Your just being ignorant champ, EBGAMES make hardly any profit on hardware, its set in stone by the console producer.

They do once people buy them, then trade them in later for next to nothing so that they can re-sell them for only $50 less than RRP. And they do make profit on new consoles, it's probably more than what Nintendo makes off it selling it wholesale, but that's a guess. _________________

^^
Cant remember where i read it on the interwebs... i think its from micheal pachter actually...
Anyways, Nintendo makes about 8 dollars per machine... so, maybe eb makes 5 bux IF they dont price match, and lose GM when there is a console "bundle" i.e. free games. _________________ Soldiers Of Rage

If I'd known how much people we're going to react to it I would have I didn't really think I was saying anything controversial. _________________

Why even bother posting this 'information' as an article. Waste of time. _________________

At least it let's people know that they can preorder at EB. Not entirely sure why anyone would want to, but still, the option is available to them.

I don't think it's a waste of time, however the article title is very poorly named _________________

I reckon they over price their hardware, but because their hardware isn't always too technologically modern, they still get away with being the cheaper option.

The 3DS isn't selling too well because there's not really any good games on it to warrant someone spending that much on it. Things might change next week when Ocarina of Time 3D comes out, but not by much I reckon. |
Yes I know Nintendo consoles are not modern that is WHY they usually compete well on price while making a profit on their hardware. I do not see them giving up this strategy.
Im taking a look at the majority that bought a DS and Wii, these were the causal audiences that are not prepared to spend big on a high end video card, a PS3 or 360 when they were higher priced. The Wii at the time was cheap and found games to resonate with that audience, an audience for whom gaming is a lot less of a priority and thus not willing to spend as much money.
Nintendo's challenge is not only to convince that audience to upgrade to the Wii U but for the current gen core audience to adopt the Wii U where most games will end up on systems they already own. A high price will not help either of those causes.
On to the 3DS, I said "partly". A higher price point will hurt them and having a price very similar to the Vita could hurt them. I just think Nintendo will benefit from a $50 price cut by the time the Vita comes out but at the same time not come off as reacting.
Another issue is the 3DS is not just competing with the Vita but also the iPhone and possibly in the future Android. The iPhone has been found as a place for small casual bite size gaming that really resonates with people and that can chomp away at 3DS and Vita sales.
Sony I think is making a smart move with the Xperia Play and the PS Suite, that way they can keep ahead of Apple technology wise (going quad core by the end of the year if they choose), have a mobile OS that analysts expect to become #1 within the next few years (Android) and have a mobile gaming platform where people don't want to carry around multiple devices. _________________

Even if Nintendo comes out and says it's US$400, you know EB will still charge AU$598. I don't know why anyone would buy from them though. They are the biggest rip off merchants.

EB doesn't usually charge over RRP unless they bundle the console. They do however always charge RRP no matter what unless you price match. They're not a very competitive store unless you price match them but then why not just get the game/console at the place it's cheaper anyway.
