I am really keen to move to an Android phone when my iphone contract is up at the end of the year, if only so I can get rid of iTunes forever, but I also very much value gapless playback. Does anyone know if there is a solution that allows gapless playback of audio on Android - be it a specific music player app, or some other workaround.
Cheers! _________________

Oh, sweet, I never knew Rockbox moved over to Android. I was seriously considering putting it on my iAudio X5 at one stage. I might give that a spin. Otherwise, PowerAMP is the way to go. _________________

Let us know how you go with Rockbox if/when you check it out. _________________

Oh wow, the presentation is quite ghetto compared to the standards you'd expect from a media player these days. But having said that, they understand widgets. It has three sizes you can pick from in the widget menu, and from that point it allows you to pick what content you want on the widget. Very nice.
Gapless works as advertised. The internal database stuff is a crock though, you need to run a search for all music and then it wants you to reboot the phone before it'll use it. Wrong. Killed the process and the service, loaded it back up. Crash. I'm not going to let a simple music program defeat me like that, so I loaded it up again. Worked this time, but it took its sweet time loading its database up. And then you've got to navigate an interface that should have been left behind in MS-DOS land (or, more fairly, the low-resolution media player screens that Rockbox was originally designed for).
So yeah, can't fault its music playing abilities, or its widgets, but the main interface and library setup makes me want to fuck a couch or two.
EDIT: And I can't find an option for lock screen widgets. Shame, really. _________________

Still no official release though. One to watch in the future? _________________

My instincts are saying "no" simply from a usability perspective. The legacy behind the project indicates they won't be ditching the library or interface any time soon. Pretty much guarantees its death in the marketplace if it ever makes it that far. The project's focus is quite simply on being a replacement firmware for devices that don't resemble smart phones. Trying to compete with modern media players for smart phones will need a shift in the way the project is thought about and developed. _________________

Wait, is that the same Rockbox that was developed by the iRiver/Cowon community back in the day? Cripes! _________________
