-mid range CPU that has no trouble with games of today. Just make sure you throw an aftermarket cooler on it because the fan it comes with is shockingly loud.

Your memory is fine.

I recommend upgrading to a 560Ti or 6950. Both are a sweet spot for price and performance. What's your monitor resolution?

Was looking to spend about $500ish but if there are some much better suggested products I can go a little higher.

Thanks for the suggestions I was hoping Id be able to just upgrade only a few products instead of just completely redoing the entire computer. Usually most of the time when I run the system through canyourunit.com its usually the CPU and graphics card that don't do as well.

Monitor is n LG W2343T runs at 1920x1080

Also by the looks of it my mobo is only an AM2/AM2+ compatible so i'm guessing if i end up looking at the AMD955 id have to upgrade the mobo to a AM3 compatible one right?

So I'm looking to build a PC exclusively for gaming (will use my Mac for everything else), and if I did I'd want to be able to max pretty much every game and get a constant frame rate of 40-60 if I can. The 6950 seems to be able to do this, so is this a good build? Taken from Whirlpool.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K $214
Mobo: Asrock Z68 Pro3 B3 $135
RAM: G.Skill-NT 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1333 $59
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $59
GPU: 1GB AMD Radeon HD6950 $226
Case: Antec 300 $59
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 520C $67 (BYO power cord)
ODD: LiteOn DVD burner $25
CPU HSF: Coolermaster Universal Hyper 212+ $33
Intake Fans: 2x Gelid Silent 12 120mm fans $14

What's your screen resolution going to be?

Edit - and by max as in turn everything on (like tessellation?) and max out on drawing distance etc?
