Game is just so good, better then I remember. The subtle puzzles are so refreshing considering in modern games, everything is given to you. |
Yeah, its amazing really. I always kinda scoff at the whole "BEST GAME EVER" thing regarding OoT, and I still think bits and pieces of it were improved in later games, but goddamn has it held up well. Like, really friggen well. So well that if it were released for the first time now it would receive a lot of praise.
It was way ahead of its time. Way, way ahead. It and Majora's Mask basically validate Nintendo's choice to go with carts. |
Playing this again now, I greatly prefer it over Twilight Princess. While that game did extend a lot of elements and is a fantastic romp, I felt it was a bit 'soulless' in a way. I think they made the world way to big and empty.
Wind Waker is a hard one because it did feel different. I would like to revisit that game again actually, I hope Nintendo re-release it on the 3DS (if possible).
Also, Nintendo need to give the same treatment to MM ASAP for the 3DS.

Does anyone else struggle with the fishing? I spent about 20 min in there and only caught 2 little ones, and everything else I hooked came off the line. I don't remember that happening in the original. Or maybe I just suck at the fishing. _________________

Fishing is easy. The biggest fish always spawns as soon as you enter the area right in the middle of the pond. Any fish that you scare will retreat to the middle of the pond which you don't want as it makes it more difficult to catch the fish you want.
I've never had a fish break a line while holding A and holding the stick back in the opposite direction its trying to swim in.
If worst comes to worst, you can just use the sinking lure.
Finally finished the game, still (to me) the greatest game ever. The last boss and the environment got a serious graphical overhaul, it looks so damn pretty.
Master Quest is now unlocked and I'm going through the Great Deku Tree as I type this. One thing I didn't know was that this version of MQ is mirrored. Really puts you off, kinda like transitioning between the GCN version of Twilight Princess and the Wii version.
No Boss Rush mode yet, I guess I have to complete MQ first.

Are you sure no Rush mode? I believe it's unlocked as soon as you beat the game, you need to sleep on Link's bed to do it. _________________

Look at that, you're right! I wasn't even aware the bed could be interacted in this version.
We'll there you go. All the major bosses in Rush mode, no minibosses though.
Keep in mind that you are given the most basic and necessary items/equipment for the boss when doing Rush. So no Biggoron, Nayru's Love and whatnot.

I finished the main quest last night. I found Ganondorf easier this time around than when I used to play it on N64/Gamecube.
I also managed to find every gold skulltulla and every heart piece, something which I never did in any of my previous play throughs so I was pretty stoked about that. There isn't much left for me to do now so I may start Master Quest some time soon. _________________

Finally managed to pick up my copy today and have now started my first ever playthrough of occarina of time. So far I've just finished the deku tree (poor old fella) and I think it's great. You'd hardly belive the game was 13 years old. The 3D is very well done as well, though I do need to turn it right down every so often because of the intensity.
I also registered for. the soundtrack cd, so ill be rocking away to that in 8 weeks or so. I wouldn't be worried el supraman, it just looks like you've registered before nintendo could update the body text of the automated message since the AR Card shirt giveaway. _________________

Just finished the main quest, now I'm gonig through master quest.
One thing that annoyed me was that it doesn't save the game once it finishes.. I spent ages going back and getting all the skultulas and heart pieces I missed before facing ganondorf.. and now everything I got since my last save is gone. _________________

Finally finished. All heart pieces, all items (bottles, arrows, etc), and 81 gold skulltula tokens. I'll have to pull up a guide to get the remaining 19, as I dont recall where they all are. I'm pretty sure I got all the dungeon ones, so hopefully the remainder are in the overworld.
Lots of thoughts now that I'm wrapped up. I think the most obvious one is how well Ocarina of Time holds up today. Not just as a Zelda game, but as a game. It's really, really good. A legitimately well designed and beautifully paced game. It's saying something that a game this old can still hold up well all these years later.
How well its held up also puts into perspective how ambitious it was for its time. Not that it was ever doubted, but Ocarina of Time really is one of the greatest accomplishments of the art ever. When you think about when it was released, and on what platform, there really was no other game that had such an ambitious scope and scale of adventure.
More importantly, I think Ocarina of Time still represents some of the best use of 3D environment interactivity of any game ever made. Likely because of how big 3D was at the time, and Nintendo's push for the analogue stick, its as if every little thing you do in the game, whether it be exploration, combat or solving a puzzle, was built to exploit the Z axis. The game never feels linear or on rails, as if a 3D world is simply smoke and mirrors for otherwise basic, 2D gameplay.
I dont think the game is perfect though. There's still some rough corners, particularly in some of the later jumping puzzles, and many of the dungeons are very, very easy and quite simple. These feelings are likely due to how the core mechanics have evolved over the years. Later Zelda games are simply doing more complex puzzles and larger dungeons, and in that regard Ocarina of Time definitely feels like a first step.
I feel that nearly every aspect of Ocarina of Time has been improved in a later Zelda. Twilight Princess has larger, more complex dungeons and puzzles. Majora's Mask has a richer, more lively town and world concept (which was intentional). Wind Waker has stronger personality, is a little more progressive in its handling of both Zelda and Ganondorf, and has a greater sense of adventure (for me, anyway). But, even though I feel this way, Ocarina of Time is probably the most consistent of all Zeldas. Every Zelda game I feel that improved is also marred with noteworthy flaws, whereas Ocarina of Time is consistently above average in every regard. On top of this, the pacing of the game is probably it's one, big victory that I dont feel any other Zelda has matched. The start is strong and not drawn out, the progression of child Link is a fantastic prologue of sorts, which beautifully unravels into adult Link's quest. The game never lets ups, yet constantly teases and stimulates the player with new ideas, areas to explore, characters to meet, and revelations you never expected.
Ocarina of Time isn't my favourite game ever. It's not even in my personal top ten. It's not my favourite Zelda either. But I still would consider it one of the best games ever made, one of the most revolutionary and ambitious games ever, and practically unmatched in how gracefully it has aged. It deserves all the praise it gets.
As for this particular remake, I again much echo my surprise at how good it looks. The pre-release media really did zero favours. I do think a certain degree of conservatism took place (mostly in environment layouts), but by large the graphical improvement is amazing. The character models are lovely, but its the textures that really steal the show. They extra colour depth and resolution detail sets it worlds apart from the original. This, plus the extra details added throughout the game, such as small little effects, an improved lighting and shadow engine, and added environment details (Lost Woods anyone?) result in much richer, vibrant worlds that seem so much more alive. The 3D is really, really phenominal too, and stands second only to Pilotwings as my favourite use of 3D on the system.
The only other note I have is that I never realised how easy the game was. Maybe it is years of Zelda experience, or the fact the last time I played Ocarina of Time was Masters Quest from the Wind Waker bundle, but vanilla Ocarina of Time is an absolute cake walk. I didn't die once, didn't even come close, and never once used a fairy revival. None of the puzzles are particularly difficult, all of the boss fights are very easy, and many of the heart containers are much easier to find than other Zelda games. I had forgotten a lot of the game, so it wasn't memory, but a lot of things I found very easy this time around when I know I struggled with them as a child.
Still, tons and tons of fun and well worth the purchase. I'd adore a Majora's Mask remake from Grezzo, but also really excited to see what Nintendo do for a 3DS specific Zelda. I hope its a hybrid of Wind Waker's controls with the extra touch abilities from Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. _________________

Was there ever a way to switch target while Z/L-targeting? I could've sworn there was in the N64/Gamecube version by tapping a soulder buton or something

It's just pressing Z while already targeted quickly to switch to another lock. Same in the 3DS version, just quickly press and hold L again.

I wouldn't say it's hard but it certainly more challenge puzzle/combat-wise then TP/WW for sure. Again, it's the more subtle nature of the quest and dungeons which I am finding to be 'hrmm what do I do here'. WW was insanely easy.
I have forgotten the game almost completely from Adult link onwards and really enjoying the challenge of the dungeons (puzzles). Not hard but complex and vague enough for the need to explore and understand. But to the fire temple now and just utterly glued to the 3DS whenever I get time.
In terms of Zelda games, I class this slightly behind Link to the Past. Which IMO, is the greatest Zelda game of all time. But it's certainly number 2 for me. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Completely disagree with the difficulty. Combat Wind Waker probably takes the cake for ease, but there's no way I could agree that Twilight Princess had easier puzzles. Ocarina's are about as basic as they get. Still fun, of course, but super easy.
Once you get the biggerons sword Ocarina's combat is a cake walk. Most things die in one or two hits, and nearly all the bosses are easily beatable without taking any damage. You can roll through Ganons legs!
EDIT: Also, after all these years, this is the first time I've seen the dying soldier. That was a nice surprise. _________________

I have to agree on the difficulty, but probably for me its probably because this is literally around my 100th play through of the game.
But puzzles are incredibly basic, bosses are killed within a matter of seconds.
I think the game feels even faster since it seems they have sped up text scrolling (THANK GOD) and also climbing ladders (at least I think they have) and a few other things.
What makes Zelda so fun is the sense of adventure you get from it. Although how I play the game these days I barley even set foot in the fields of Hyrule. _________________ http://bencadphotography.com/

I heard that the street date had been broken and when i asked EB for my copy they were a bit sus but gave it to me anyway. Either way, if I didnt get it early, I can still say its a great game. I am loving the graphics and the adventure. The 3D is fantastic, but like some of you mentioned, I get a headache after using it for more than half an hour or so. So I am constantly turning it on and off. Other than that its a geat package.
I don't know if anyone else was really interested, but I got the collectors edition which came with "a real ocarina" ... made of plastic. It gets a pretty good sound, and comes with some poorly printed song charts so you can play along to your Zelda favourites. Though I don't think I can ever put my lips on it again after my pimple ridden cousin slobbered all over it. _________________

Check your emails everyone, if you registered your game with club nintendo you can get bonus 50 stars for doing a survey, it's a pretty long survey but worth doing for bonus points.
also, do it ASAP because I think the amount of people who can do it is limited. _________________ my video game collecting blog: http://keith.nallawalla.com/

Finished the Water Temple. I like the colour coding, it certainly makes it easier to figure out what comes next, but I still had to double back a few times. Still, glad to get that one out the way.
