|
|
|
|
This is it, ladies and gentlemen.
The one we've all been waiting for.
The PALGN 70s week is almost upon us, lets get into gear and reflect upon our personal favourite video games and home consoles from the 1970s.
With so little coverage of the 70s on other gaming websites, it is almost shameful. The era was arguably the most exciting and creative time in gaming, and most likely will be until forever.
Platforms like the Prinztronic Micro 5500, the Coleco Telstar Gemini and Atari 2600 were in their hey-day, and games like PONG were starting to make their first of many appearances in the home, pushing interactive game development to an area it had never been before.
Gaming technology like colour overlays, cartridges and light guns were gaining momentum on the production line, and hardware developers were taking massive gambles on video games becoming something huge.
Specs were impressive at the time, I remember getting my first Magnavox Odyssey and being amazed that they could cram a 1.79MHz microcontroller, 64 bytes of CPU RAM and 128 bytes of AV RAM into a box so small, and yet it was able to display 32000 pixels on screen!
Japanese up and comer Nintendo was doing it's best to satisfy the Otakus with it's own home consoles such as the TV-GAME 6 and BLOCK Kuzushi (CTG-BK6) and RACING 112 (CTG-CR112)
Milton Bradley also released the first handheld gaming platform with interchangable cartridges, the programmable MicroVision. The platform went on to catalogue thirteen fantastic titles, with one stand one being the incredible Star Trek: Phaser Strike, a Licensed classic.
So come on denizens of PALGN, lets get into the 70s spirit, and share our favourite platforms and games among ourselves on this messageboard ahead of the commencement of 70s week! _________________

The green one on the left. Of course its PONG.....
and of course SPACE INVADERS but I'm sure others will post pics of the cabinent.
Special mention should goto the LOGO progammable floor drawing turtle I was introduced to in primary school in the late 70s http://www.bfoit.org/Intro_to_Programming/IntroCmds.html (not actual ones used, but its proving difficult to track down)
And thats about it for the 70s. game and watch etc didn't enter till the 80s but if course there is ALOT to share from that era in another thread at another time....... _________________

1978!
Trying to think of other 70s games... I came up with Spacewar, but that's actually 1961. Everything else was way later than the 70s - I'm a child/gamer of the 80s at heart =P _________________

Did you know that you can play many 70's games on your Xbox? There's a plethora of them in Game Room. For just 240 MS Points, you can get such classics as Combat and Outlaw! _________________

Font needs to be green on black or amber on black! _________________

I suggest embedding this as background music to enhance the effect of technicolour. _________________

I like the suggestion Denny, but while it would be okay for one window, I find that I tend to open up to forty or fifty palgn threads at a time in separate tabs, so it would not sound as intended.
Not a bad idea Grim, could possibly incorperate it somewhere, but the site does need to look for the most part how it currently does or our partners will not approve it. _________________

A fair point A13x. I'd suggest this then, as while it may overlap, it never quite sounds bad. It's always fantastic and dakeing things to the limit and such. _________________

That is a much better suggestion! Thank you Denny
The background design was inspired by the trippy and fantastic box art for the Odyssey² and it's games, which seemed to all share the epic win demonstrated by the console itself.
The European version, the Philips Videopac G7000 (It doesn't roll off the tongue quite as nicely) unfortunately did not share the same fantastic box design, and released games appeared as seen below.

A good point, though if we're going to be pedantic, you shouldn't be on the internet Tapir. You don't even have hands. _________________

How about chucking some game sprites on the background too?
There's Combat, Adventure, Breakout and Space War from the Atari 2600's 70s days. Actually, maybe rip off some of the awesome painted images from the box covers that look nothing like the game =) _________________

Coleco vision was boss for its time.....the donkey kong and donkey kong jr ports were awesome.
I think the price and awful joysticks killed it, because it took a massive dump on atari in terms of graphics at the time..
this is what coleco looked like for DK jr
compared to the atari

Pointing out that 1980's music wouldn't be the best fit for 70's week is pedantic now? _________________

I know everyone says you are a wanker, i haven't chimed in on that yet, will make sure i do next time...
Coleco was mentioned, was stating that they actually made fairly decent machines. I am sure your rigid awesomeness can accept these things sometimes _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

Great work on being able to use the internet Stromo.
If you wanna play semantics its a good idea to actually read what people say.
