Resolution? Multi-monitor? If you're going Eyefinity like Denny you'll need some grunt, but under a single 1080p monitor you wont need to go tooooo crazy.

I'm on a GTX 570 (factory OC'd) and it does wonders at 1080. Basically everything runs maxed out and well over 30fps, usually close to 60fps. Crysis 2's DX11 patch is the first thing to bring it to its knees, and even then I average 45fps. So, a GTX 580 would be better again

Dont worry too much about Metro. I suppose to should restate; Metro was the first thing to bring my PC to its knees. But thats Metro. It brings all systems down a peg. Those crazy Ukrainians (and Europeans for that matter) love pushing engines that arn't all tha well optimised, yet loaded to the brim with shaders and effects that will burn a hole in your case. Metro is pushing a lot of stuff, and will have so-so performance on basically every set up. The advanced DX11 DOF tends to be the biggest culprit, so you can turn that off if you're not happy with performance (its still playable though even with on).

Denny, I assume, will lean towards AMD/ATI cards. I tend to lean towards nVidia. Both are great though. nVidias, from memory, generally run a bit hotter and consume more power though.

Don't worry about Metro, seriously. My system can get crippled by that game solely because they pile on the polys and shaders like no tomorrow and don't think about optimising much of it. I mean yes, I CAN run it 60+ fps at single screen, but this is a dual-GPU card as well which is obscenely powerful and also expensive. It's not an easy game to churn frames out of and likely never will be.

Either AMD or NVIDIA are fine. I have a preference for AMD, but I always keep it a note that AMD are a little more high maintenence too, as in you require fiddling with profiles and driver updates from time to time. NVIDIA generally have a smoother track record with that stuff and for ease of use they're better, though they come at the cost of more power draw and comparitively more expensive products. Performance wise either team green or red do just fine, with red having better performance vs value, but as I said, somewhat high maintenance they can be.

Take Jarrods advice and go single GPU and don't worry too much about benchmarks online, as they're not rated on real world performance but synthetics. A single 6950/6970/570/580 will smash through almost any game without much effort.

That being said, if you are going multi-monitor gaming or 2560+ res, then SLI/Crossfire setups are much more justified as you get the performance you pay for.

Yeah. AMD is a bit more bang for your buck at higher resolutions, but at 1080p its not a big deal with both packing tons of punch. The GTX 570 is quite affordable too. Multi display you would be better going with AMD I think, and as Denny said same for crossfire, but that too is not really relevant if you only intend to go single display at 1080p or whatever. nVidia cards also come with the benefit of PhysX support, but only a few games use it (though it does look great).

You're safe either way really. Just let us know what kind of display resolution you intend to be running at and we can give you most affordable and powerful cards for your budget.

Single monitor only, I'll be hooking it up to my 1080p TV to start with then investing in a quality PC monitor in the near future, although as long as it can run games at 1080p I'll be very happy. I might go multi-monitor somewhere down the line but I'll be happy with the single screen for now.

I think I'll go with the GTX 580, it's within my budget and I've generally stuck with nVidia in the past, may as well keep the tradition going.

I'll try and get a full parts list together soon so you guys can let me know what terrible choices I have made

Yeah Chop's right. X58 won't go with a 1155 chip, and 1155 doesn't go well with triple channel.

I assume that's an i5 2500K? Same clock speed, so I assume so. You can crank those suckers up to 4.0Ghz/4.5Ghz with a few clicks. Stick a decent aftermarket cooler on there and you're smokin'.

Yeah K series is a cinch to overclock. I literally press one button on my motherboard when it's powered down, and next time it's on my i7 2600k is clocked at 4.5ghz.

Currently have an ORIGINAL X58 with 6gb of ram.

Needing a HUGE RAM upgrade, thinking 18gb+ of RAM...

Wanting to do it as cheaply as possible cos my PC is 3 years old, dont really want to sink money into it.

Upgrade is not for games, but for photo shopping etc.

Does anyone have any good compatible ram to recommend? (I'm struggling to find a up to date compatibility list etc)

System arrived this morning, I've spent all day backing shit up, marveling at (and then destroying some) of the awesome cable management to add in my other HDD, installing windows (etc.), and now I'm battling Steam to stop it demanding authentication of a new PC every 8 seconds...

Played a few mins of Borderlands... it was... beautiful.

Ran the benchmark for Far Cry 2 in Dx10, Ultra High... smooooth.

Awaiting my copy of Crysis 2 to arrive now, to put me in my place. Heh.

So, I need a desktop PC. I am not a 'hardcore' PC gamer, I've always preferred playing on a console...snigger all you want! I want it to be quick and preferrably around $1,500. I know piss all about computer hardware so attempting to build my own or follow any kind of tutorials would be nonsense!

$1500 can get you a very decent (decent as in good) PC gaming setup that you could brag you are a hardcore pc gamer, just saying...

Does the $1,500 include accessory? Karai's setup is $1,600 with delivery and insurance from Scorptec.

) . TamTam79 is right about how you can save a lot of moola. This is what I recommend. It's my final change for now and I hope someone else starts suggesting/praising/criticising etc!
