Yeah I've now had two invites to two accounts and neither work. I'll shout when either of them gets through.

EDIT (repost): They're accepting right now from invited Google accounts, gogogo.
EDIT 2: Looks closed again, apparently there was a window of about an hour for already-invited accounts to sign up.

I'm kind of curious now as well. Google must have some sort of trump card. If anyone has spare invites, I wouldn't mind have a look around.

No invites are going out at the moment, apparently. Looks like it's just those that had been sent already that are being allowed in. It'll be live/open pretty shortly anyway, as I understand it. Matter of weeks, if that.

I'm totally over social sites like Facebook, done to death with them. Only a matter of time until my Facebook profile goes the way my old Myspace one did...

^PALGN is a social site. I understand it's very different to facebook, but a social site none the less (or at very least the forums are). The main difference I think between facebook and PALGN being a common interest (gaming) that we can all freely and comfortably talk and post about. The issue with facebook is I don't usually post gaming stuff on my wall because 90% of my friends aren't hardcore gamers, there's ways to make it so just that other 10% see the post but it's not implemented very well. What's interesting about Google+ though is it makes it easy to group people into categories allowing me to easy communicate what I want to who I want without annoying anyone with shit they don't care about.

tl;dr PALGN is a social network for people with specific interests, Facebook is a social network to keep you in touch with everyone you know, Google+ fits nicely in the middle (and, if popular enough could make facebook redundant).

Privacy no, they've set it up so you can view what data you are keeping with them and they give you the ability to take it all with you.

if only.

I meant as a social networking website, obviously it's a completely different website but I fail to see how Google+ 'fits nicely in the middle' when it really does nothing much differently to Facebook.

Example:

The really strong potential of G+ will be it's integration with all existing Google services - gmail, google docs + calendar, blogger, sketchup, youtube, etc.

Being able to seamlessly integrate peoples existing accounts, and share between them all, will be a pretty solid drawcard I reckon.

My hope is that google can deliver something practical beyond simply being a social network. I can not stand facebook, its nothinng but a time sink with virtually no practical benefit. I am happy to use twitter though because it provides me with a 24hr news feed on news I'm acctually interested in and it makes dealing with vodafone customer service tollerabe. If google can give me something useful (10 way video conference is a good start) then ill hapily dump facebook altogether and rid my life of wreched farmville updates/invites.

Yeah, I admitted that in my post, I wasn't saying facebook can't do it, it just doesn't do it very well

I'm kind of amazed how many people posting on an internet forum fail to see the point or hate facebook.

How is facebook so different to the PALGN forums?

PALGN has a personality, Facebook is too much about personal vanity. At PALGN you can come in and find/start a good conversation about a topic that you are genuinly interested in. At Facebook, you see the scripted, insubstantial, status updates of people you bearly know.

Facebook to me is just a chore, the only reason my accout exists is because my girlfriend created it, the only reason I keep it open is because it is easier to answer 'yes' when people ask 'do you have facebook?'. I accept your notion that Facebook and PALGN are essentially the same however I acctually enjoy what people have to say here which means I'm getting something out of it. Maybe if more of my close circle of friends used facebook I'd be on the other side of the fence but that's not the way the chips fell in my case.

I'm more gobsmacked about the 'Facebook is useless, it doesn't do anything worthwhile' and then following that up with 'I want more video conferencing from my social netowrk!'.

The genius of Facebook is being able to quickly and easily communicate and share media with many people, at any time, with neary no effort required. Unlike, say, video conferencing, which requires a lot of co-ordination to set up.

Edit: lulslowtyping -- this was meant to sit under Benzas post above.

Then your friends list on facebook sucks. I'm not a big fan of this having 230 facebook friends bullshit, but if you put people on your facebook friends that you actually enjoy spending time with then they'll generally say stuff that's interesting.

*snip*

They also don't post on my Facebook.

If someone does stuff on Facebook that you don't like you can always block/delete them. And the new filtering system on FB means I usually only get my close friends' updates anyway.

Reading it back, I can see how rediculous that comment sounds, but video conferencing is something I accually use at least once a week to catch up with my imediate family who are currently spread out accross the world.

Yep. Though it's only in the 60's not the 200's. I know them all personally and everything they just don't represent the closest and dearest people in my life. If the people who I wanted to interact with used facebook more often then, like I said before, I'd probably enjoy Facebook, but they don't so instead facebook is a chore, a mundane task of keeping up apearances. I'm not adverse to social media, clearly I'm here every day, I just access the core purpose of Facebook.

My year level at uni uses a Facebook group to assist in studying and helping out with each others' questions and general problems. Chaotic and disorganised it may be, but actually pretty useful around exam time.

Sure, there are actual forums set up by the uni for that kind of stuff, but this has the advantage of some privacy away from lecturers etc and manages to combine legitimate study with procrastination.
