I couldn't find mention of this on here yet so I thought I'd bring it up.
Here's the link to the article I read on IGN about it:
http://au.games.ign.com/articles/118/1182354p1.html

and also a follow up article:
http://au.wii.ign.com/articles/118/1182480p1.html

As a NSW resident this doesn't effect me but I know there weill be many people on Palgn that would be affected.

Plain packaging does not work.

It makes kids more interested.

Wow, um. On one hand, kind of seems like they're missing the point. On the other hand, if it's between this and not having an R rating at all, I'm all for it, at least the games that shouldn't be banned won't be (there at least).

Bringing in an R rating if the other states don't isn't going to do much in the case of censorship, though. I highly doubt publishers are going to bother distributing two versions for the same country.

Should bring it in across the nation. Too much gets passed off as MA 15+ and its not like parents couldn't buy it for their child if they deemed it appropriate. The whole rating thing is a joke though. Parents should pay attention to what their kids are doing instead of trying to outlaw material.

As the enormous cactus with a moustache said: LOL QUE?

The idea of implementing that (in any state, let alone across the nation), and the idea of parents being responsible for their actions RE: gaming purchases, is pretty much mutually exclusive.

Best ending to an article ever!

I tells ya when they brought in plain packaging for R dvds, movie companies should have just deployed their middle finger and said, well, no movies are to be distributed to SA ever again....I am sure the SA market is worth about $1.50 to them.

Oh they have an idea, usually many ideas, but they get quashed by the thing called "party line" or sheer and total desuchebaggery as soon as that idea is thought of so you end up with an individual turning into a cog to progress in a system where the longer you kiss arse the further you'll go.

So the answer to incorrect classification of titles is to incorrectly classify them under a different heading instead? Surely that would still still retain the same issues currently faced and if not make them worse as the material in question is more highly rated instead of the mid range for people to get up in arms about. No longer will the catch cry be the mother who bought CoD and watched little Timmy engage in violence for violence sakes, but it'll be combined with how he saw breasts and was able to walk into a strip club and pay for sexual innuendo (Duke / Vamp:Bloodlines as eg start points) and woe, R18+ is too low, R21? Nope, I still buy it for little Timmy lets cap it at R30+ so I can get it in my thick skull that it's not suitable for a 12-15 year old no matter how much he has a cry or makes a scene.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to see any of this content pre-purchase because it's hardcore and unsuitable for public consumption, so classification is only a fraction of the issue to begin with. The moment staff pay attention to the "indirect sale" is the moment where this will become less of an issue, since at the moment all anyone cares about is the point of sale and if the point of sale is above age then who cares where the sale is really going until they start getting mentally fragile and impact the community negatively. Amirite fellas?

But this all eventually comes back to a solid classification system that is in place, with full regulations for people to draw information on to make an informed choice to begin with. "this is rated 15+ is my child above the age of 15?" this is what needs to be reinforced not "this is like a speed limit, only applicable when I feel aggrieved by someone else for breaking it".

John Rau's my local member, he's actually a great guy, and I don't see the issue, really. MA15+ is essentially reserved for games that deserve the R rating anyway.

Yeah, but it's the hiding of the box art and such that is stupid.

These guys don't think and because of this, it potentially destroys the gaming industry.

It doesn't work that way. The same laws apply for films and they're just on a different shelf. It just makes it another section, so you'll see DVD shops have sections like TV Shows, DVD Movies, Blu Ray, R18+. They only put plain packaging if they put them with the rest of the stuff, which they don't.

As someone working in SA Retail, this will be a headache if it comes to fruition in the same manner as R rated movies.

So with R rated movies, the company I work for does not sell them in this state, as law requires that they have their own separate section, this requires more room, and as a store that does not solely sell BluRays or DVDs there's just not enough space to have a dedicated section. Thus any stock that slips through to SA stores gets sent back to the warehouse.

The alternate, as mentioned in the IGN article requires titles rated R to be reboxed in plain packaging. As stock is sent from NSW, it would fall into the store's own hands to be responsible for this, and create quite a bit of work needing to unseal/unlock every movie, and replace the cover slips with plain ones (print our own slips?). So where I work, this is not something that is done either, as the number of R-Rated movies that are on the database is quite low, and therefore doesn't make much of an impact.

On the gaming front, this would be a big issue however.

Space again is not large enough for a dedicated R rated section, especially with the large number of MA rated titles as a whole over all the platforms.

This leaves 2 scenarios:

1. Unsealing and repackaging of all titles into plain covered boxes. A hugely time consuming process at store level.

or

2. Not stocking R Rated gaming titles. A problem when a majority of the highest selling games are presently rated MA, trying to imagine a summer with no new Call of Duty title on the shelves, instead finding them half filled with the remaining G, PG and M titles is preposterous.

If 2 is the solution that numerous big retailers turn to, it would be ridiculous, and people will get their nice pretty covered MA games from online sellers anyway.

The solution offered won't result in more variety in adult games in SA, it will just restrict availability on titles that are no worse that what is currently purchased by 15 year olds.

There's probably a Wii section, a PS3 section and a 360 section in your store, right? Push the three different consoles together, put the non-R games in one of the sections, the R games in another. Easy. Tell Dick Smith to pay me for my incredible smartness.

This is pretty much the entire point of these laws. By making it such a difficult thing to do, the people behind the law effectively achieve their aim of banning R-rated material, without ever having to say that they did that.

Does South Australia still have its own entirely unnecessary classification board?

With this plan, plus the recent statements from the NSW and Victorian Attorneys-General, and the fact there won't be a decision on it at this week's SCAG meeting, it looks as though the time for an R rating for video games has passed. icon_sad.gif

We came so close, and then the idiots in Victoria threw out Rob Hulls. icon_sad.gif

i think most of what i wanted to say has been covered but wili it might be easy just to say " i want my R18+ game rating " the campaigning by palgn and associated party's have been pushing for a complete reform ie adjustments all round , rather then just simply losing MA15 and tacking on the R , like wise some titles could go in ether category but like many have suggested if the rating is indeed applied they could quite easily just say - no that breaches our code of conduct , thus making all that effort for nothing , it may only apply to SA but im not srue if id want it spreading or being there in the first place , it will be interesting to see what happens.

or your chain could start stocking the actual games out back, and on the shelves have those "Bring this to the counter to purchase <product>" card that quite a few stores use for various products, either because their small and valuable (memory cards), or because they require special treatment (such as cans of spray paints, in WA hardware stores.)
