Ok gentlemen and ladies. This is it, your moment to shine.

After potential years of case modding, overclocking, cut fingers and thumbs, sweat and even tears, it will now finally pay off.

Wow, a lot of Antec cases. Here is my build that I built all on my own (with gardening ties as well icon_biggrin.gif ). I set a budget of $1500 but when trying to get it asap without waiting... everything costed more than it should (HD 5770 and i5 750 was in short supply so I had to pay more elsewhere).

Specs
Name The Tight-arse
Case Antec 902
CPU Intel i5 750
GPU Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB
HDD Hitachi 1GB
Monitor Benq G2420HD
Motherboard Asus P7P55D-E Pro
RAM 2x2GB ddr3 1600 G.Skill-Ripjaws
Power Supply EarthWatts 650
OS Win 7 Home Premium OEM
Drive SATA LiteOn
Speaker Logitech LS-11
Cost $1510.69 (30th May 2010)

Pictures, woohoo!

CPU Intel Core: i7 950 @ 3.0GHz
Mobo: Intel X58 Pro-E (not the best oh well)
RAM: 3x2Gb Kingston RAM
GPU: Gigabyte nVidia GTX460 1Gb
PSU: 650W
HDD: 1x WD 1tb 1x Samsung F3 1tb
Case: CoolerMaster 330 (it's ok, but it's more cramped internally than previous pcs that i've upgraded)
DVD: Liteon DVD Burner & Liteon Blu-Ray burner (yes dual drive setup, i've done minimal burning in recent months though as i need to lug the pc box to a more stable surface each time).
Keyboard/Mouse: Wireless Logitech
Speakers: Old speakers from my HP Pavilion pc icon_redface.gif
TV Tuner: Winfast DTV (utter crap, recycled from my old pc... doesn't work well with windows 7 though). Want to upgrade to a new DTV cap card, still researching best options though.

Monitor: Phillips 19inch CRT icon_redface.gif The BenQ 24" LCD my computer came with hurts my eyes too much.

Seeing the insides of people's machines actually reminds me my pc is due to be open and cleaned... better get to it this week. Mine gets fairly filthy after 3-4 weeks. It's funny it is situated in the same room that i've kept my other pc's in over the years, i've never seen so much dust in one before. 10+ years ago i was told i should do it at least once a year, a few years later i noticed that the room became more dusty more quickly (much like how the lounge room has become this way - and why i am a dust cleaning fanatic so i dont get dust in/on my ps3 or 360). So i would clean my pc every 6 months, then i gradually did it ever 3 months, then 2 months, now i just do it monthly.

Why not just turn the brightness down?

Screw CRT's, screw them in the ass.

I actually have tried that, i am a low brightness user (even on the CRT). It's funny due to the way i have the brightness settings for eye comfort, it's bright for web browsing and such (anything with white space etc). Try to watch tv or play a game, if there's a hint of a shadow in the game.... it's almost pitch black dark. Makes playing some games interesting (especially racing games where there's sunrise or sunset, or tracks with only partial lighting).

When i say low, "low" for me is 75% - 85%, through the monitor. 90% and above is too bright for me. Brightness + Contrast are at 50% on the nividia settings in control panel

Their son is 16 and wants to get into PC gaming. He is mad into Xbox & Wii but wants to play games like The Witcher 1 & 2, Starcraft II, Battlefield 3, Crysis, etc. etc.

It also has to last a while as they will not be upgrading again for 3-5 years.

CPU - Intel Core i7 930 @ 2.8ghz w/ Zalman CNPS9900 NT
Case - Fractal Design Define R2 Titanium Grey
Mobo - ASUS P6X58D-E
PSU - OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
GPU - ASUS ATI Radeon HD5850 DirectCu
RAM -Corsair CMX6GX3M3A1600C9 (3x2GB) DDR3
Optical Drive - ASUS DRW-24B1ST DVDRW
HDD's 1x320gb 1x500gb

The case is supposed to be great at absorbing sound with this black stuff, but im skeptical.

I'm yet to overclock but whenever I try and learn, procrastination kicks in.

Going to get an Nvidia card and maybe a new CPU later on in the year depending on what the specs are for Skyrim and BF3
